    Wavefront, a National Centre of Excellence supporting the growth and commercialization of wireless companies in Canada, is providing MaRS Commons with a mobile handset library consisting of the most popular handsets available. This means that wireless application developers no longer need to buy the multitude of handsets required to test their applications, saving time and money - a fact known to wireless innovators who have already taken advantage of Wavefront's handset library in Vancouver.

    Canada has joined Australia, Finland, Ireland, India, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom in providing nationwide access to the Cochrane Library, a collection of evidence-based medicine reviews and a critical health sciences resource. The current pilot project, which runs through the end of 2009, allows all Canadian users to access the complete Cochrane collection from any computer in the country. The Canadian Health Libraries Association reports that almost 40,000 Canadians were denied access to a Cochrane systematic review in 2007.

  • One of the neat features of the Sony Reader is that you can “borrow” electronic books from participating libraries, including ones in New York, Chicago and my public library in Seattle. So I went to digital media page on its Web site and searched for Eclipse. It turns out that six of the library’s eight copies of the book in Adobe’s eBook format, which works with Sony’s eBook devices, were available to borrow for 21 days. I typed in my library card number and PIN, clicked download, and a few seconds later, the book was on my PC. Then, I connected the Sony Reader via the USB port and the book zipped over to my device.

    The Financial Post reports that PushLife is helping RIM level the playing field between it and the iPhone. They're now collaborating with a former RIM employee -- now an entrepreneur and MaRS client, Raymond Reddy of PushLife. The application allows customers to sync their existing music libraries on their PCs or Macs with new tunes purchased from mobile music venues without having to install a software program that replaces their existing media players such as iTunes.

    From Booklist: Joachimsthaler offers another book that promotes use of reinvented basic marketing principles to assist highly innovative companies. The author describes his DIG model (Demand-First Innovation & Growth), which consists of three interlinked parts: explore the demand for their products and services through an in-depth understanding of how people behave and live their lives and how they consume; apply an innovative routine of structured thinking to identify opportunities that customers cannot articulate; and formulate a strategy for effectively pursuing new opportunities. We learn that although most companies conduct some type of market research, they may fail to look for real opportunities and quantify them or fail to develop viable action plans that lead to results. This model illustrates how to become an unbiased observer of people's consumption and usage behaviors and offers a new approach to identifying and executing a company's growth strategy. Joachimsthaler, a consultant, reports that "successful opportunities for innovation and growth are right here, in front of us, and we often can't see them or don't act on them."   • This technique especially helps novice users quickly grasp how your application works. Folders are a classic software metaphor. People file things in folders in the real world, so they immediately understand the idea of putting data into folders on a computer.
  • iPhone OS users enjoy a heightened sense of direct manipulation because of the Multi-Touch interface. Using gestures, people feel a greater affinity for, and sense of control over, the objects they see on screen, because they do not use any intermediate device (such as a mouse) to manipulate them.
  • An iPhone application is better than a person at remembering lists of options, commands, data, and so on. Take advantage of this by presenting choices or options in list form, so users can easily scan them and make a choice. Keeping text input to a minimum frees users from having to spend a lot of time typing and frees your application from having to perform a lot of error checking. Presenting choices to the user, instead of asking for more open-ended input, also allows them to concentrate on accomplishing tasks with your application, instead of remembering how to operate it.
