The intent of the Breakthrough Award is to support promising research that has high potential to lead to or make breakthroughs in breast cancer. The AACR and Eli Lilly and Company established this award in 1961 to honor Dr. G.H.A. Clowes, who was a founding member of the AACR and a research director of Eli Lilly. The Clowes Award recognizes an individual with outstanding recent accomplishments in basic cancer research. The recipient of the 54th Annual AACR G.H.A. Clowes Memorial Award will receive a $10,000 honorarium, give a 50-minute lecture during the AACR Annual Meeting 2014 in San Diego, CA, USA (April 5-9, 2014), and will be given support for the winner and a spouse to attend the Annual Meeting. The winner will also speak at the Eli Lilly and Company headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the invitation of the company later in 2014.

The American Association for Cancer Research established this award in 2007 in honor of Margaret Foti, Ph.D., M.D. (h.c.), for her exemplary leadership of the AACR as its chief executive officer; for her sustained, outstanding work in fostering research, scholarly communications, education and training, science policy and public education; and for her extraordinary dedication and contributions to the conquest of cancer. This award recognizes a true champion of cancer research, an individual who embodies the sustained commitment of Margaret Foti to the prevention and cure of cancer. The award is given to an individual whose leadership and extraordinary achievements in cancer research or in support of cancer research have made a major impact on the field. Such achievements include contributions to the acceleration of progress in cancer research, raising national or international awareness of cancer research, or other demonstrations of a sustained commitment to the conquest of cancer.

Through the generous contribution of an anonymous donor, the AACR established this award in 1979 to give recognition to a young investigator on the basis of meritorious achievement in cancer research. In accordance with the wishes of the donor, the recipient must be no more than 40 years of age by the time the award is received. The recipient of the 34th Annual AACR Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cancer Research will receive an honorarium of $5,000, presented a 50-minute lecture, and be given full support for the winner and a guest to attend the AACR Annual Meeting 2014, in San Diego, CA, USA (April 5-9, 2014.)

The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research funds groundbreaking research that integrates discoveries in biology with innovative technology to deliver breakthroughs to patients. To advance this mission, the foundation is inviting proposals for its Emerging Leaders Awards program, which provides support to early-career investigators engaged in high-impact, high-risk cancer research. Through the annual program, the foundation will award three-year grants of $750,000. The award is intended to support projects for which other sources of funding are not readily available from traditional funding mechanisms or for a separate innovative endeavor that will enhance the PI's current research portfolio. Eligible applicants must hold an MD, PhD, MD/PhD, or the equivalent at a U.S. nonprofit academic institution and be within three to eight years of their initial independent appointment. In addition, applicants must have a demonstrated ability to obtain independent funding for their lab (e.g., one or two grants such as NIH/R01, NSF/CAREER, or equivalent multi-year awards).

The Rivkin Center is announcing funds for Pilot Study Awards to be allocated based on scientific merit. Pilot Study Awards support investigator-initiated projects in all areas of ovarian cancer research. In addition, projects designed to analyze data from already funded clinical trials will be considered. The two-year awards will provide a total of $75,000 in funding, with the possibility of an additional $25,000 awarded in year two, upon evaluation of year one progress, contingent on availability of funds.

The Career Development Award supports early-career, independent investigators to conduct impactful research under the mentorship of an experienced lung cancer researcher as an opportunity to obtain the funding, mentoring, and experience necessary for productive, independent careers at the forefront of lung cancer research. This award is intended to support impactful research projects with an emphasis on discovery. Submissions from and partnerships with investigators at military treatment facilities, military labs, and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers and research laboratories are strongly encouraged. Key elements of this award are as follows: * Principal Investigator (PI): PIs must be research- or physician-scientists at an early stage of their independent research careers. PIs must be within 5 years of their first faculty appointment (or equivalent), and exhibit a strong desire to pursue a career in lung cancer research. * Mentorship: The mentor must be an experienced lung cancer researcher as demonstrated by a strong record of funding and publications in lung cancer research. In addition, the mentor must demonstrate a commitment to developing the PI's career in lung cancer research. * Career Development: A Career Development Plan is required and should be prepared with appropriate guidance from the mentor. A clearly articulated strategy for acquiring the necessary skills, competence, and expertise to have a career at the forefront of lung cancer research should be included. The plan should outline how the PI will gain experience and training in lung cancer research. Because career development is the focus of this award, the PI's institution must demonstrate a commitment to the PI through a minimum of 40% protected time for the proposed research, though more protected time is highly desirable. * Impact: Research that has high potential impact may lead to major advancements and significantly accelerate progress toward eradicating death

The Innovator Award will provide these individuals with the funding and freedom to pursue their most novel, visionary, high-risk ideas that could accelerate progress to ending breast cancer. Because the intent of the Innovator Award mechanism is to recognize these remarkably creative and innovative, visionary individuals rather than projects, the central feature of the award is the innovative contribution that the Principal Investigator (PI) can make toward ending breast cancer.

The FY19 PRCRP Career Development Award supports independent, early-career investigators to conduct impactful research with the guidance of an experienced cancer researcher (i.e., Career Guide). The Career Development Award presents an opportunity for early-career investigators to obtain the funding, guidance, and experience necessary for productive, independent careers at the forefront of cancer research. This award supports impactful research projects with an emphasis on discovery. Under this award mechanism, the early-career investigator is considered the Principal Investigator (PI), and the application should focus on the PI's research and career development. It should be clear that the proposed research is intellectually designed by the PI and not a product of the Career Guide. Preliminary data are not required. However, logical reasoning and a sound scientific rationale for the proposed research must be demonstrated.

The FY19 PRCRP Horizon Award supports junior-level scientists in conducting impactful research with the mentorship of an experienced cancer researcher (i.e., Mentor). The intent of the Horizon Award is to recruit junior-level scientists to perform research in one of the FY19 PRCRP Topic Areas. The Horizon Award challenges junior scientists to develop and implement research in the cancer field. This opportunity allows for junior investigators to develop a research project, investigate a problem or question in the field of cancer, and further their intellectual development as a cancer researcher of the future. Under this award mechanism, the junior investigator is considered the Principal Investigator (PI), and the application should focus on the PI's research and career development. It should be clear that the proposed research is intellectually designed by the PI with assistance from the Mentor. Preliminary data are not required. However, logical reasoning and a sound scientific rationale for the proposed research must be demonstrated. Clinical trials will not be supported by this mechanism.

The Oncology Nursing Society Foundation is seeking Letters of Intent from beginning researchers for its mentored Research Career Development Award. Through the annual program, grants of up to $20,000 will be awarded to support short-term oncology research training and mentorship, with each fellow receiving up to $18,000 to cover related expenses; the mentor (or the mentor's institution) will receive a $2,000 award in the form of an unrestricted honorarium to cover his/her consultative or research-related expenses and/or other institutional costs. To be eligible, applicants must be a registered nurse with an interest in oncology and have a completed PhD degree in nursing or a related discipline. These rare individuals will be able to articulate a vision for ending breast cancer that challenges current dogma and demonstrates an ability to look beyond tradition and convention. The PI is also expected to be established in his/her field and have demonstrated success at forming and leading effective partnerships and collaborations. To further the development of innovative individuals and spark the generation of novel ideas, applications are required to incorporate the mentoring of promising junior investigators. Experience in breast cancer research is not required; however, the application must focus on breast cancer, and the PI must maintain a 50% dedication of his/her full-time professional effort during the award period to breast cancer research.

The Breakthrough Fellowship Award supports recent doctoral or medical graduates in pursuit of innovative, high-impact breast cancer research during their postdoctoral fellowship and allows them to obtain the necessary experience for an independent career at the forefront of breast cancer research. Those individuals should be exceptionally talented researchers who have demonstrated that they are the "best and brightest" of their peers. Applicants for this award must exhibit a strong desire to pursue a career in breast cancer research, with clear evidence for a researcher development plan that will lead to a successful independent career in breast cancer. Applicants must also demonstrate that the proposed research has high potential to lead to or make breakthroughs in breast cancer.
