Closing the Achievement Gap Through Teacher Collaboration - 3 views

    (Week 7 Jason Caputo and Ericka Posey- Group 8) This article is available through the UMUC library through the permalink above. This article examines a teacher directed model for closing achievement gaps. It explains why administrator driven directives and extensive scripting of curriculum are not always successful in closing achievement gaps. It explains the "risk is that prescriptive, bureaucratic approaches will drive talented and thoughtful teachers out of specific schools or the entire profession"(Levine and Marcus, 2007) However, it also points out potential flaws in systems without some oversight of teachers. In the case study presented, teachers avoid asking tough questions about instructional challenges, methods, and expectations/standards. Despite their good intentions and implementation of some effective strategies, during their team meeting/PLC time, "requests for help occurred around specific students or parents; teachers did not use this particular forum as a site for seeking help with core instructional challenges" (Levine and Marcus, 2007). While they are able to reduce some of the achievement gap, there is significant room for growth in their professional practice. The protocols discussed in our course address this, as they provide a professional and polite way to ask challenging questions about professional practice. References Levine, T. H., & Marcus, A. S. A Meta-analysis for Mathematics Instructional Interventions for Students with Learning ... - 2 views

    Meta-analysis was conducted on interventions used for mathematics with students with learning disabilities. There were four instructional components examine to determine their effectiveness and impact -- a) approached to instruction and/or curriculum design, b) formative assessment data and feedback to teachers, c) formative assessment data and feedback to students and d) peer-assisted mathematics instruction. The research indicates the positive impact of cognitive strategies and the direct instruction model for mathematics instruction. The information was beneficial. Direct instruction often used for reading instruction of students with disabilities so it only makes sense that is also works for math instruction. Research-based information helps me determine what instructional strategies and practices I will include in my classroom.

This journal article discusses the challenges that nearly all teachers face in classes where there they encounter students of mixed abilities. The article provides solutions such as 'provided specific activities for varying students', and notes that teachers with a 'positive attitude toward mixed abilities' correlate to more positive outcomes within their classrooms (Al-Subaiei, 2017). Teachers in our team can use this information because the problem of having students of mixed abilities is a ubiquitous one. It enlightens the reader that many teachers have not received adequate training regarding differentiation to provide effective lessons to classes that contain learners of mixed abilities. While Al-Subaiei (2017) doesn't offer solutions specific to any particular subject area, it certainly does shine a light and help teachers reflect on an issue that we all face to varying degrees.     Jennifer, I really like this article. It can be frustrating enough for parents and students when reading difficulties occur. Add to this complication learning difficulties, and the problems and insecurities really start to add up. This article, and the years of research that it is based on helped to enumerate the many reading interventions that already exist for students with documented learning disabilities. I will definitely use these in the future in order to combat such problems. Victoria

You can create a Symbaloo for your students that houses links for research, tools for formating, and helpful sites for assignments. This type of site takes the "Google it" mentality out of the equation; you provide the links to where you want to direct students when they engage with the technology. This site could be applicable for any grade level or any discipline. This is a free resource, but you must create an account.

    This resource is appropriate for all grade levels, as it contains a variety of routines that can be applied to a wide range of content. There are routines that address most of the different levels of Bloom's Taxonomy, so it is easy to find one to fit your needs. I haven't used the resource yet myself, but certainly will in the future. In addition, the Digital Toolkit provides links to dozens of other digital tools and breaks down their uses in education. This is a great place to find other educational technology.

    I love this- thanks for sharing! The digital toolkit is a gold mine of resources. I particularly like how it gives additional information beyond just the link. I also like the role cards. Since I have trouble with students working in groups, this could be a fun way to assign jobs and attempt to keep things on track!
