How the brain learns to see (TED TALK) - 0 views

  •
The talk is about a research conducted by Indian Pawan Shinha. The research has been conducted on a group of 200 children. They were blind as a result of cataract. He pioneered the project which consists of treatment and post observation. He defined learning seeing step by step. He uttered that after treatment, the patient cannot differentiate the shapes; even the shadow is an object for them. The video has real data which is very interesting in my opinion.

First time I watched about these kind of programs and efectiveness in education i had some questionmarks in my mind. Because according to the documentary, it was not as effective as going to school and it was not so much fun to take an online course. That is why drop-outs of school was pretty high at that time. But this looks more effective and more suitable for learning for sure! thanks for sharing!
  •
Although online courses has some disadvantages, that platform is beyond online courses I think because it allow followers interaction instead of just slides or videos. Also I do not remember the exact details but when that platform was founded, the demand for one course was over the expected and the system was broken. Then, the same lesson began to be given as formal education and at all users who completed the course with 100 points are the ones who take the course online.
  •
Coursera was suggested me to improve my academic speaking skills by my adviser so I have a coursera account :) There are presentations, online courses, online exams and homework etc. Also, you can get a certificate that is valid international after completing the course successfully. Unfortunately, I did not benefit from it because the price of the course was too high, therefore I gave up the course.

Design-based research combined with CSCL - 1 views

  •
"This article describes how design-based research allowed the deliberate evolution of a set of tools and practices to help students collaborate effectively. The SpeakEasy, one of the earliest Web-based discussion boards, was evolved from prior discussion tools, adapted to an Internet-based science learning environment, and evolved to work with both online and offline classroom projects and practices"

A nice example of learning by design.
  •
A very good example :-)) I think this supports the idea that projects should have an aim and provide possible solutions to existing problems. As we all know, necessity is the mother of invention. So when we want to engage sts with design activities, we should be realistic and provide them with problems from real life.

What Are Learning Disabilities? - 0 views

  •
LD is frequently mistaken as laziness or associated with disorders of emotion and behavior.
  •
In my undergraduate education, I had chance to be involved in a project on the learning disability; dyslexia, problems of sounds and words. We gathered data from children in various elementary school children in Istanbul. This was a fruitful experience to learn on the topic learning disabilities.
  •
I wanted to share a topic on learning disabilities as I have encountered such students studying at the college I work for and did not know what to do with them. When I tried to involve parents to acknowledge them they preferred blaming the education system or the school itself. It must be very difficult for a parent to accept it but as teachers we need to be more knowledgeable about what to do and how to deal with it to save these learners with learning disabilities from exclusion and failure.

Learning Styles - 0 views

  •
Here is the reminder of 12 different learning styles and how they intersect with Multiple Intelligences
  •
The existence of learning styles is debatable if I am not mistaken or at least there are researchers arguing against categorizing learners according to these styles. Also there exists different categorizations for them. However it is also true that they are useful in the instruction process and teachers can make use of them if used effectively.
  •
Yeah, I think most of the learning theories to some extent depend on or connect to the said learning styles such as problem-based learning, inquiry based learning or project-based learning. We cannot separate them from our instruction methods.

Neuroscience: Implications for Education and Lifelong Learning - 0 views

  •
The report focuses on advances in neuroscience with potential implications for education and lifelong learning. The report authors, including neuroscientists, cognitive psychologists and education specialists, agree that if applied properly, the impacts of neuroscience could be highly beneficial in schools and beyond. The report argues that our growing understanding of how we learn should play a much greater role in education policy and should also feature in teacher training.
