I hear complaints about the poor quality of student writing today as often as I read stories about the Internet causing the end of higher education as we know it (i.e., frequently). When those complaints come in the form of actual conversations with peers, instead of in print, I feel myself immediately put on the defensive.

Thanks for this post Heather. I liked that the instructor recognized that despite some challenges with using a new technique to promote his students' writing skills the energy that was expressed by his students far outweighed the "mess" that he dealt with the first time trying something new.

The lack of learning transfer is a common mantra in higher education. It's a good article for reflection. Although I've been a proponent of service learning, at the same time, I wasn't sure how students could or if they would transfer their experiences to the academic component. Now, I need to rethink my position on service learning and its impact on connected learning

Yes, there are a ton of great ed-tech tools out there, but which ones should you be adopting for your classroom? One of the best ways to narrow your choices is to get in touch with experts. I sent an email out to ed-tech experts (and great teachers) asking for their recommendations.

Hi Kathy, good solid article and my favorite part related to one of the pod casts that we were assigned for Module 4 this week in our TT class. DeMarias says that the synchronous on line class should not be a literal translation of the f2f and she suggests the same concept as this article: a reconceptualization of the course all together. My least favorite part of the article was that we are developing "digital citizens of tomorrow". I totally agree but the sound of it is so robotic. :)

As the world of web design progresses at a dizzying pace, education websites seem to be lost in the past, unable or unwilling to keep up. Anyone who has visited edu sites has probably had the experience: clunky user interface, incomprehensible navigation, ugly design, and no content of any real use for students. Abstract In something of a landmark for education Knowles (1970) suggested an important change in the way in which educational experiences for adults should be designed. The approach, known as andragogy, contrasts quite sharply with pedagogy which is the teaching of children. This paper suggests there is benefit in moving from andragogy towards truly self-determined learning. The concept of truly self-determined learning, called heutagogy, builds on humanistic theory and approaches to learning described in the 1950s. It is suggested that heutagogy is appropriate to the needs of learners in the twenty-first century, particularly in the development of individual capability. Abstract: As more and more instructors enter the world of online teaching and learning, a body of knowledge is emerging around the challenge of facilitating online interaction and fostering online collaboration. This paper draws from the literature on asynchronous learning and the authors' own experiences with online discussion and collaborative online projects. We identify a variety of techniques for focusing student dialogue, fostering an online learning community, and promoting successful collaboration. Instructors who are teaching wholly online courses or simply integrating online components into face-to-face classes will benefit from the observations and discussion.

I can't believe that people still believe all these myths. However I have colleagues that still resist even limited technology in hybrid classes.

This tool is mainly for instructors in the biological sciences. The site allows you to select high quality educational videos on a topic and easily build interactive questions on top of the videos.

Interesting read - I found the shift from taped lecture to a more interactive setting interesting... "Udacity, along with other MOOC designers, is moving rapidly away from the video lecture model of teaching toward an approach that is highly interactive and based on frequent quizzes and human "mentors" to provide active online support for students."

Kolowich, S. (2012) Who takes MOOCs? Inside Higher Education, June 5 Article about a survey of 14,000 participants in Stanford's Andrew Ng's course on machine learning. It should be noted that the response rate is around 14% of all those that enrolled. The most common reason was that participants were curious about the topic. NOTE from poster - take a look at Coursera as well.

October 19, 2011 "If seeing, hearing, or sharing with your online students could help the learning process, then Google+ Hangouts could be a great, engaging venue for your students." This site outlines 6 practical uses for Google Hangouts in an educational setting. Hangouts are great for small meeting of 10 or less. In this site, there are screenshots to explain the Hangouts with extras and screen sharing. This would be a great way for students to collaborate on a project.

In this article from The Gaurdian (UK) the author reports on a debate at King's College London where a respected panel and an energetic audience of students discussed the future of online technology and education. While students didn't think it was a big deal, not all of the educators saw technology and education flowing together so smoothly. A very interesting article.

#TT1921 This presentation software tool would be beneficial to my online learning because of the inbuilt mechanism that uses motion, zoom, and spatial relationships to bring one's ideas to life. With time, after gaining the skills to use it, one can be a great presenter. Great presentation with content would improve students' understanding and learning experience!
