The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage institutions with expertise and innovative strategies for developing research and mentoring opportunities for undergraduate students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research to submit applications for 6 month planning grants for the NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) initiative. The BUILD initiative aims to increase the diversity of the NIH-funded workforce by supporting collaborative programs that include novel approaches for enhancing undergraduate education, training, and mentorship, as well as infrastructure support and faculty development to facilitate those approaches. BUILD planning grants are intended to help institutions develop the necessary partnerships and infrastructure needed to be competitive for the BUILD initiative.

The purpose of this FOA is to seek, identify and support bold and innovative approaches to broaden graduate and postdoctoral training, such that training programs reflect the range of career options that trainees (regardless of funding source) ultimately may pursue and that are required for a robust biomedical, behavioral, social and clinical research enterprise. Collaborations with non-academic partners are encouraged to ensure that experts from a broad spectrum of research and research-related careers contribute to coursework, rotations, internships or other forms of exposure. This program will establish a new paradigm for graduate and postdoctoral training; awardee institutions will work together to define needs and share best practices.

The FY13 PH/TBI BAPHA Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity is focused on specific research Topic Areas of PH and well-being of military personnel and their families as outlined in Section I.B. of the Program Announcement. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on a strong scientific rationale. Experimental interventions are strongly encouraged, but are not explicitly required. The FY13 PH/TBI BAPHA seeks to fund basic and applied research (including early phase clinical trials). Preliminary data are required for applied research applications.

The National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation (NNPDF) invites applications for postdoctoral research fellowships examining the biology of Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC) disease, a lethal neurodegenerative disease for which there are no effective therapies. M.D., Ph. D. and D.V.M. postdoctoral fellows are eligible to apply for funding to improve our understanding of the biology and pathogenesis of NPC disease.  Preference will be given to research projects developing new therapies for NPC and identifying biomarkers of disease activity for diagnosis and clinical trials. The fellowships provide support of $50,000 per annum for two years and may be renewable based on performance.  Applicants must be currently associated with a recognized laboratory

The New York Stem Cell Foundation is soliciting applications from early career investigators for awards in neuroscience. The main goal of this initiative is to foster truly innovative and excellent science with the probability for transforming the field of neuroscience research. The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department or may offer interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. (2) REU Supplements may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements or may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects.

The Next Generation Award recognizes SfN chapter members who have made outstanding contributions to public communication, outreach, and education about neuroscience.

The Janett Rosenberg Trubatch Career Development Award, supported by the Trubatch Family, recognizes originality and creativity in research and promotes success during academic transitions prior to tenure.

The Young Investigator Award, supported by AstraZeneca, recognizes the outstanding achievements and contributions by a young neuroscientist who has recently received his/her advanced professional degree.

The Ralph W. Gerard Prize in Neuroscience, supported by Lilly USA LLC, honors an outstanding scientist who has made significant contributions to neuroscience throughout his or her career.

The Mika Salpeter Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual with outstanding career achievements in neuroscience who has also significantly promoted the professional advancement of women in neuroscience.

The Swartz Prize, supported by the Swartz Foundation, honors an individual whose activities have produced a significant cumulative contribution to theoretical models or computational methods in neuroscience or who has made a particularly noteworthy in theoretical or computational neuroscience.

The Jacob P. Waletzky Award, supported by The Waletzky Family, honors a scientist who has conducted research or plans to conduct research in the area of substance abuse and the brain and nervous system.

We are interested in proposals that address memory or cognition under normal and pathological conditions. This includes proposals that address mechanisms of memory or cognition at the synaptic, cellular, or behavioral level in animals, including humans.We are particularly interested in proposals that incorporate fundamentally new approaches, as well as those that involve human experimentation. Collaborative and cross-disciplinary applications are encouraged.
