New York Times technology blogs are located here. The articles are very current. I (as a teacher) will probably benefit from these sites as much as my students. I plan on posting the YouTube "Blogs in Education" video along with these blogs, because the video gives a good description, application and history of blogs.

In addition to the comment that populated itself below, I want to add that this link contains a list of etiquette rules for Twitter that I think are very useful for a newbie. Twitter has proven itself to be an indispensable tool for educators around the globe. Whatever skill level you may be, Twitter is downright fun and worth your time. So here's a useful guide that we curated from Edudemic's archives in an effort to put something together that was a bit easier to read than random blog posts.

I never thought Snapchat would work in a classroom setting. I think it's time for me to stop being too old school and meet my students in the middle and allow them to enjoy my messages in whatever reasonable way that is necessary.

Performance assessment, also known as alternative or authentic assessment, is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list. For example, a student may be asked to explain historical events, generate scientific hypotheses, solve math problems, converse in a foreign language, or conduct research on an assigned topic. Experienced raters--either teachers or other trained staff--then judge the quality of the student's work based on an agreed-upon set of criteria. This new form of assessment is most widely used to directly assess writing ability based on text produced by students under test instructions

This is the first of three articles in a series that discusses the reasons for integrating Twitter into online and face-to-face classes, necessary steps leading to the integration, and several ideas for Twitter activities in a course.

Many regard Twitter as quite a useless social media sharing portal. Some have this negative opinion, mainly because of the fact Twitter allows you to "tweet" or post only 140 characters in length. This length equals the text of a regular SMS, and for some this is simply not enough.

I found a good list of how one teacher uses Twitter in the classroom. Personally, I love the idea of a hashtag for a specific class.

I hear complaints about the poor quality of student writing today as often as I read stories about the Internet causing the end of higher education as we know it (i.e., frequently). When those complaints come in the form of actual conversations with peers, instead of in print, I feel myself immediately put on the defensive.

Thanks for this post Heather. I liked that the instructor recognized that despite some challenges with using a new technique to promote his students' writing skills the energy that was expressed by his students far outweighed the "mess" that he dealt with the first time trying something new.

The lack of learning transfer is a common mantra in higher education. It's a good article for reflection. Although I've been a proponent of service learning, at the same time, I wasn't sure how students could or if they would transfer their experiences to the academic component. Now, I need to rethink my position on service learning and its impact on connected learning

I have used Poll Everywhere, Padlet, Google Docs/Forms for checking students' group work in class, but I've always wanted a simple tool that takes a second for students to complete and another second for me to check their completion but a tool where students don't get to "cheat" by peeking at what other groups are writing because they can't see what other students are typing until they post their answers!

Great easy to use.

You can develop your own questions, use their test bank, or import your existing quizzes. You can select the order of the questions, indicate scores for passing, will show you their score at the completion of the quiz and reveal the correct answer to the questions. Very easy to follow. Almost no learning curve. I would definitely use this in an online class to assess students understanding of concepts covered. I would offer it either as a review or as a quiz itself.

There are distinctions between traditional face-to-face and online teaching and learning. Academic policies must address both contexts. I need to read this article a little closer. We are offering our first fully online language courses for Elem and Interm Spanish this summer. Although the grad students teaching this course will make the same amount of salary as those teaching the hybrid classes, I have a feeling they will be spending a lot more time on it. And then, we have to be careful if they go to their union about the differences in compensation.
