ELISA - English Language Interview Corpus as a Second-Language Learning Application - 0 views

    The ELISA corpus is being developed at the University of Tuebingen (Dept of Applied English Linguistics, AEL) and the University of Surrey (Dept of Languages and Translation Studies, LTS) as a resource for language learning and teaching, and interpreter training. It contains interviews with native speakers of English. They talk about their professional career (e.g. in tourism, politics, the media or environmental education). We are very grateful to all speakers for their kind contributions. You can use our Concordancer (written in PERL) on text versions of all corpus files. It can be utilized to extract KWIC concordances with variable context length, sentence concordances and word counts.

Reading Classroom Explorer - 1 views

The video footage of exemplary teachers teaching reading drives users' inquiries. SACODEYL European Youth Language - 0 views

    SACODEYL presents an innovative ICT-based solution for the compilation and pedagogical, language learning-oriented exploitation of linguistic teen talk oral corpora. SACODEYL is an integration initiative that takes into account areas as: 1. multilingual corpus compilation and innovation support, 2. pedagogical adaptation of existing ICT tools for the integration of corpora and corpus-based methods of Data Driven Learning (DDL) into mainstream language teaching, and 3. know-how building which will contribute to the future drafting of specifications that can take both DDL and the use of oral corpora in language education a step forward. SACODEYL sees itself as a pedagogical mediator in the language learning process of young European, exploiting ICT resources to deliver learning experiences based on data driven, constructivist approaches to language acquisition. SACODEYL will demand young learners of languages across Europe to personally explore, and engage in learning tasks of different nature.

The project includes the collection and distribution of English, French, German, Italian, Lithuanian, Romanian, and Spanish teen talk.     "Hosted by: Dr. Abigail Grant Scheg (Elizabeth State University) Date: November 29, 2012 Text messaging, in and out of the classroom, is often viewed as a negative communicative mode which results in poor grammar and poor idea representation, let alone student procrastination from more important projects. However, as Web 2.0 technologies increase in number and popularity, these tools are changing the face of education, business, and communication at large. This session will discuss the pedagogical possibilities using text messaging and ways to incorporate texting into the classroom or as part of a class in a way that will make the instructor feel comfortable. Starting with the idea that our students are experts in the technology of text messaging, this session will allow the instructor to utilize students' skills in a positive light rather than dismiss them as unimportant. In this presentation, author Dr. Abigail Grant Scheg will discuss her IGI Global chapter, Textperts: Utilizing Students' Skills in the Teaching of Writing. Her research explores both the theoretical and practical implementations of text messaging into the composition of the classroom with careful consideration of the positive and negative impacts."

The Handbook gives teachers a wide variety of tasks and activities to use in the classroom along with ideas for adapting these activities for different levels and languages and longer curricular packages.The Handbook was originally created by members of the Minnesota Articulation Project. There is also a parallel site in Spanish, which might be useful for beginning-level Spanish learners.

Library of Foreign Language Film Clips - BLCwiki - 1 views

    The Berkeley Language Center has created a library of foreign language clips, each tagged for the vocabulary in the target language and for English descriptors (culture, linguistics, speech acts). Instructors are able to search the library for a clip of interest and then 'order' the clip (a URL is created linking to an mp4 file; the URL stays active for two weeks). Currently we have 5200 clips in 15 languages, and those numbers continue to grow.
