ALA | YALSA's Book Awards and Booklists - 0 views

  •
"Looking for great teen books? Look no further than YALSA's Book Awards and Selected Booklists. YALSA's six literary awards honor the best books for teens each year with its Alex, Edwards, Morris, Nonfiction, Odyssey, and Printz awards. In addition, YALSA publishes selected booklists each year, which offer recommended titles for both the avid and reluctant teen reader. Both the awards and booklists highlight great books for teens. Parents and caregiverss can use these lists to find good books for their teens and librarians and educators may find them useful for collection development. While these books have been selected for teens from 12 to 18 years of age, the award-winning titles and the titles on YALSA's selected lists span a broad range of reading and maturity levels. We encourage adults to take an active role in helping individual teens choose those books that are the best fit for them and their families. Want to link to this page? "Communication scholars need access to copyrighted material, need to make unlicensed uses of them in order to do their research, and often-especially within the United States-have the legal right to do so. But all too often they find themselves thwarted. Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for OpenCourseWare This document is a code of best practices designed to help those preparing OpenCourseWare (OCW) to interpret and apply fair use under United States copyright law."

Best Careers 2009: Librarian - US News and World Report - 0 views

  •
"Forget about that image of librarians as a mousy bookworms. More and more of today's librarians must be clever interrogators, helping the patron to reframe their question more usefully. Librarians then become high-tech information sleuths, helping patrons plumb the oceans of information available in books and digital records, often starting with a clever Google search but frequently going well beyond. Click here to find out more! Librarianship is an underrated career. Most librarians love helping patrons solve their problems and, in the process, learning new things. Librarians may also go on shopping sprees, deciding which books and online resources to buy. They may even get to put on performances, like children's puppet shows, and run other programs, like book discussion groups for elders. On top of it all, librarians' work environment is usually pleasant and the work hours reasonable, although you may have to work nights and/or weekends The job market for special librarians (see below) is good but is sluggish for public and school librarians. Nevertheless, persistent sleuthing-that key attribute of librarians-should enable good candidates to prevail. That effort to land a job will be well worth it if you're well suited to the profession: love the idea of helping people dig up information, are committed to being objective-helping people gain multiple perspectives on issues-and will remain inspired by the awareness that librarians are among our society's most empowering people."

All the News that's Fit to Tap and Swipe: Comparing news apps Flipboard, Pulse, Zite, a... - 0 views

  • Final verdict Each of these news aggregation apps has pluses and minuses; individual needs play a role in determining which is best for you. Ask yourself: Are you looking for a straightforward, visual RSS reader experience? If so, Google Currents and Pulse are the best options, with Pulse having more flexibility than Currents. What level of learning curve can you stand? If you’re ready to spend a bit of time on learning how to use the app, Zite and Flipboard are good options. How important are social features? Along with being able to share a story via Twitter or Facebook, do you want to be able to comment on a story from within the app? If so, Flipboard is a good choice. Is your interest mostly in keeping up with news followed by those you connect with on social sites? Then Flipboard or Pulse make the most sense. Will recommendations of stories that you might not find on your own be useful? The app for that is Zite.

Behold | Search High Quality Flickr Images - 0 views

  •
Behold is a search engine that is designed to help you find the best Creative Commons licensed images for your blog, slideshow, or video project. Behold searches the catalog of more than one million Creative Commons licensed images on Flickr. What makes Behold different from just searching by using the license filter on Flickr itself is that Behold searches not just by image tag but also by the quality of the content of the images. When it works correctly if you used Behold to search for images of "buildings in New York City" you would not only be searching the tags people assigned to their images, but you would also be searching the actual content of the images.
