he principle aim of the NHS Evidence service is to provide easy access to a comprehensive evidence base for everyone in health and social care who takes decisions about treatments or the use of resources - including clinicians, public health professionals, commissioners and service managers - thus improving health and patient care. It will build on NICE's significant international reputation for developing high quality evidence-based guidance. It provides access to a range of information types, including primary research literature, practical implementation tools, guidelines and policy documents.

"These patient decision aids (PDAs) have been developed to help support difficult decisions in which patients need to consider benefits versus risks. Decision aids prepare patients for decision-making by increasing their knowledge about expected outcomes and personal values. The PDAs are based on the best available evidence but are not a substitute for a discussion with a suitably skilled healthcare professional. I heard Trojanowski (the senior author) talk about this last month at the annual meeting of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. It's a very interesting topic with a lot of social ramifications. The statement in the absrract that among people with mild cognitive impairment, the biomarker profile had a 100% sensitivity for development of AD needs to be carefully considered. First, the metric that is of greater interest is the positive predictive value. Second, it is known that some patients who have the classic AD findings at autopsy did not have mental impairment in life. We know this from the Nun study.
