The Taking Flight Award seeks to promote the careers of young epilepsy investigators, enabling them to develop a research focus independent of their mentor(s). In 2018, CURE will issue one request for proposals for the Taking Flight Award. Please refer to the LOI guidelines for an overview of CURE's 2018 priority areas, application instructions and FAQs. Eligibility You must fall into one of the following categories to be eligible for the Taking Flight Award: A senior postdoctoral fellow who has a minimum of 3 years postdoctoral experience A clinical fellow who is a Neurology Resident in his/her Neurology training and considering Epilepsy Fellowships Newly appointed faculty within one year of having completed postdoctoral training

Applicants for the funds may be students or faculty. The project, program, or entrepreneurial idea must be created by, led by or benefit women. Grants are awarded in values of $2500 to $20,000. While we prefer the base grant to be $5,000, we are considering a limited number of $2500 which will be required to show high impact. These applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The grants must be submitted online via the link below and must include a 2-minute video. Applicants will be narrowed to a pool of 10-15 finalists by our M.I.A.M.I. WOMEN Grants Committee. This committee will review applications; contact applicants if additional information is required, and present the finalists to the M.I.A.M.I. WOMEN Steering Committee and Development Staff. Grant deadline for this year is Feb. 9, 2018. These finalists will perform in a fast-pitch style Hawk Tank event on April 11, 2018. Finalists will be offered fast-pitch training courtesy of the Farmers School of Business - school of Entrepreneurship, and will receive coaching and support. They will then pitch their idea in 5 minutes or less on April 11, 2018 at the event. Giving Circle members are the voters who will determine winners. Absentee voters will be given the option to vote online. Winners will be announced that night or the next day at the Symposium, to be determined.

The Medical Research Fellows Program enables students to be immersed in a high-impact, intensive research experience at a critical time in their professional education, before they make plans for residency or postdoctoral training. Unique aspects of the program include national and regional professional development activities, mentorship by physician-scientists, interaction with HHMI investigators, and integration into a community of like-minded peers. Each student selects and works with a mentor to develop a basic, translational, or applied biomedical research proposal. Both mentor selection and the research proposal are key components of the fellowship application; working with an HHMI scientist is encouraged but not required. Mentors can be at any academic or nonprofit research institution in the United States (excluding the National Institutes of Health and any other government agency) or at HHMI's Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, VA. 

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to provide infrastructure support to advance development of operational definitions and approaches for the study of the concepts of cognitive reserve and resilience to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and age-related cognitive decline. The infrastructure support will facilitate a collaborative research network through meetings, conferences, small-scale pilots, and dissemination activities to foster development and champion use of state-of-the-art definitions, uniform nomenclature, and validated approaches that will be key to the advancement of research on maintenance of brain and cognitive health and treatment and/or prevention of ADRD.

The goal of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to facilitate research to identify individual influences on the effectiveness of population-level strategies that target cancer-related behaviors. We seek to encourage collaborations among scientists with expertise in health policy research and implementation, as well as investigators in scientific disciplines that have not traditionally conducted cancer or policy research, such as: psychological science (e.g., social, developmental); affective and cognitive neuroscience; judgment and decision-making; consumer behavior and marketing; organizational behavior; sociology, cultural anthropology; behavioral economics; linguistics; and political science.

The Esther A. & Joseph Klingenstein Fund, in partnership with the Simons Foundation, has announced the opening of its 2018 competition for research fellowships in the neurosciences. Previously known as the Klingenstein Fellowship Awards in the Neurosciences, this year's awards are the second from this joint initiative. The awards are presented to highly promising early-career scientists. At a critical juncture in young investigators' careers when funding can be a challenge, the awards are intended to promote higher-risk, and potentially higher-reward, projects. Payable over three years, the $225,000 award may be used for salary support, research assistants, equipment, or any other purpose that promotes the scientific activities of the fellow. To be eligible, investigators must hold a PhD and/or MD degree and have completed all their research training, including postdoctoral training. In addition, the applicant must be an independent investigator within four years (between July 1, 2014, and July 1, 2018) of receiving his/her first tenure-track appointment at a university or medical institution.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites research grant applications from organizations/institutions that propose the development of novel radioligands for positron emission tomography (PET) or single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging in human brain, and that incorporate pilot or clinical feasibility evaluation in pre-clinical studies, model development, or clinical studies.

The McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience supports innovative research that brings science closer to the day when diseases of the brain can be accurately diagnosed, prevented, and treated. To that end, the McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience is inviting applications for the 2018 McKnight Scholar Awards.

The NINDS Exploratory Neuroscience Research Grant program supports exploratory and innovative research projects, which fall within the mission of the NINDS. Awards will provide support for the early and conceptual stages of projects. These studies often assess the feasibility of a novel avenue of investigation and involve considerable risk, but have the potential to bring about breakthroughs in the understanding of important areas of neuroscience, or to the development of novel techniques, agents, methodologies, or models, of high value to the neuroscience community.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this National Insitute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nations biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on research experiences, designed to foster the development of physicians as research scientists in areas relevant to the NINDS mission. The research experiences will prepare clinicians to successfully compete for individual NIH mentored career development awards, or where appropriate, independent research awards. This FOA will also support educational activities such that participants of the R25 are expected to attend and participate in an annual workshop specific to this FOA to present their work, discuss progress and plans towards transitioning to the next career stage and to network with other researchers and leaders in their fields. Such success will facilitate their transition from resident/fellow to physician-scientist, and will thus foster retention of a cadre of physician-scientists who will conduct research into the mechanisms of, etiology, and treatment of neurological diseases.

NeuroHIV is at an inflection point, with an urgent need to understand the mechanisms that cause and modulate the CNS impairment in the era of antiretroviral therapies.

The PH/TBIRP was established by Congress in FY07 in response to the devastating impact of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and psychological health (PH) issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), on our deployed Service members (SMs) in Iraq and Afghanistan. The PH/TBIRP mission is to establish, fund, and integrate both individual and multiagency research efforts that will lead to improved prevention, detection, and treatment of PH issues and TBI. The vision of the PH/TBIRP is to prevent, mitigate, and treat the effects of traumatic stress and TBI on function, wellness, and overall quality of life for SMs as well as their caregivers and families.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to elucidate the etiology and pathogenesis of the neurocognitive complications associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) with the ultimate goal of informing future strategies to mitigate the risk of these complications. Applications should propose expansions of ongoing human studies of well characterized T2D cohorts or cohorts comparing T2D with non-diabetic populations.  Such expansions might include the addition of comprehensive neurocognitive measures (e.g., cognitive testing, neuroimaging, and biomarkers), clinical measures (e.g., insulin resistance, HbA1c), and/or collection of data on other risk factors (e.g., diet, obesity, micro- and macro-vascular disease, inflammation). It must be clearly explained how the collection of additional data will contribute to elucidation of the basis of neurocognitive sequelae of T2D.

There is a global trend in the rise of HIV among older adults. In 2013, an estimated 42% of Americans living with HIV were at least 50 years old, 25% were at least 55 years old, and 6% were at least 65 years old. Since the advent of combination antiretroviral therapy to treat HIV, people infected with the virus have been living longer and experiencing fewer of the medical conditions directly attributable to HIV infection and AIDS. However, with longer life expectancy, individuals living with long-term HIV infection exhibit many clinical characteristics commonly observed in aging: multiple chronic diseases or conditions, the use of multiple medications, and changes in physical and cognitive abilities.

The program was established to encourage emerging neuroscientists to focus on disorders of learning and memory. Preference is given to applicants working on problems that, if solved at the basic level, would have immediate and significant impact on clinically relevant issues.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for human studies to elucidate the etiology and pathogenesis of the increased risk for neurocognitive impairment associated with type 2 diabetes.

The purpose of the BRAIN Initiative Fellows (F32) program is to enhance the research training of promising postdoctorates, early in their postdoctoral training period, who have the potential to become productive investigators in research areas that will advance the goals of the BRAIN Initiative. Applications are encouraged in any research area that is aligned with the BRAIN Initiative, including neuroethics. Applicants are expected to propose research training in an area that clearly complements their predoctoral research. Formal training in analytical tools appropriate for the proposed research is expected to be an integral component of the research training plan. In order to maximize the training potential of the F32 award, this program encourages applications from individuals who have not yet completed their terminal doctoral degree and who expect to do so within 12 months of the application due date. On the application due date, candidates may not have completed more than 12 months of postdoctoral training.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites research grant applications to decipher pathways and mechanisms responsible for HIV-1 induced central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction seen in virally suppressed HIV-1 positive patients, by understanding the causal role played by altered neuronal circuits, neuronal receptors and neuronal networks. Basic and translational research in domestic and international settings are of interest. Multidisciplinary research teams and collaborative alliances are encouraged but not required. This RFA [RFA-MH-18-610] uses the R01 grant mechanism while the companion RFA [RFA-MH-18-611] uses the R21 mechanism. High risk/high payoff projects that lack preliminary data may be most appropriate for the R21 [RFA-MH-18-611] mechanism, while applicants with preliminary data and a discrete, specified, circumscribed project can apply using the R01 [RFA-MH-18-610] mechanism.
