Combination circuit tutorial

This is a website that helps connect students to the real world. It take a wide array of places you use math and sometimes don't think about it, like sports, music, fashion, restaurants and so many more. Videos are shown to show how math and the topic relate to each other and then students are given a task to help figure out using math. Students will be so engaged that they will forget they are even doing math!

This article by Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey gives suggestions for meaningful vocabulary instruction. In order for this to occur students need to have opportunities to interact with the words, to make personal connections to the vocabulary and to consolidate their knowledge. Because all teachers, no matter their content area, have to teach vocabulary this article has value for all teachers looking to improve the way they approach vocabulary instruction. (Week 8)

Simple circuit activities (technology or physics classes).

This is a great site for teachers that has free feature and a cheap pay feature. The free feature will still give educators access to worksheets, but with the paid for version you can edit the worksheets to fit more of your classroom style. This helps tie real world problems into the math classroom, helping with the age old question "When will I ever use this." Hopefully this connection will help students not only enjoy math but remember it more too.

Lesson plan for studying Victor Hugo's Les Misérables with students using novel and character summaries in the target language. While the multiple choice questions in the lesson are mere comprehension questions, some of the discussion questions address main idea and supporting details. Teachers could also develop their own multiple choice questions for the passages to address main idea and supporting details.

Week 8 - Virgil

Week 9: This article deals with integrating technology in the classroom. Although, a lot of what is discussed in the article has been talked about in some of the courses, the on paragraph I like and find helpful is on Using Technology for Feedback and Assessment. It provides a few online tools that could help teachers get quick feedback on a lesson. Teachers could use this to help with using different technology tools to gain feedback from their students.

This article by Sunday Cummins focuses on teaching students how to self-monitor while reading difficult texts. It suggests teaching students the coding method to help them learn how to self-monitor. Using meaningful symbols to mark up a text students learn how to evaluate what they understand and what they still need to comprehend as well how to go about achieving that deeper comprehension. (Week 7)

This article addresses aspects of my groups exploration of student reading level ability and achievement on state tests on critical reading. In this article, the author suggests the implementation of a coding method while reading in order to teach students how to self-inform their reading in order to improve upon the student's ability to conduct close readings of informational text. This is just the sort of strategy that could assist IEP and ESOL students (2 subset groups of struggling readers) to improve the learning gap when it comes to reading for meaning.

This article provides a wonderful overview of ways to involve families in a learning community at school across multiple subject areas. However, there is a large focus on reading and ways to foster family involvement in developing early literacy skills at home. This will be an excellent resource for our group as we begin to design a plan for supporting students in Kindergarten in their ability to blend words and recall high frequency words in text.

Our group's EQ relates to how ESOL and Special Education students perform on state tests in English. The article here is from Arizona and is a study in how well English Language Learners performed on their state mandated tests. The document outlines the issues that English learners have in their school along with teacher and district recommendations on how to help improve student scores.

This is an interview of Michael Horn who is an advocate of Blended Learning. In his interview he deals with the topics of student motivation and the use of blended learning to close student learning gaps.

Week 9 - This article by Leonore Ganschow and Elke Schneiderm provide an excellent description of students who struggle with learning a foreign language, yet they provide excellent strategies to assess and accomplish such task. The articles provides a summary of research findings with regards to at-risk students and foreign language learning, what administrators can do, and recommendations for the study of a foreign language.
