A Wiki can be thought of as a combination of a Web site and a Word document. It provides a ready to use site with a simple user interface, ability to easily add pages, and simple navigation structure. This allows students to spend more time devel- oping the content of the site, instead of trying to learn how to make one.

Do you remember what inspired you to go to college? Take a minute, think back, and see if you can recall the specific moment. Maybe it was your first glimpse of a college campus near home. Maybe a trusted teacher encouraged you to study a field you loved.

A powerful reference database that can be used to keep track of sources and also integrated with word processors to generate bibliographies and such. This does a very good job of importing metadata from websites and online texts, and pulling additional information for sources from other databases. It would be nice if this were a bit more customizable, but it may get there in time. The folks developing this are very helpful and responsive to users.

I've been looking for ways that my Writing Center can offer synchronous online tutoring. Etherpad is a free, open source tool that I looked at, and Pirate Pad is one free site that uses it. It's neat and easy to use. Open a Pirate Pad, give the person a link, and you're off!

Sometime in June Sandy McAuley, Bonnie Stewart, George Siemens and I decided to apply to SSHRC for funding for researching the place of MOOCs in the digital economy. We did a little work creating videos to allow people to understand what was going on in a MOOC and decide if it was something they might want to do.

"Web 2.0" has become a catch-all buzzword that people use to describe a wide range of online activities and applications, some of which the Pew Internet & American Life Project has been tracking for years. As researchers, we instinctively reach for our spreadsheets to see if there is evidence to inform the hype about any online trend. What follows is a short history of the phrase, along with some data to help frame the discussion.

Video lessons are one of the primary technology tools used to deliver content in blended/flipped classrooms. The learning happens at home and when students are in class, they participate in active-learning activities or group work. Great to try out with a few lessons in f2f classes as well. It greatly increases student engagement and participation.

This abstract written by an engineering professor at Cal Poly Engineering offers research and support for a new trend in education called, "the Inside-Out Classroom." The abstract describes how the inside out classroom is a win-win-win strategy for teaching with technology. Instructors create "chunks" of core content in a digital, lecture-capture format. These resources are then stored online for students. These are short videos that students watch before attending class sessions. Students study core content for a course online on their own, and then complete assignments during in-class sessions.

This is a terrific article sharing tips about implementing new practices in your classes. Great primer on how to avoid common pitfalls, and help increase your chances for success. May the odds be ever in your favor!

For those who may be a bit unclear on how to use Twitter for a class, the article includes varied strategies. Some of the ideas have already been mentioned in our discussions and responses as we worked through the second module, but there are a few other points that may be noteworthy. Second, the article affirms some of the ideas already shared, especially for those of us who were initially unfamiliar with twitter's potential application.

I'm still not convinced I want to use Twitter in my classes, but this gives a lot of good information.

I must admit that when I first heard about Twitter I thought it represented the apex of what concerns me about internet technology: solipsism and sound-bite communication. While I obviously spend a great deal of time online and thinking about the potential of these new networked digital communication structures, I also worry about the way .....

It seems to be a wall where you can collaboratively post things. You do not need to sign up for an account to use it. From the little I've used it, it seems worth exploring. Lisa

I saw a presentation from NEIU librarians who discussed an Edit-A-Thon they held. It can be a good way to each students about the way information is generated online, and also can be used to teach research practices (such as correct use of citations), among other things.
