Unistar Nuclear Energy is seeking federal approval to build a new nuclear reactor at the Calvert Cliffs plant on the west bank of the Chesapeake Bay, just 45 miles from Washington, D.C., and 55 miles from Baltimore. At 1,600 megawatts, the new reactor would be easily the largest in the United States - and, at $10 billion, perhaps the most expensive. Supporters claim it will go a long way toward meeting future energy needs - and would do so in a "clean" manner.

Recently the Anglo-American establishment has made new diplomatic efforts to establish closer relations with India. The Global corporations have already invested hundreds of billions of dollars in that country that is famous for low labor wages. Meanwhile, the US has begun to distance itself from Pakistan its long time Jihadist partner, drug circulator, and number one terrorist recruiter. Ironically, after Musharraf the previous president of Pakistan who was forced to resign his post, retired to his lavish villa with a large bank account, and revenues from his book that was published by the giant US publisher and CIA outfit Simon & Shuster, the troubles in Pakistan have increasingly skyrocketed to a point of explosion.

Salt Lake City-based EnergySolutions Inc. announced increased profits and revenues for the third quarter. Net income jumped to $10.9 million, or 12 cents per share, compared with $200,000 in the same period last year. Revenues were $419 million, up 7.7 percent from $389 million from the quarter ending Sept. 30, 2007. "In summary, our core business remains strong in spite of the effects of the current turmoil in the financial markets," CEO R Steve Creamer said. "Our capital structure is sound, our debt levels are manageable and we have over $100 million of cash and undrawn lending commitments from our banks." The Homer Laughlin China Company (HLC) operates on the banks of the Ohio River in Newell, West Virginia, located in the state's northern panhandle. HLC's 37-acre site contains a number of plant buildings and structures used in the production of commercial and retail tableware.

Plans to clean up the Atlas tailings pile outside Moab are the subject of a meeting planned Thursday by the U.S. Energy Department. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Moab's Grand Center, 182 N. 500 West. The public will be updated about what is being done to begin hauling the 16 million tons of tailings and other uranium-ore-processing waste from the banks of the Colorado north of Moab to a newly constructed disposal site 32 miles north at Crescent Junction. - Judy Fahys Advertisement Return to Top

The US is prepared to help other countries develop nuclear energy, including by "assisting with the necessary financing," President Bush told the International Atomic Energy Agency's General Conference in Vienna Monday. Bush's message was delivered as part of more extensive remarks by US Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman, who also said, "We must make the development of a global commercial nuclear infrastructure a priority." Bodman also called on other IAEA member states to establish an international fuel bank that would begin operations by the end of the year. The fuel bank's goal would be to provide an incentive to countries with new nuclear power programs to refrain from pursuing indigenous uranium enrichment programs.

For the past year, we served on the Governor's Climate, Energy & Commerce Advisory Committee. CECAC represented a wide range of interests, including utilities, industry and banking. CECAC's final report concluded that nuclear energy is an important part of the state's energy future. However, we adopted an extremely cautious position on reprocessing.

Yesterday, the Department of Energy (DOE) reaffirmed its prior decision to relocate the uranium mill tailings predominantly by rail from Moab, Utah. The tailings will be trained from the banks of the Colorado River 30 miles north to Crescent Junction, Utah. DOE may still consider using truck transport under certain circumstances, but it won't be the primary mode of transportation for the contaminated pile.

At $18.5 billion, the US Department of Energy's loan guarantee program for new nuclear reactors is "undersized," John Gilbertson, a managing director at investment bank Goldman Sachs said Thursday. That would only be enough for about three new reactors, Gilbertson said at a Center for Strategic and International Studies meeting on the business case for nuclear power.

A worker at Ukraine's embassy in Germany has been arrested on charges of attempted smuggling of radioactive materials. The man and the security manager of a local bank were detained near the central Ukrainian city of Cherkassy with radioactive metals in their possession worth 3.1 million euros ($4.9 million), said police, as reported by the Interfax news agency on Monday, July 7.

The board of nuclear generator British Energy is expected to recommend a £10bn takeover bid by French giant EDF within a fortnight. An announcement could be made as early as this week. The remaining rival bidders - German group RWE and Spanish utility Iberdrola, which owns Scottish Power - have not formally withdrawn from the auction. But banking sources said this weekend that it was unlikely that either would now table a firm offer for British Energy, the UK's largest power generator.

Twenty-one percent of Americans would support a new nuclear power plant in their hometown, according to a survey released June 2 by investment bank RBC Capital Markets. This is up from 17% support in last year's survey,

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has granted Russia more than 70 million euros for disposing of scrapped nuclear ships and submarines moored at naval bases in Russia's northwest. Russia's state nuclear corporation -- Rosatom -- and the EBRD signed four relevant agreements on June 5.

PINGP is located in the city of Red Wing, Minnesota, on the west bank of the Mississippi River.

PARIS, May 12 (IPS) - Some international organisations and governments in industrialised countries are pushing for further development of nuclear power, but amidst growing doubts over the safety of several nuclear installations. Concerns have arisen particularly over nuclear power stations in France, Germany, and Bulgaria. Environmental organisations such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth (FoE) are condemning the involvement of French bank BNP Paribas in construction of the nuclear power station at Belene near the Danube River in northern Bulgaria.

When Progress Energy announced plans more than two years ago to build a nuclear plant in Levy County, the project met little resistance. Electric bills were a lot lower, the utility's customer base was still growing and the Legislature had just passed a nuclear-friendly law to encourage construction. Then it came: An economic recession led by a surge in housing foreclosures, a collapse of the banking industry and the loss of millions of jobs. For the first time in memory, Progress Energy began losing customers in Florida. Last month, homeowners and businesses began receiving the tab for Progress Energy's nuclear plant. The consumer outrage has led lawmakers to call for changes. Suddenly, Florida's appetite for an expensive nuclear plant has diminished. At least $4 billion of the $17 billion project is still slated to be collected from Progress Energy customers before the plant is even completed in 2017.

Ottawa's riverkeeper is growing increasingly concerned about an aging nuclear reactor sitting on the shore of the city's primary source of drinking water. Meredith Brown released a two-page report earlier this week that outlines concern over recent leaks at the Chalk River nuclear facility. "Under the best of circumstances I am uncomfortable with the very idea of a nuclear reactor operating on the banks of the Ottawa River," said Brown. "However, when that reactor is old and prone to leaks, I am particularly concerned. Even more alarming is the fact that these leaks are not reported to the public in detail in a timely manner."

Russian state uranium holding Atomenergoprom said on Tuesday it had bought stakes in uranium deposits located in Kazakhstan from tycoon Vladimir Anisimov for an undisclosed sum through its unit Atomredmetzoloto (ARMZ). State-controlled Gazprombank, the banking arm of Russian gas giant Gazprom (GAZP.MM), said in a separate statement it had provided ARMZ with a loan for the acquisition of the assets.
