Students will investigate the field of architecture as a career choice, with specific research into the use of geometric shapes (polygons) in building design and construction. In the first part of the project the students will use a digital camera to record examples of the use of polygons in building design in their communities. They will present their findings to the class using a PowerPoint slide show. In the second they complete a drawing of a building as per the instructions in the Explain and Elaborate section

This cartoon project is a fun activity that allows students to apply their knowledge of ratio and proportion.

Numbers can't "talk," but they can tell you as much as your human sources can. But just like with human sources, you have to ask! So what should you ask a number? Well, mathematicians have developed an entire field - statistics - dedicated to getting answers out of numbers. Now, you don't have to have a degree in statistics in order to conduct an effective "interview" with your data. But you do need to know a few basics. As a college president, I ask students and graduates what are we doing correctly and what can we improve upon. The typical responses to how we can improve are not surprising - more parking and more financial aid (often in that order). Lately the most common answer from recent graduates as to how we can improve has been surprising - more education about financial literacy and the practical aspects of living in today's world.

This problem presents students with a "which-is-thebest-buy" scenario involving admission to an amusement park. Students choose between four different admission rates, and then must justify why they selected the rate that they did.

Writing about mathematics, developing a disposition for mathematical thinking, demonstrating a conceptual understanding of mathematical topics are all more important than procedures. That said, procedures are still important, and Khan Academy provides one venue where students can learn them. In the end, I think every young person should have an account there. Even if only one in a thousand or ten thousand benefit, that would be a terrific outcome. "

he second event aims to finish the current draft of the Gr 10 ML textbook, in collaboration with interested educators and post-grad students. This Grade 10 Maths Lit textbook will be available for use in 2013 and beyond, and have its own website, be available via cellphone, on Mxit, as a PDF and in print. We are in serious negotiations with DBE to have it printed for all government schools next year.
