This Notice is to inform the community that NIH has revised its approach to resuming operations after the government shutdown.

The following programs have due dates that fall between October 1 - 25, 2013, and these dates are being revised due to the Federal  government shutdown. These revised dates apply whether the proposal is being submitted via the NSF FastLane System or  Grants.gov. Due to compressed proposal deadlines resulting from the shutdown, proposers are advised that they may experience a  delay when contacting IT Help Central with technical support questions. Chronic Brain Injury is accepting seed grant proposals from cross-college teams of faculty studying topics related to traumatic brain injury, concussion and dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. Five awards of $25,000 are available, and all Ohio State faculty are eligible.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement is to encourage collaborations between the life and physical sciences that: 1) apply a multidisciplinary bioengineering approach to the solution of a biomedical problem; and 2) integrate, optimize, validate, translate or otherwise accelerate the adoption of promising tools, methods and techniques for a specific research or clinical problem in basic, translational, or clinical science and practice. An application may propose design-directed, developmental, discovery-driven, or hypothesis-driven research and is appropriate for small teams applying an integrative approach to increase our understanding of and solve problems in biological, clinical or translational science.

The I-Corps™ at NIH program is focused on educating researchers and technologists on how to translate technologies from the lab into the marketplace. Under this FOA, participating NIH and CDC Institutes and Centers will provide administrative supplement awards to two cohorts of currently-funded SBIR and STTR Phase I grantees to support entrepreneurial training under the I-Corps™ at NIH Program. The program is designed to provide three-member project teams with access to instruction and mentoring in order to accelerate the translation of technologies currently being developed with NIH and CDC SBIR and STTR funding. It is anticipated that outcomes for the I-Corps™ teams participating in this program will include significantly refined commercialization plans and well-informed pivots in their overall commercialization strategies. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages transdisciplinary research that will leverage cognitive neuroscience to improve traditional measurement of cognitive impairment following cancer treatment, often referred to as chemobrain. A better understanding of the acute- and late-term cognitive changes following exposure to adjuvant chemotherapy and molecularly-targeted treatments, including hormonal therapy, for non-central nervous system tumors can inform clinical assessment protocols with downstream implications for survivorship care plans.

The purpose of this program is to provide continued support to Transition Scholars who have successfully matriculated through the NIH Stimulating Access to Research in Residency (StARR) R38 program as resident investigators, and who demonstrate potential and continued interest in pursuing careers as clinician-investigators. Awards will provide 12-24 months of mentored research and career development support to those individuals who completed R38 research training, have secured a clinical fellowship or early-career faculty appointment (as instructor or assistant professor for less than 40 months at the time of submission or resubmission), and propose a strong research and career development plan towards continued, successful research careers.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits research projects that seek to model the underlying mechanisms, processes, and trajectories of social relationships and how these factors affect outcomes in health, illness, recovery, and overall wellbeing. Both animal and human subjects research projects are welcome. Researchers proposing basic science experimental studies involving human participants should consider this FOAs companion for basic experimental studies with humans.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to promote research on interventions, based in healthcare settings, designed to reduce overscreening for breast, cervical, or colorectal cancers among average-risk older adults. While ongoing efforts to promote screening have been successful, there is growing concern that these tests may be overused, thereby subjecting adults to unnecessary risks. Overscreening older adults may be driven by factors at the individual, healthcare team, healthcare system and community organization levels. Therefore, research is needed both to understand the factors that drive overuse and to develop and test interventions that will reduce overuse in healthcare delivery systems. Research supported by this FOA should propose to intervene at two or more levels, and should measure outcomes at two or more levels, while accounting for interactions that occur between levels. Research supported by this FOA should enhance knowledge and consequences of overscreening to improve the health, independence, and quality of life of older adults.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to encourage research grant applications to: (1) assess and describe the current state of oral anticancer medication utilization, delivery, and adherence; (2) identify structural, systemic, and psychosocial barriers to adherence; and (3) develop models and strategies to improve safe and effective delivery of these agents so that clinical outcomes are optimized. Applications should focus research questions on at least one of the following: specific cancer type; class of drugs; and/or groups subject to disparities (e.g., elderly populations, members of low socioeconomic groups, racial/ethnic minorities). Research may be focused at the patient (pediatric, adolescent, or adult), patient-caregiver, provider, health care team, or health care delivery system level, and may include intervention studies, observational studies, or mixed-methods studies. Observational studies should emphasize modifiable risk factors for future intervention research.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages research on how the healthcare delivery system enhances or inhibits the effectiveness of a provider's recommendation of the adolescent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Characteristics of the provider, parent/patient, and clinical setting, can all affect whether a provider makes a recommendation, and whether that recommendation results in uptake of the HPV vaccine. This research requires expertise in cancer prevention, adult and childhood behavior, immunization promotion, and healthcare delivery.

The McGovern Institute for Brain Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was established in 2000 by Patrick J. McGovern and Lore Harp McGovern, with the goal of improving human welfare, communication, and understanding through their support for neuroscience research. The institute has announced a call for nominations for its twelfth annual Edward M. Scolnick Prize in Neuroscience. Now in its fifteenth year, the Scolnick Prize is designed to recognize outstanding advances in the field of neuroscience. The prize, which is endowed through a gift from Merck to the McGovern Institute, consists of a $150,000 award, plus an inscribed gift. In addition, the recipient will present a public lecture at the McGovern Institute in spring 2018. A gala dinner for the recipient and invited guests follows the prize lecture. Candidates for the award must be nominated by individuals affiliated with universities, hospitals, medicals schools, or research institutes, with a background in neuroscience. Self-nomination is not permitted.

Elsa Uhinck Pardee was born on a farm south of Cleveland, Ohio, on November 7, 1884, and received her elementary education in a one-room school. She married James T. Pardee in 1914. A college classmate of Herbert H. Dow, Mr. Pardee was a founder and board member of the Dow Chemical Company. Before her death from breast cancer in 1944 at the age of 59, Elsa directed that $1 million in Dow stock be devoted to the "control and cure of cancer." The Elsa U. Pardee Foundation was formed in memory of Elsa by the family she left behind.

The primary purpose of the NIH Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Awards (K08) program is to prepare qualified individuals for careers that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. This program represents the continuation of a long-standing NIH program that provides support and "protected time" to individuals with a clinical doctoral degree for an intensive, supervised research career development experience in the fields of biomedical and behavioral research, including translational research.
