Mathematical Technology in ER9 3 views

"The focus of this digitally mediated learning activity centers on the mathematics department in the Easton and Redding (ER9) school district in Connecticut. Currently, ER9 teachers have technology in the classroom, but many teachers have expressed uncertainty about how to implement this technology in their classrooms. Based on the foundations of the constructivist learning theory, math teachers will learn how technology fits into the student learning cycle. Interested teachers will form a community of practice (CoP) to learn about and apply engaging technology in the classroom. Some technologies discussed include gamebased learning, mobile/Web 2.0 apps such as Prezi, Animation and Edmodo. As a result of this technology CoP, teachers will learn to implement at least one new technology into their classroom and engage in communication between CoP members using MOODLE. "
Teaching Community College Mathematics: Unlocking the Variables 2 views

Abstract :"The nation's remedial math programs are failing students. New, effective, and dramatic changes are required to reverse the trend. Acknowledging the
plight of community college remedial math students, this white
paper discusses critical variables in planning and implementing
instruction. Absent of a consensus in the U.S. political landscape on
how to effectively provide remedial mathematics instruction, the
authors suggest instructional variables to support mathematics
faculty, administrators, tutors and advising staff in changing the
disheartening data and experience."
CREATIVE LITTLE SCIENTISTS: Enabling Creativity through Science and Mathematics in Pres... 3 views

"This National report examines the way in which teaching, learning and assessment is conceptualised in Welsh policy for early years science and mathematics, and the role for creativity. This report is one of 13 European national policy reports that are contributing to the Creative Little Scientist Project deliverable (D3.2 Report on Mapping and Comparing Recorded Practices) mapping and comparing policy approaches across Europe.
In order to map the key messages in Welsh policy, as well as allow comparisons with other nations, this report draws upon a survey instrument used to rate the extent to which certain approaches, and the role of creativity is emphasised across relevant policy documents in this area. In the case of Wales, this was largely based upon the Framework for Children's Learning for 3 to 7 year olds in Wales, Play/Active Learning: overview for 3 to 7 year olds, the National Curriculum documents for Key Stage 2, associated assessment documents and inspection reports. Assessing our current process of math (mis)placement 3 views

A college institutional researcher reveals some data concerning math placement tests and the pressures impacting students to opt for more difficult math courses without adequate preparation and unsatisfactory results. He writes: "In my mind, this disconnect exemplifies the degree to which incoming students and families don't grasp the difference between going to college to acquire content knowledge and going to college to develop skills and dispositions. ... [I]f students understand that college is about developing skills and dispositions, I think that they might be more likely to appreciate the chance to start at the beginning that is appropriate for them, savoring each experience like a slow cooked, seven course meal because they know that the culmination of college is made exponentially better by the particular ordering and integrating of the flavors that have come before."
Reading, Mathematics, and Science Achievement of LanguageMinority Students in Grade 8 1 views

"This Issue Brief examines 8thgrade achievement in reading, mathematics, and science for language minority students (i.e., those from homes in which the primary language was one other than English) who began kindergarten in the 199899 school year. Data come from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 199899 (ECLSK), which tracked the educational experiences of a nationally representative sample of children who were in kindergarten in the 199899 school year. The analyses present a picture of students' achievement at the end of the study by focusing on students' scores on the standardized assessments that were administered in the spring of 2007, when most students were in grade 8. Students are categorized into four groups according to language background and English language proficiency. Additionally, assessment scores are reported by three background characteristicsstudents' race/ethnicity, poverty status, and mother's educationthat have been found to be related to achievement."

Writing in Mathematics: Assessing Understanding Teaching Science and Math 16 views

Writing in math is an excellent way to determine if students' understand or do not understand the math they are learning about.
Allowing students to explain how they solved a math problem, how they developed a formula to solve a problem, or how they applied a math concept requires critical thinking.
