What it is: What makes technology SO great is the way that it can make life (and teaching) more productive and fun. Over the years, I have found so many ways that technology can make reading more rewarding for both kids who love to read, and kids who dread reading. Today, I created an "Extreme Speed Booking" website for @michellek107′s class at Anastasis. I created the site quickly using Weebly, an awesome WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) website editor. Drag and drop website building is where it is at! The idea behind the site is to introduce students to a variety of books and form classroom book groups. How does Extreme Speed Booking work? A whole lot like speed dating. :) Students spend a little time with each book and then rate them accordingly with "I want to read more", "Interesting", "Not for me", or "I've already read". Students can also make a note of how interested they are in reading the book (maybe a 1-10 scale)? This process introduces students to a variety of books, genres and authors. Students may come across titles and authors they wouldn't otherwise find. It also helps teachers form classroom book groups that are of high-interest and investment to students because they had input.

A Kiwi VLN (think PLN) for teachers working with ipods/ipads, could be a good place to bounce ideas, share resources etc

Jigsaw is a cooperative learning strategy that enables each student of a "home" group to specialize in one aspect of a learning unit. Students meet with members from other groups who are assigned the same aspect, and after mastering the material, return to the "home" group and teach the material to their group members.

"What is Diigo? For those of you unfamiliar with Diigo, it is a social bookmarking tool that allows you to annotate, archive and organize websites. With Diigo, you can save websites into a public or private library, highlight information within text and images, add sticky note comments directly on websites, tag sites for easy retrieval later, and share bookmarks with friends, groups, and networks. Diigo integrates the use of tags and folders, highlighting and clipping, sticky notes and group-based collaboration to better manage online information."

It has an easy to master interface which allows for a lot of fun creativity. The edu. version of the site allows up to 200 students to be managed under a teacher account. Glogs can be linked or embed into your wiki or other online site. Teachers may introduce Glogster using this group project, however it's real strength is when students create glogs to demonstrate mastery of learning. Rather than create a poster or another PowerPoint presentation they create an interactive glog."

This educational outreach program from the Beckman Institute's Imaging Technology Group at the University of Illinois supports K-16 classrooms worldwide. Bugscope allows teachers everywhere to provide students with the opportunity to become microscopists themselves-the kids propose experiments, explore insect specimens at high-magnification, and discuss what they see with our scientists-all from a regular web browser over a standard broadband internet connection. "
