This is the first chapter of the book "The Cambridge Handbook of the Learning Sciences" by R. Keith Sawyer. It integrates the foundations of the learning sciences, educational technology, learning processes and the emergence of the field of learning sciences along with the rationale behind this field. I think as an introduction, this chapter will be beneficial to look at before going towards the endpoints.

I would like to present and give information on Jack Mezirow who is known as the founder of the concept of transformative learning. According to his ideas, individuals transform their frames of reference through critical reflection on the assumptions upon which their interpretations, beliefs, and habits of mind or points of view are based. Personal frames of references in the learning process is underlined. He is now Emeritus Professor of Adult and Continuing Education at Teachers College, Columbia University.

It is really sad to see this unjust difference between children and the fact that the gap gets bigger. It is mentioned that later reading comprehension success is related to this difference which can influence people in a variety of situations in life such as reading a newspaper, reading the instructions of usage of a mechanic device etc.

The goal is to improve learning by motivating students and by providing a rich context for learning. It emphasizes the context and application of knowledge rather than memorizing facts (Heeter, 2005). This quotation is crucial for me because in Turkey, the education is based on memorization simply. The knowledge is "high on the clouds". We need to make it more usable and applicable.
