  •
Is it possible that a few simple words like "give," "go," "like," "you," and "stop" can change the lives of nonverbal students? Finding the answer to this question has been the work of speech-language pathologists, assistive technologists, and teachers in the Spotsylvania (Virginia) County Schools for the past four years.

How to Get Started With Speech Recognition on Windows 7 or 8 - 1 views

  •
"Did you know Windows has had Speech Recognition built-in since Windows Vista? This is more than just a way to type by speaking aloud - you can use it to control applications and navigate the desktop with your voice. It's a free, built-in alternative to paid voice dictation programs like Dragon NaturallySpeaking. It's a shame most Windows users will likely never find it buried in the Control Panel."

Littlesheep Learning: Wikki Stix Activity Ideas - 3 views

  •
Blog about Wikki Stix activity ideas. Wikki Stix are waxy sticks which look a bit like pipe-cleaners. They are made from a combination of a strand of acrylic, hand-knitting yarn and a microcrystalline, food-grade, non-toxic wax. Wikki Stix stick to smooth surfaces (like the Wikki Stick boards included in the Activity pack or onto white boards) and to each other. They are a colorful, tactile, sensory and engaging product that can be used in many different ways.

Paint Chip Crafts for the Classroom: Ideas for Teachers and Kids - 2 views

  •
Most teachers are frequently looking for classroom materials that are inexpensive. If you're interested in making some of your own materials, most likely you still don't want to spend a lot of money on them. Paint chip crafts are a great option. Not only are paint chips readily available but many teachers have already come up with great ideas for them. Most of the academic ideas here are for elementary grades, but they can be adapted for older students.

Word Wheels: Printable Worksheet - EnchantedLearning.com - 2 views

  •
These two-page print-outs make word wheels; each one consists of a base page together with a wheel that spins around (they are connected by a metal brad). When you spin the wheel, words are formed or displayed. Heavy paper (like cardstock) makes better wheels.

Teaching Special Thinkers: Autism Classroom Workbox System {TONS of pictures!} - 5 views

  •
Independent workboxes are kind of the meat of my AU classroom. During workbox time, I can observe whether my students have truly mastered skills like I think they have and it gives my students the opportunity to gain some independence with following a system/to-do list without any teacher guidance or prompting.

Animal Inquiry Through Paws, Claws, Hands, and Feet | Big Universe Learning - Blog - 1 views

  •
Paws, Claws, Hands, and Feet by Kimberly Hutmacher is a rhythmic rhyming book about animals and how they use their appendages. A book like this is especially helpful for exposing children to a variety of verbs that they may not ordinarily use. When asked to describe what feet can do, many of my lower elementary students would say: walk, run, stand, hop, or jump. After reading this book, they discover that feet can also: cling, leap, dash, roam, etc.

Engaging Students through Gesture-Based Learning - 1 views

  •
Monica Kissel and Adina Popa from Loudoun County Public Schools, both Innovative Educators of the Year, will discuss kinesthetic learning. Sponsored by the Innovations Committee. How do we engage our 21st Century students? How do we help them understand that the material covered in class is relevant to their lives? In his book "Motivating Students to Learn," Jere Brophy suggests that students learn best when they are actively engaged with the content. Through kinesthetic learning, they develop lasting skills that many times translate into higher levels of student achievement. But how does kinesthetic learning look in a 21st Century classroom? The answer is simple: gesture-based learning. Does this initiative belong to the future? Not according to the 2011 Horizon Report which highlights Gesture-Based Computing as one of the six emerging technologies that will likely enter mainstream use within the next four to five years. The purpose of this session is to identify current technologies that employ gesture recognition, and then present innovative and replicable ways through which these technologies have been used at Steuart Weller Elementary. From turning shy students into persuasive public speakers through Avatar Kinect, to opening a world of possibilities to students with special needs though Kinect Adventures, to saving animal species with partner classrooms across the globe using multiple technologies, to exergaming, children have been immersed in a world of learning that they love. Attendees learn not only what relevant technologies are available, but also how to use these technologies in any curriculum area
