It requires a paid subscription, but is not too expensive and can make your classroom library ten times as big. This would directly impact my smart learning goal: 80% of students will reach level K in reading (lowest grade-appropriate reading level for second grade) by the beginning of the December. These books use the same level system and the teacher can assign specific texts for students to read to aid in the fluency and comprehension skills.

Main idea is a difficult skill for many readers. In order to be successful students need to be able to make inferences and determine the importance. Those are tricky prerequisite skills for students to grasp as they require higher order thinking. However, being able to successfully understand the main idea of a text leads to other skills like comparing and contrasting multiple texts. So how can a teacher effectively help their students master this skill? I am a special educator at RHHS in Howard County. As a special educator, I have been tasked with teaching Tutorial classes that were created to help students with disabilities receive service hours in various goal areas. Last year, was the first year that I attempted to implement SMART Goals into my classroom. Most students struggle to determine their personal SMART Goal and use it to help them focus on improving specific skills. This year, one of my midyear assignments required students to develop a SMART Goal for the following quarter. Students were asked to read and annotate an article, then discuss what they learned with their peers through a classroom discussion. We are now in Quarter 3 and some students have already achieved their SMART Goals from Q2. I found it interesting that part of this week's assignment was to find articles to help support our data analyzing from Venables by developing SMART Goals based on our macro and micro data. I have never thought of using a SMART Goal to improve my professional practices. I think that this could be a wonderful idea, however, I am nervous to develop a SMART Goal because I do not have control over many of the aspects in the classrooms that I support. For the purpose of this class, I will be creating a SMART Goal that I believe would benefit my students. I will share it with my co-teachers and see what they think. The resource that I provided gives examples of professional and student SMART Goals. I found that no only did students struggle to determine what a SMART Goal should measure, but I am facing that same difficulty. I wanted to provide my peers a reference of some achievable and specific SMART Goals that they could use as a model when creating their own.

The best practices which stood out most to me are eliciting nonverbal responses when students need to demonstrate understanding, such as a simple thumbs up or thumbs down. This allows students to answer questions without having to produce the language. In addition, this resource supports my SMART target learning goal to support students with explaining how to solve for an unknown in an equation. The resource suggests using sentence frames so students can better participate in discussions, which also provides structure as students explain their mathematical thinking.

This seems like a great resource! Colonial times is a part of my curriculum, and so I definitely plan on integrating this resource into my instruction. There are various features of this website that would motivate and engage students. Great find!

With Splashtop software I am able to access my laptop through my iPad. This software allows me to move freely around my classroom and instruct. In our health lessons I am able to display our power points or access online resources on my computer from my iPad. It also has a tool called whiteboard, which allows me to draw, highlight, circle, or point out different things that are displayed on my screen. This could really come in handy when we talk about different muscles in the body and allow me to really point out a specific muscle. This is a great resource for a teacher, but unfortunately is not free.

Portable Word Wall and other Word Wall ideas to support struggling readers. I have used Word Walls in the past, but I have not used them for individual students. This form of differentiation can be taken with the student to a reading specialist, brought home, or used in the classroom to support instruction.

This is a perfect resource for students who have trouble writing notes, need to review, or missed class. Teachers could attach a link for a particular lesson to your class website for students to review before class or before a test.
