This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages exploratory and developmental grant applications to lay the foundation for innovative and collaborative basic research on the role of epigenetics in social, behavioral, environmental and biological relationships, throughout the life-span and across generations. Research plans that are responsive to this FOA will use existing bio-psycho-social and environmental data from human cohorts or animal studies that have biospecimens available for epigenetic profiling. The one year exploratory/developmental awards are expected to generate preliminary data for comprehensive basic research applications to study interactions between epigenetics and social/behavioral/biological/environmental factors in both normal function and pathophysiology throughout life and across generations. The results may ultimately inform research to develop clinical decision/diagnostic tools and prevention/treatment strategies.   

This FOA will provide support for assays (and associated data analysis) of repository-held samples for studies focused on an NIDDK-relevant disease. The review of applications to this FOA will consider both access to repository-held samples and funding for assays using the samples. These studies are expected to generate scientific discoveries on disease mechanisms, disease pathogenic processes, disease progression, or clinical responses. Projects that make good use of the associated data from the clinical trials and studies, the original intent of the clinical study and/or trial are highly encouraged. Exploratory studies and discovery research are encouraged especially when samples are not severely limited, the work is justified, and the goal is consistent with the original intent of the clinical research.

The PRMRP Technology/Therapeutic Development Award (TTDA) is a product-driven award intended to provide support for the translation of promising preclinical findings into products for clinical applications, including prevention, detection, diagnosis, patient care, and/or quality of life, in at least one of the Congressionally directed FY13 PRMRP Topic Areas. This FOA seeks to expand the use of these resources by investigators in the broader research community. The New Scholars Program supports projects to help early- to mid-career women scientists balance family responsibilities with demanding academic careers. New Scholars seeks to actively address the attrition rate of talented women scientists caused by work-life balance issues.

The MID-ARA Focus Areas are: * Development of new methods for rapid multi-pathogen/multi-phenotype detection of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), nosocomial pathogens, and/or rapid multi-pathogen/multi-phenotype characterization of antimicrobial resistance patterns. * Development of assays for host immune response biomarkers for diagnosis or prognosis of infection to inform clinical wound management decisions * Development and preclinical testing of novel chemotypes, biologics as potential therapeutics or prophylactics for wound infection, and/or biofilm formation, maintenance, or propagation. NOTES FOR ALL FOCUS AREAS: * Preference will be given to approaches that address infections with one or more MDROs, particularly, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and/or invasive fungal (mold) pathogens. * Preference will be given to studies leading toward topical treatments for prevention and management of wound infection. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites innovative research focused on understanding the role of exosome biogenesis and secretion in modulating and propagation of early pathogenesis in sporadic and late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Specifically, this FOA encourages collaborative approaches designed to identify and characterize the regulation of molecular machines that are responsible for exosome biogenesis and the secretion of exosomal cargo molecules in AD.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites research projects to improve understanding of the causes of high priority diseases in the United States and reducing/eliminating health disparities. Research is encouraged in the following high priority diseases within the scientific mission areas of the NIDDK: diabetes; obesity; nutrition-related disorders; hepatitis C; gallbladder disease; H. Pylori infection; sickle cell disease, specifically, studies in complications of sickle cell disease within the NIDDK mission areas; kidney diseases; urologic diseases; hematologic diseases, including studies in abnormal hemoglobin synthesis; metabolic diseases; gastrointestinal, hepatic, and renal complications from infection with HIV. The Idea Development Award promotes new ideas that are still in the early stages of development and have the potential to yield impactful data and new avenues of investigation. This award supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate progress toward eradicating deaths from lung cancer. Applications should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale. Submissions from and partnerships with investigators at military treatment facilities, military labs, and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers and research laboratories are strongly encouraged. New Investigators: The FY16 Idea Development Award mechanism encourages applications from independent investigators in the early stages of their careers (i.e., within 10 years of their first faculty appointment, or equivalent). The New Investigator category is designed to allow applicants early in their faculty appointments to compete for funding separately from established investigators. Applications from New Investigators and Established Investigators will be peer and programmatically reviewed separately. Principal Investigators (PIs) using the New Investigator category are strongly encouraged to strengthen their applications by collaborating with investigators experienced in lung cancer research and/or possessing other relevant expertise. It is the responsibility of the applicant to describe how the included collaboration will augment the PI's expertise to best address the research question. All applicants for the New Investigator category must meet specific eligibility criteria as described in Section I.D., Eligibility Information. Preliminary data to support the feasibility of the research hypotheses and research approaches are required; however, these data do not necessarily need to be derived from studies of lung cancer.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support studies to understand the role of allergen epitope-specific T-cell responses in the pathogenesis and treatment of allergic diseases by utilizing allergen epitope-specific reagents. The FOA will also support novel T-cell epitope identification, characterization and validation of important food allergens and aeroallergens that have not been previously studied.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement invites applications from U.S. or African research institutions to plan research training and capacity building programs focused on emerging viral epidemics in collaboration with institutions in Guinea, Liberia, and/or Sierra Leone.  The application should propose a collaborative planning process to develop training approaches that will create sustainable research capacity for the early identification, transmission prediction, testing of public health responses, and assessing and addressing long term health sequelae related to emerging viral diseases that have the potential for regional and global pandemics.  

The purpose of this FOA is to solicit applications that propose basic and/or translational research studies regarding the developing neurovascular unit, perinatal stroke injury/repair response, and/or stroke related etiologies and risk factors. Research addressing vascular, hemostatic, hematopoietic, and/or immune cell activities in the developing brain is of particular interest. This Administrative Supplement funding opportunity announcement is part of the Cancer Moonshot initiative to accelerate cancer research, and was developed in response to a recommendation from the Blue Ribbon Panel of experts charged with advising the National Cancer Advisory Board on the exceptional scientific opportunities that could be accelerated through this initiative. Based on the recommendation to intensify research and form highly dynamic and collaborative networks of investigators to advance our understanding of fusion oncoproteins as drivers of childhood cancers, this FOA supports supplemental funds to current NCI-funded research projects for new interdisciplinary collaborations to perform research within the scientific scope of the parent grant that will lead to better understanding of the mechanisms of action of fusion oncoproteins as drivers of childhood sarcomas, brain cancers, and high risk leukemias.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit organ-specific applications for Biomarker Developmental Laboratories (BDLs), one of the four scientific units of the recently funded Early Detection Research Network (EDRN). The EDRN is a national infrastructure funded to discover, develop, and validate biomarkers for risk assessment, detection, and molecular diagnosis and prognosis of early cancer.
