This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications that seek to support the identification of shared mechanisms and development of innovative interventions to address multimorbidity (or multiple chronic conditions (MCCs)) and its consequences. Intervention research supported by this initiative should be designed to study: (1) mechanisms or pathways that prevent MCCs, including the identification of early biomarkers, behavioral pathways, and individual and contextual risk factors and interactions that contribute to the development of common MCCs; (2) targeted therapies and management, including self-management, of MCCs to delay progression and prevent onset of new diseases; and (3) innovative health care partnership models for managing or treating MCCs. Studies may include shared mechanisms, and assessments of interactions between risk factors and interventions that address MCCs at different periods of the lifespan in diverse populations. Use of innovative technologies to assess and intervene on risk factors and pathways are encouraged. Studies may also include those that make use of existing data and/or data linkages to explore new research questions that may be helpful in understanding the impact of mechanisms in isolation or in combination. Of particular interest are interventions that target prevention and treatment of multiple chronic health conditions, including study designs that address therapeutic targets for preventing co-occurring multiple chronic conditions. Prospective applicants whose research interests relate to developing improved measures and methods for understanding multimorbidity, including but not limited to measures/tools to support basic mechanistic discovery of shared MCC pathways and identification and initial evaluation of MCC shared signatures, should see PAR-XX-XXX.

The Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense (JPEO-CBD) is organized into five Joint Project Management Offices (JPMO), each responsible for specific commodity areas. General information on the JPEO-CBD and subordinate JPMOs can be obtained from the JPEO-CBD website at http://www.jpeocbd.osd.mil/. The medical CBRN countermeasures developed by the Joint Project Manager Medical Countermeasure Systems (JPM MCS) office directly support the current, near-term, and far-term challenges by providing the capability to prevent, diagnose and treat the effects of chemical, radiological and biological warfare agents. Mission areas and technical points of contact for the product management offices within the JPM MCS are shown in Section VII of this BAA. Proposals are sought from all eligible sources as specified herein, including educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and private industry. This Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) provides general information, proposal preparation instructions, evaluation and selection criteria, and award administration.

NIST is soliciting applications from eligible institutions of higher education in the U.S. and its territories that offer two- or four- year degrees in academic science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, which include but are not limited to biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, electronics, materials science, mathematics, nanoscale science, neutron science, physical sciences, physics, and statistics, to establish and manage a program to support collaborative research relationships among NIST staff, undergraduate and graduate students, individuals with bachelor's or master's degrees, post-doctoral fellows, and academic affiliates, and the PREP researchers' academic institutions. These collaborative relationships will include research opportunities at the relevant NIST campuses in Boulder, Colorado (CO) (PREP Boulder), or Gaithersburg, Maryland (MD), and/or Charleston, South Carolina (SC) (PREP Gaithersburg). Eligible applicants may apply to establish and manage a PREP Boulder program or a PREP Gaithersburg program or may apply to establish and manage programs for both.

Timely and reliable laboratory data are an essential component of a well-functioning national health system. This FOA will support strengthening the quality, accessibility, and sustainability of the NHLS across a six-tiered network, i.e., at the national, zonal, regional, district, health center, and dispensary levels. Technical assistance will focus on improving the quality assurance of HIV rapid testing, TB microscopy and GeneXpert; Early Infant Diagnosis (EID) and Viral Load (VL) testing; establishment and maintenance of efficient sample referral system and transport networks; implementation of laboratory Quality Management Systems; implementation of Laboratory Information Management Systems; scale up of EID and VL monitoring programs; quantification and forecasting of laboratory commodities; HIV Drug Resistance Surveillance; and, effective use of laboratory data for program management.

The MPS DC is expected to be the central clearinghouse for TC data management, and will incorporate novel approaches and technologies for data management, data mining and meta-analyses, and data sharing across many organs and tissues, diseases, data types, and TC platforms. The MPS Data center is expected to provide different levels of public and tiered access to TC information for basic and clinical researchers, academic and practicing physicians, the pharmaceutical industry, NIH, FDA and other government agencies, patients, and the lay public. The MPS Data Center will work with IQ Consortium members to develop and make available a secure, customizable coordinated data management system for collection, storage, and analyses of diverse data types from multiple TC platforms being developed and used for drug screening, safety and efficacy testing.

The purpose of the program is to enhance interdisciplinary, biobehavioral research for scientists conducting self-management research by enabling development of a sustainable research infrastructure and centralized resources in support of research programs in various science areas.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement invites applications to establish Centers of Excellence for Self-Management Research: Building Research Teams for the Future (P20). The purpose of the program is to enhance interdisciplinary, biobehavioral research for scientists conducting self-management research by enabling development of a sustainable research infrastructure and centralized resources in support of research programs in various science areas. The purpose of the P20 Center is to: (1) develop new and a potential sustainable interdisciplinary, biobehavioral research capacity for scientists conducting nursing research by establishing centralized research resources and a research infrastructure; (2) build the Centers thematic science area through complementary, synergistic research activities; and (3) begin to grow feasibility research that will develop into new research teams of the future and independent investigator research applications.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recognizes the increasing demands placed on biomedical researchers to share data they generate through federally-funded research projects. As part of its Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Initiative, NIH wishes to help the broader scientific community update knowledge and skills in the important areas of the science, storage, management and sharing of biomedical big data. NIH wants to identify the array of timely, high quality courses and online learning materials already available on data science and data management topics for biomedical big data.

The purpose of this notice of funding opportunity is to identify and implement innovative strategies to better engage, detect, and manage glaucoma and other eye diseases among vulnerable populations, in community-based settings, for replication and scaling in the US. This NOFO will be accomplished with two components; Component A: Community-Based Interventions with Vulnerable Populations and Component B: Coordinating Center to provide logistics and support to the research study. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness among African Americans and the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. An estimated 2.2 to 2.7 million people in the United States have the disease. Due to its asymptomatic nature, half of people with glaucoma are unaware of their condition, increasing the severity of the disease. However, once detected, appropriate treatment and management can slow glaucoma progression and preserve the remaining vision, but cannot restore lost vision. Given the low general population prevalence of glaucoma, broad general population screening appears not to be cost-effective, and the marginal results from glaucoma screenings in high-risk population, it is reasonable to reach out to groups with higher prevalence (African Americans over age 40, Asians, older people [aged 65+ years] especially older Hispanics, those with a family history of glaucoma, and those with diabetes).

Specifically, this FOA targets the following area designated as a scientific priority by the Blue Ribbon Panel (BRP): the Implementation of Integrated and Evidenced-based Symptom Management Throughout the Cancer Trajectory. The purpose of this specific FOA is to promote research on the implementation and evaluation of integrated symptom monitoring and management systems for use in cancer care delivery through a Research Consortium. This research will provide new insights and valuable evidence that can be used to guide efforts on a nation-wide basis to improve symptom control for cancer patients during treatment and survivorship.

EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP), in coordination with the EPA Regional Offices, announces the availability of approximately $506,000 for FY13 to further, through research, development, monitoring, public education, training, demonstrations, or studies, the adoption of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches to reduce pesticide risk in production agriculture settings in the United States. IPM is a sustainable approach to managing pests by combining biological, cultural, physical, and chemical tools in a way that minimizes economic, health, and environmental risks.

The MID-ARA Focus Areas are: * Development of new methods for rapid multi-pathogen/multi-phenotype detection of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), nosocomial pathogens, and/or rapid multi-pathogen/multi-phenotype characterization of antimicrobial resistance patterns. * Development of assays for host immune response biomarkers for diagnosis or prognosis of infection to inform clinical wound management decisions * Development and preclinical testing of novel chemotypes, biologics as potential therapeutics or prophylactics for wound infection, and/or biofilm formation, maintenance, or propagation. Innovative treatment approaches are encouraged. NOTES FOR ALL FOCUS AREAS: * Preference will be given to approaches that address infections with one or more MDROs, particularly, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and/or invasive fungal (mold) pathogens. * Preference will be given to studies leading toward topical treatments for prevention and management of wound infection. Overview: The FY14 DMRDP MID-ARA seeks applied research applications focused on the reduction of combat-related or trauma-induced wound infection morbidity and mortality. 

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) offers support for innovative research in biomedical informatics and data science. The scope of NLM's interest in the research domain of informatics is broad and interdisciplinary, developing methods and approaches in biomedical computing, data science and related information fields for application domains of health and biomedicine, including health care delivery, basic biomedical research, clinical and translational research, precision medicine, public health, biosurveillance, health information management in disasters, and similar areas. NLM defines biomedical informatics as the science of optimal representation, organization, management, integration and presentation of information relevant to human health and biology, for purposes of learning, sharing and use.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) offers support for innovative research in biomedical informatics. The scope of NLM's interest in the research domain of informatics is interdisciplinary, encompassing informatics problem areas in the application domains of health care, public health, basic biomedical research, bioinformatics, biological modeling, translational research and health information management in disasters. NLM defines biomedical informatics as the science of optimal organization, management, presentation and utilization of information relevant to human health and biology. Informatics research produces concepts, tools and approaches that advance what is known in the field and have the capacity to improve human health.  

The award program is designed to advance the understanding of mechanisms underlying the development of renal complications in people with diabetes and improve the treatment and management of people with chronic kidney disease and diabetes. Proposals for basic, clinical, or translational science projects, including fundamental biological research, mechanistic and outcome-based clinical studies, behavioral research, database, and epidemiologic research, will be considered. Studies focused on improving the evidence base for optimal treatment and management of chronic kidney disease in a diabetes setting and increasing understanding of the development of renal complications in people with diabetes are encouraged.

Research proposals should address questions in one of two broad ecosystems: Arid/semi-arid ecosystems: The Division of Environmental Biology (DEB) anticipates support and management of one (1) new site with a focus on arid or semi-arid ecosystems. The location of the research site for proposals submitted to develop a new arid/semi-arid ecosystem LTER must be within the United States, including its territories and protectorates.  Ocean/coastal ocean ecosystems: The Division of Ocean Sciences (OCE) anticipates support and management of two (2) new sites that focus on ocean or coastal ocean ecosystems; defined as ecological systems from the shoreline outward on continental shelves and including the Laurentian Great Lakes, Congressionally defined as interior oceans. Preference will be given to proposals developing a new ocean/coastal ocean ecosystem LTER site located within the United States, including its territories and protectorates, but other locations are not precluded.

PCORI seeks to fund pragmatic clinical trials, large simple trials, or large-scale observational studies that compare two or more alternatives for addressing prevention, diagnosis, treatment, or management of a disease or symptom; improving healthcare system-level approaches to managing care; communicating or disseminating research results to patients, caregivers, or clinicians; or eliminating health or healthcare disparities. Proposed studies must address critical clinical choices faced by patients, their caregivers, clinicians, or delivery systems. They must involve broadly representative patient populations and be large enough to provide precise estimates of hypothesized effectiveness differences and to support evaluation of potential differences in treatment effectiveness in patient subgroups.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to invite applications for the Data Coordinating Center (DCC) of the Early Phase Pain Investigation Clinical Network (EPPIC-Net). EPPIC-Net will serve as the cornerstone of the NIHs Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Partnership. EPPIC-Net will provide a robust and readily accessible infrastructure for carrying out in depth phenotyping and biomarker studies in patients with specific pain conditions, and the rapid design and performance of high-quality Phase 2 clinical trials to test promising novel therapeutics for pain from partners in academia or industry. Studies will bring intense focus to patients with well-defined pain conditions and high unmet therapeutic needs. EPPIC-Net will consist of one Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC), one Data Coordinating Center (DCC) and approximately 10 specialized clinical centers (hubs). As the main data manager for pain research in the HEAL Initiative, the EPPIC-Net DCC will host and manage clinical, neuroimaging, biomarker, omics, and preclinical data from EPPIC-Net and other components of the HEAL Initiatives pain research program.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit applications to continue a Leadership Group (LG) for a Clinical Research Network on Antibacterial Resistance (AR), which was initiated to develop, implement, and manage a clinical research program to address key clinical research questions in AR. The LG is a cohesive program dependent on the highly integrated and complimentary activities of the four centers that comprise the network: Scientific Leadership Center (SLC), Clinical Operations Center (COC), Laboratory Center (LC) and Statistics and Data Management Center (SDMC).
