    A learner-centred school in Turkey? I really wonder how these students will perform at university entrance exam. Pass or fail? I am really curious about the results.

    I cjecked the socie-economic status of the families. Families seem to be high in terms of socie-economic status. This made me think that the students will not worry about university enterance exams, since they will have some opportunity to enter some private ones.

    I think this is certainly a more situated-learning based school as there is no exam threat :) However, we should completely change the system, if we want to apply this schooling all over Turkey. With our system, we can't even fulfill "learning" because of the hundreds of exams. We just try to pass the exams with grade anxiety. Also, what about the socio-economically disadvantaged schools? They don't have such a luxury, I think.

    participants for building democracy, non profit organization, interdisciplinary teachers, students are decision makers, it reminded me the society centered curriculum and the ideas in conflictand the Dewey's popular saying "school is a miniature society" :)

    most probably you have heard that Summerhill School in England. It is a boarding school founded by A.S. Neill in 1921 and its basic principle is the school should be made to fit the child, rather than the child should be made to fit the school.     There is this point that I totally agree with Burcu about disadvantaged groups. Also whenever I think about examples like Sudbury Valley, I get impressed by the idea of getting rid of exam threat. But for our country, we have to change like everything, the belief systems, the culture, the attitudes. We have a lot do to in that respect, even if our main intention to make just a small change.

An instructional design framework for authentic learning environments - 1 views

    This is the article which defines critical characteristics of situated learning enviroment. The authors used a lot of literature in the analysis part of the study. The purpose of this study was firstly, to identify critical characteristics of a situated learning environment from the extensive literature base on the subject; secondly, to operationalise the critical characteristics of a situated learning environment by designing a multimedia program which incorporated the identified characteristics; and thirdly, to investigate students' perceptions of their experiences using an multimedia package based on a situated learning framework. I think it will helpful us while we are searching for more articles on situated learning, because it has an extensive reference list.

    I remember many years ago I read a science fiction book about a game which was created to select the President. (Spoiler - The winner of the game was a 13 old year boy:)) Actually games are very interesting and will be very useful for education but the main problem here is the nature of market and the cost. Last week I was reading an article about mobile learning, I think this quote is meaningful for games too "In any case, hardware devices and technical systems are all without exception designed, manufactured, and marketed for corporate, retail, or recreational users. Any educational uses of the devices and the systems are necessarily parasitic and secondary." We have to consider education as "building the nation, building our future" then we can afford the cost and then educational games, devices will not be secondary...

    Yelda, honestly, I also used to question the contribution of video games to learning and nowadays, as seeing more examples like the one you shared, I guess yes perspective are changing:) I believe as we also discussed in the forum, the most critical thing is how the material, video or something else is presented to the learners and used, not the material itself.

    The same material in two differnt hands may serve to two differnt ideologies , beliefs, subject areas hence I do definitely agree with Canan the mentality of the minds who are using those plays the important role.

Applying Situated Learning in a Virtual Reality System to Enhance Learning Motivation - 1 views

    In this study, resarchers has created a virtual learning enviroment by considering situated learning theory. The results explained that VR features and perceived usefulness variables were predictors for situated learning. Moreover,the results are found to be statistically significant and indicate that situated learning helps to improve the motivation to learn.

    SJTs have long history of being used for measuring situated cognition; they have been used from 1920's(McDaniel, et. al., 2001). Although SJT has been originated from the conception of measuring dimensions, it has been viewed as a measurement method(e.g., McDaniel, et. al., 2001; Weekly & Jones, 1999) because it has been difficult to delineate the dimensions and situations. The situations represented by scenarios in SJTs are viewed as method from psychometric sense, meaning that situation effect, scenario effect, or method effect are all interchangeable.

    Zoos can be interesting and valuable places to have stiuated learning experiences. I have seen situated learning videos of Australia zoo which has programs like being a zookeper for a day or adapting an animal.

    That is such a great idea, it is like totally experiencing but I couldn't reach the website :( :( Maybe restaurants, cafes, museums can be some other locations to be used with students.
