Joe, I know Michelle Shupp has her Latin IV students use Google Sites for the past few years. There are also a few middle school teachers using them. I'm really intrigued by the idea of our students creating digital portfolios that can follow them even beyond high school.
Greg Burrows at the middle school has spent some time researching digital portfolios and has spoken with me about them. Maybe the social studies department is a place to begin something with students?? I know science is also talking about the passport idea that passes along with students. I wonder what they are using to track their idea.
If you're not worried about the students not knowing who is going to get their note, Google Docs would work. Thinking about how we've done note pass in PLN, usually students just pass their note around the table. In Google Docs, the teacher could have each student start a document (if he/she wanted a quote or prompt at the top, the teacher could start the doc and share it with the kids and have them make their own copy). Students could write their own ideas and then share their document with the student next to them, who then adds the next part. This would require some management and instruction the first time, but so does the traditional note pass activity.
Of course, students are not employees, and classrooms are not companies. But the paper says that in both cases, the main goal is essentially the same: creating a happy climate that encourages and maximizes positive results.
