The purpose of this FOA is to fund research centers that will establish longitudinal cohorts in rare HLBS diseases to investigate unaddressed research questions using epidemiologic study designs and methods that are appropriate for conditions affecting fewer than 200,000 persons in the US. These observational cohort studies should be designed to provide an evidence base for future interventional studies, including clinical trials; for developing better diagnostics than those that are currently available; for answering early translational questions; or for broader implementation of guidelines for managing these diseases. This program will provide opportunities to advance rare disease research using genetics and deep phenotyping to characterize the disease and to identify disease sub-types; to use data science methods that integrate clinical and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) with laboratory, imaging, environmental and -omics data to understand the natural history of disease; to generate data that differentiate patients with the same morphological phenotype but different genetic mutations and severity of outcomes; to elucidate genotype-phenotype interactions and multisystem phenotyping to develop reliable and valid predictive tools to determine who will respond to which treatments and when to intervene; and to encourage innovative methods such as telemedicine to include participants with rare diseases located in remote locations.

The FY19 TBDRP Career Development Award supports independent, early-career investigators in their efforts to conduct impactful research with the mentorship of an experienced tick-borne diseases researcher (i.e., the Mentor), thus providing an opportunity to obtain the funding, guidance, and experience necessary for productive, independent careers at the forefront of tick-borne diseases research. This award supports impactful research projects with an emphasis on discovery that may be translational in nature, but are not clinical trials. Under this award mechanism, the early-career investigator is considered the Principal Investigator (PI), and the application should focus on the PI's research and career development. It should be clear that the proposed research is intellectually designed by the PI and not a product of the Mentor. Preliminary data are not required. However, logical reasoning and a sound scientific rationale for the proposed research must be demonstrated.

The Chesapeake Bay Trust, in partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Maryland Department of the Environment, is accepting proposals for its Watershed Assistance - Two-Year Milestone Support grant program, the purpose of which is to promote local engagement inn the state's Watershed Implementation Plan. Through grants of up to $75,000, the program supports design assistance, watershed planning, and programmatic development associated with protection and restoration programs and projects that lead to improved water quality in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, the Maryland portion of the Youghiogheny watershed, and the Maryland Coastal Bays. Projects can include but are not limited to using designs, plans, or project proposals to craft future proposals to the Maryland Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund; developing deliverables that assist implementation of Watershed Implementation Plan Phase II strategies; or crafting proposals for implementation funding through programs at the Chesapeake Bay Trust or other sources of support. Local government agencies and nonprofit organizations working on water-quality projects are encouraged to apply.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is accepting applications for its 2018 Catalyst Grant program. The program, which aims to encourage and support junior faculty in the pursuit of pancreatic cancer research and establish a career path in the field, provides grants of up to $500,000 over three years to junior investigators who have yet to secure their first significant research funding. Research projects may be basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological in nature but must have direct applicability and relevance to pancreatic cancer. Grant recipients not only receive financial support for their funded research but also are invited to join the network's Community for Progress, a mentorship program that works to advance the goal of increasing survival rates and improving outcomes for pancreatic cancer patients. To be eligible, applicants must have a doctoral degree (PD, MD, DO, DC, ND, DDS, DVM, ScD, DNS, PharmD, or equivalent) in the biomedical sciences (or in a field applicable to health science research) and not currently be a candidate for a further doctoral degree. In addition, at the start of the grant term on July 1, 2018, applicants must hold a faculty position with the title of assistant professor, instructor, research assistant professor, or the equivalent.

 Current product-specific bioequivalence (BE) guidance published by the Office of Generic Drugs for dry powder inhalers (DPIs) include in vitro testing recommendations for single actuation content and aerodynamic particle size distribution, as well as recommendations for a pharmacokinetic study and a pharmacodynamic or clinical endpoint study.  Given the extensive nature of current DPI BE guidance, it is desirable that current in vitro testing for DPIs be more reflective of in vivo performance.  Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element modeling (DEM) have been used to predict dry powder aerosol behavior, including the effects of agglomeration and deagglomeration.  The purpose of the study will be to develop a CFD-DEM model which can be used to evaluate the impact of various physicochemical properties and device performance properties on regional deposition, to identify potentially biorelevant ranges for these properties that may be useful for future BE recommendations.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for a Data Coordinating Center (DCC) that will support the Diabetic Foot Consortium (DFC) for clinical research on diabetic foot ulcers. The first studies will validate biomarkers that predict healing or response to therapy and assess infection or recurrence risk.  Future research may involve clinical trials and studies on the pathophysiology of diabetic foot ulcers.  The applicant must have experience serving as the DCC for studies on complex, clinical conditions because of the multi-faceted nature of diabetic foot ulcers and their treatments.  The DCC will provide overall project coordination, administration, quality control, data management, and biostatistical support.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement is to support research activities that will contribute to the overall understanding of coccidioidomycosis, commonly known as Valley Fever, and other select endemic fungal diseases including histoplasmosis and blastomycosis. This research opportunity encourages studies that address diverse scientific areas such as: 1) pathogenesis; 2) host response; 3) disease transmission; 4) natural history and environmental factors contributing to disease; 5) vaccines; 6) diagnostics; and 7) therapeutics; with the ultimate goal of advancing the field towards solutions for the improved detection, prevention and treatment of select endemic mycoses.

The proposed studies are expected to be empirical in nature and product- driven. Applicants with limited ALS experience are strongly encouraged to collaborate with those having substantial expertise in ALS research and/or ALS model systems. The purpose of the BRAG program is to support the generation of new information that will assist Federal regulatory agencies in making science-based decisions about the effects of introducing into the environment genetically engineered organisms (GE), including plants, microorganisms - such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses - arthropods, fish, birds, mammals and other animals excluding humans. Investigations of effects on both managed and natural environments are relevant. The BRAG program accomplishes its purpose by providing federal regulatory agencies with scientific information relevant to regulatory issues

The American Association for Cancer Research-Johnson & Johnson Lung Cancer Innovation Science Grants program is a joint effort to address the need for promoting and supporting collaborative cancer research in areas that include digital therapeutics and smoking cessation, as well as biomarkers/behavioral phenotyping that bolster  understanding of how lung cancer can be successfully intercepted.  To that end, a grant of $1 million over three years will be awarded to a multi-institutional team in support of a new idea and/or innovative approach that has direct application and relevance to lung cancer prevention and interception. The proposed research should be translational in nature and include a clinical component with an endpoint relevant to improving the detection or treatment of lung cancer.

This cooperative research group supports projects defining the association between variations in the human leukocyte antigen (HLA), also known as the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC), and natural killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) genetic regions and immune-mediated diseases, including outcomes following cell, tissue, and organ transplantation.

The OCRP Investigator-Initiated Research Award is intended to support high-impact research that has the potential to make an important contribution to ovarian cancer or patient/survivor care. Research projects may focus on any phase of research, from basic laboratory research through translational research, excluding clinical trials. The application must demonstrate logical reasoning and a sound scientific rationale established through a critical review and analysis of the literature for the application to be competitive. Applications must include preliminary data that are relevant to ovarian cancer and support the proposed research project. The proposed research must be relevant to active duty Service members, Veterans, military beneficiaries, and/or the American public. The anticipated direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance for an FY18 OCRP Investigator-Initiated Research Award will not exceed $450,000. Refer to Section II.D.5, Funding Restrictions, for detailed funding information. All projects should adhere to a core set of standards for rigorous study design and reporting to maximize the reproducibility and translational potential of preclinical research. The standards are described in Landis, S.C., et al., A call for transparent reporting to optimize the predictive value of preclinical research, Nature 2012, 490:187-191.
