"Guy Kawasaki last week wrote an item describing 'ten things you should learn this school year' in which readers were advised to learn how to write five sentence emails, create powerpoint slides, and survive boring meetings. It was, to my view, advice on how to be a business toady. My view is that people are worth more than that, that pleasing your boss should be the least of your concerns, and that genuine learning means something more than how to succeed in a business environment. But what should you learn? Your school will try to teach you facts, which you'll need to pass the test but which are otherwise useless. In passing you may learn some useful skills, like literacy, which you should cultivate. But Guy Kawasaki is right in at least this: schools won't teach you the things you really need to learn in order to be successful, either in business (whether or not you choose to live life as a toady) or in life. Here, then, is my list. This is, in my view, what you need to learn in order to be successful. Moreover, it is something you can start to learn this year, no matter what grade you're in, no matter how old you are. I could obviously write much more on each of these topics. But take this as a starting point, follow the suggestions, and learn the rest for yourself. And to educators, I ask, if you are not teaching these things in your classes, why are you not?"

In this section, we take a similar approach as with our Great Tech Tools. In order to help educators integrate iPads effectively, we have compiled a list of apps focused on learning goals consistent with the CRCD framework. While many of these apps have also appeared in our iPads in the Classroom section, this list is driven by specific learning goals that promote critical-thinking, creativity, collaboration, and the creation of student-centric learning environments.

Ok, so you've probably seen some of these, but I needed a snazzy title. I recently compiled two lists of sites from Richard Byrne's Blog - the site is an amazing resource, and I'm pretty certain that Richard doesn't sleep. These aren't in order of greatness - they all have their own specific applications for education.

Learning games.

The player must select the correct answer words to complete the sentence. This game focuses on sentence structure and word order, and depending on the answer options that appear in the game, it can be used to for practising agreements, adjectival endings, articles or many other grammatical points. "

As usual, in order to make this list, a site had to be: * accessible to English Language Learners and non-tech savvy users. * free-of-charge. * appropriate for classroom use. * completely browser-based with no download required.

Hot Web Apps for HOTS 23 Jan Apps and web apps are only as purposeful as the products and projects that they are used to create. After spending copious amounts of time publishing "Hot Apps 4 HOTS" to iBooks, I felt I should allocate some time to focus on web apps and how they too can be used to support higher order thinking skills.

Diigo and Prezi I think that diigo is wonderful. It is such a good way to organise your bookmarks. It's also a great way to collaborate on resources. I often find great websites that my colleagues may find useful, though I'm never quite sure if they are worthy of clogging their inboxes. With diigo I can just add to a group list and then everyone can access them. Getting something like that up and running is definitely a goal for next year. The head librarian at my school is also very excited about diigo and I have drawn her a very messy diagram of how diigo groups can work. In order to tick two things of my list I thought I would use prezi to put together a clear explanation of diigo.

PhotoPeach allows you to easily use images and music to tell a story. PhotoPeach also allows quizzes and user comments. Start by defining the goals for the project. Do you want a visual way to communicate a topic? Are you introducing a new topic? Are students trying to demonstrate mastery of a subject? Begin by uploading photos or bringing them in from a website such as Flickr. Arrange them in the right order to tell your story and add your music, special effects such as zooming and captions. Save your project so it can be embedded into a blog, wiki or even Facebook.

A school's Acceptable Use Policy, or AUP, is a list of technology regulations that require students to use technology responsibly and prevent abuse of school computers. Students are often required to sign this "user contract" in order to use school network computers but unfortunately many sign without reading or understanding the information. The Smart AUP assessment tool is a fun and effective way for students to demonstrate to teachers and administrators that they have read and understand the AUP. In addition, administrators can produce the Smart AUP score report as evidence of a student's policy comprehension if the need arises.

The ProProfs website has lots of free online games for gifted children, but the best place to start is with the logic games. Leapfroggies, Chess, Sliding Block Puzzles, Mazes, Nonograms, and SHOT are all great games to get started with, as each involves some kind of higher level thinking in order to be successful. There are many more online games that would also be suitable for gifted children in the Brain Teasers or Brain Training sections. Just click the links at the top of the page and explore.
