Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce - 0 views

  •
"Welcome to Bedford, Virginia, one of the fastest growing areas in the state. A good mix of industry, commerce and agriculture ensures a strong, diversified economy and a positive business climate. Bedford's political atmosphere is stable, the tax rates favorable, the school system excellent, and the quality of life outstanding. Strategically located between the metropolitan areas of Lynchburg and Roanoke, Bedford is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. A good labor environment exists, providing availability at reasonable costs, and a strong work ethic results in high productivity and low turnover. The Bedford area abounds with natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities offering residents and visitors a pleasant environment to live, work, and play."

Best Careers 2009: Librarian - US News and World Report - 0 views

  •
"Forget about that image of librarians as a mousy bookworms. More and more of today's librarians must be clever interrogators, helping the patron to reframe their question more usefully. Librarians then become high-tech information sleuths, helping patrons plumb the oceans of information available in books and digital records, often starting with a clever Google search but frequently going well beyond. Click here to find out more! Librarianship is an underrated career. Most librarians love helping patrons solve their problems and, in the process, learning new things. Librarians may also go on shopping sprees, deciding which books and online resources to buy. They may even get to put on performances, like children's puppet shows, and run other programs, like book discussion groups for elders. On top of it all, librarians' work environment is usually pleasant and the work hours reasonable, although you may have to work nights and/or weekends The job market for special librarians (see below) is good but is sluggish for public and school librarians. Nevertheless, persistent sleuthing-that key attribute of librarians-should enable good candidates to prevail. That effort to land a job will be well worth it if you're well suited to the profession: love the idea of helping people dig up information, are committed to being objective-helping people gain multiple perspectives on issues-and will remain inspired by the awareness that librarians are among our society's most empowering people."

Earth Day on Your Block- A Guide for Kids, pg 1 - 0 views

  •
"CELEBRATE THE ENVIRONMENT Because parties are fun, they are an easy way to learn things. People feel better after sharing a good time together. They talk and get new ideas to help the Earth. Then they have a good reason to act on what they have learned. Just as the Fourth of July reminds us to love our country, Earth Day reminds us to love and care for the Earth and our fellow creatures. huglobe If every neighborhood lived in harmony with nature, most of our environmental problems would be gone. All the News that's Fit to Tap and Swipe: Comparing news apps Flipboard, Pulse, Zite, a... - 0 views

  • Final verdict Each of these news aggregation apps has pluses and minuses; individual needs play a role in determining which is best for you. Ask yourself: Are you looking for a straightforward, visual RSS reader experience? If so, Google Currents and Pulse are the best options, with Pulse having more flexibility than Currents. What level of learning curve can you stand? If you’re ready to spend a bit of time on learning how to use the app, Zite and Flipboard are good options. How important are social features? Along with being able to share a story via Twitter or Facebook, do you want to be able to comment on a story from within the app? If so, Flipboard is a good choice. Is your interest mostly in keeping up with news followed by those you connect with on social sites? Then Flipboard or Pulse make the most sense. Will recommendations of stories that you might not find on your own be useful? The app for that is Zite.

Veengle - 0 views

Veengle could be a good way for students to create mini documentary film. My initial thought is that students in a history class to could create a "video timeline" of sorts by creating a compilation video that includes segments about important events within a particular era. For example, I might ask US History students to create a chronological compilation of videos about Civil War battles. This post originally appeared on Free Technology for Teachers.

Science - Video Portal - 0 views

  •
Unfortunately, the videos in Science Magazine's Video Portal don't have embed codes for placing them in your blog or website so you will have to just link to them. The nice thing about the videos is that each of them is connected to a print article that your students can read. The videos could be a good support material to have students view after an initial reading of the connected print article. This post originally appeared on Free Technology for Teachers.

GUYS READ - 0 views

  •
"Welcome to Guys Read, a web-based literacy program for boys. Our mission is to help boys become self-motivated, lifelong readers. Research shows that boys are having trouble reading, and that boys are getting worse at reading. No one is quite sure why. Some of the reasons are biological. Some of the reasons are sociological. But the good news is that research also shows that boys will read - if they are given reading that interests them. So the biggest part of this site is the collection of book titles below. These are books that guys have told us they like. Our idea is to help guys become readers by helping them find texts they want to read. Get in there and start looking around. There is a little something for everyone. And please help guys out by recommending more of your guy-favorites."

Target Heart Rate Calculator : Discovery Health - 0 views

  •
"Use Discovery Health's free target heart rate calculator to find out what your target heart rate is. Simply put in your gender, intensity level and age, and let Discovery Health's free target heart rate calculator work for you. Your Target Heart Rate, from 60 to 80 percent of the maximum your heart can beat, should be your goal three to five times a week for 20 to 60 minutes (excluding warm-ups) to maximize the health benefits of cardiovascular activity, including losing weight. People who exercise regularly do build up endurance, but they gain little additional value when their heart rate goes above 80 percent of their maximum. Besides the strain and injuries that can result, the heart is simply working too fast for any benefit, and your body cannot replenish oxygen that quickly. Similarly, regular exercise below the 60 percent mark has little sustainable impact - though for beginners, it's a good place to "

USDA - CNPP - MyPyramid Tracker - 0 views

" MyPyramid Tracker is an online dietary and physical activity assessment tool that provides information on your diet quality, physical activity status, related nutrition messages, and links to nutrient and physical activity information. The Food Calories/Energy Balance feature automatically calculates your energy balance by subtracting the energy you expend from physical activity from your food calories/energy intake. Use of this tool helps you better understand your energy balance status and enhances the link between good nutrition and regular physical activity. Keep track of your energy balance history and view it up to one year. MyPyramid Tracker translates the principles of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and other nutrition standards developed by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services. Click here for a NEW tutorial on MyPyramid Tracker. According to the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, no persons are required to respond to a collection of information unless it displays a valid OMB control number. The valid OMB control number for this information collection is 0584-0535 (expiration date: June 30, 2009). The time required to complete this information collection is estimated to average 31.5 minutes per response, including the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing data sources, gathering and maintaining the data needed, and completing and reviewing the collection of information. ALA | YALSA's Book Awards and Booklists - 0 views

  •
"Looking for great teen books? Look no further than YALSA's Book Awards and Selected Booklists. YALSA's six literary awards honor the best books for teens each year with its Alex, Edwards, Morris, Nonfiction, Odyssey, and Printz awards. In addition, YALSA publishes selected booklists each year, which offer recommended titles for both the avid and reluctant teen reader. Both the awards and booklists highlight great books for teens. Parents and caregiverss can use these lists to find good books for their teens and librarians and educators may find them useful for collection development. While these books have been selected for teens from 12 to 18 years of age, the award-winning titles and the titles on YALSA's selected lists span a broad range of reading and maturity levels. We encourage adults to take an active role in helping individual teens choose those books that are the best fit for them and their families. Want to link to this page? "We've already learned that the main difference between drawing and sculpture is one of dimension. While you can draw a picture so that objects appear to look three-dimensional, the surface on which you work is flat. Sculpture, however, has depth as well as length and width. The two kinds of sculpture are relief and in the round. Details project or stick out from a background in a relief sculpture, so they can be seen only from the front and sides. Figures on architecture, such as those found on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, are good examples of this type. An in the round sculpture is free-standing, however, so it can be viewed from all sides. Henry Moore's Large Arch, which is located here in Columbus, is an example of an in the round sculpture."
