Tablets are poised to help U.S. newspapers increase paid digital circulation to 4.6 million in 2015, for example, with most of the growth coming at general interest newspapers, from 1.5 million last year, primarily at the Wall Street Journal, according to annual Global Entertainment and Media Outlook from PricewaterhouseCoopers, which was released today.
MediaPost Publications Apps Forecast To Lose Momentum 07/26/2012 - 0 views

"News and magazine apps are a segment where the momentum is likely to shift towards the Web within the next two to three years," noted senior analyst Aapo Markkanen. "Since news and media content already account for a large share of smartphone usage and are likely to play an even bigger role in later adopters' usage, changes in this segment alone will make subscribers on average download fewer native apps." The next wave of smartphone owners in mature markets like the U.S., Western Europe and Asia will download fewer apps than the first one-third of mobile consumers who bought smartphones, according to the report on mobile app storefronts. At the same time, ABI expects that in the games and utilities categories, the mobile Web will probably never catch up with native apps, due to the difficulty in matching the user experience. ABI's outlook on the future of apps appears at odds with a separate report released Tuesday by Strategy Analytics, which maintains that the emergence of HTML5 won't put much of a dent in the app economy. Instead, it predicts the Web programming language will lead to the spread of hybrid apps that combine HTML5 with native APIs (application programming interface) to harness the best of native and open standards.

Here are our thoughts regarding VR:VR will gain mass adoption regardless of the speed of hardware and content development. It's inevitable, no medium ever created is more powerful. Two dimensional screens are abstractions that we have adapted to but we are three dimensional beings. VR renders 3D experiences that induce cognitive and physiological responses because it convinces our brains the we are having "real" experiences. These immersive, persuasive and empathy-inducing experiences are irresistible. With that said, while content and tech are highly synergistic, we would give content a slight edge in importanceFor mass adoption hardware needs to crack the code of: Powerful, Simple and Cheap. So far, the most successful “high end”hardware is the PSVR which is simple and cheapAs part of the "simple" criteria, hardware will also need to be mobile and non-tethered (we are getting close in headsets - Oculus Go - and 5G networks will be key to delivering powerful, non-tethered content)Inexpensive headsets will drive adoption, great content will keep people coming back.Content needs to move beyond gaming and deliver amazing experiences for general entertainment, social engagement and training/education. Interactivity is key to a compelling experience. If they are interested Jerry and I are available next Tuesday-Thursday (Jan 19-21) from 11AM-2PMCheers,J
