  • The grisly discovery of the little girl's body decomposing in a garbage bag was the last bit of evidence that Nubia Doctor's treatment at the hands of her adoptive parents was, as the prosecutor said today, "subhuman."
    • Seth Fahringer

They didn't know she wsa being abused? What happened to all the preventatives? Who was subhuman? Did they call her that?
  • Arrests warrants and a news conference today detailed a short and brutal life endured by Nubia and her twin brother Victor.
    • Seth Fahringer

How old was she? What did they do to her? Is her brother still alive?
  • Jorge Barahona, 53, is accused of punching his daughter to death on Feb 11 following a lengthy torture session in which the girl was kept bound at the hands and feet and left in a bathtub. Carmen Barahona, 60, is also charged with first degree murder.
    • Seth Fahringer

Punched to death? Like beaten to death or one deadly blow? Was being in the bathtub the torture or was the torture something worse?
  • ...8 more annotations...
  • the 10-year-old twins were subjected to months of abuse culminating in a torture session that ended with the girl's death just one day after state child welfare authorities visited the home and found no reason to intervene.
    • Seth Fahringer

How couldn't they feel the need to intervene? There had to be marks on her somewhere! She had to have been acting funny. Children who aren't abused act way differently from children who are.
  • Co-defendant [Jorge Barahona] reportedly punched and beat Nubia about her body while she screamed and cried until she was dead,"
    • Seth Fahringer

That's horrible... How could someone listen to a little girl scream and not feel terrible? He is a sick person.
  • "repeatedly hit, punched, beaten with multiple objects about their bodies and bound and left for days on end, locked inside the only bathroom in the family home..."
    • Seth Fahringer

Seriously? And nobody thought they should take these kids away? Didn't the Barahona's shower? Or use the bathroom. Did they feed the kids or give them water?
  • "depressing [and] sickening" and described the ordeal suffered by Nubia and her twin brother Victor as "very organized abuse."
    • Seth Fahringer

It is way more then "depressing [and] sickening" It is so much more. They are sick horible people.
  • "I don't know how people justify this in their minds… this is subhuman,"
    • Seth Fahringer

What does he mean subhuman? Like no human behavior?
  • "the methodical, systemic, constant torture imposed on these two beautiful children."
    • Seth Fahringer

Can they be charged with premeditated? I think they should be. I think they should both get the lethal injection.
  • Barahona was initially arrested Feb. 14 after Nubia's remains were found covered in chemicals and decomposing in a bag in the back of his truck. Police found Barahona and Victor parked along a highway outside West Palm Beach, Fla. The boy, overcome by fumes and convulsing, was covered in chemical burns.
    • Seth Fahringer

What was this chemical? Was it the same one on both the boy and the girl? This boy will be extremely messed up when he grows up. I feel so bad for him. He has had a tortured life and he is only 10 years old.
  • Barahona was originally charged with aggravated child abuse and the attempted murder of Victor, but it was not until this weekend that the couple were charged with first degree murder for the death of Nubia.
    • Seth Fahringer

They should just start sentencing. They are obviously guilty. How did they justify this to themselves? Seriously... How?

    • Kendra Yinger

If they have been trying to commit robberies together then why hasnt anybody called the police when they were doing that? that could have stop the church from being robbed and having the pastor killed.
  • Nelson, who was arrested Saturday, has previous convictions that include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, theft and burglary,
    • Kendra Yinger

this guy is very dangerous and should deffenitly get the dealth pentalty. He has had his fair share of warnings and now he just went over the line by doing what he did.

    • Kendra Yinger

Did they use a plastic bag because they had nothing else to use? Were they not excepting the pastor to be there?
  • Tips from the public were invaluable and led to the break in the case,
    • Kendra Yinger

      What were the tips?
  • Nelson gave him an item that belonged to the pastor and also said he robbed the church and suffocated Dobson, according to the documents.

Obama signs short-term spending bill, averting federal shutdown - 0 views

  • President Obama on Wednesday signed a stopgap measure that will keep the federal government funded through March 18
    • Rob High

What is a stopgap measure? Does it allow the federal government to continue even though it doesn't have any funds.
  • The resolution, which passed the Senate earlier Wednesday 91 to 9, will cut $4 billion in spending by targeting programs that Obama has already marked for elimination and reductions.
    • Rob High

four billion still sounds like too small an amount for our current debt. I think they should quickly get this worked out and focus on reducing our debt and spend more time compromising on that.

It is either 700,000 job or a whole country that cripples under its own debt. Got to start making decisions somewhere and deal with the consequences come. If you analyze every single point and problem things won't get anywhere. You could argue pros and cons all day while the debt just gets bigger or you could try something different and change something to try and make a real difference.

7 Mennonite children killed in Blain, Pennsylvania fire - 0 views

  • Seven Mennonite children were killed in a tragic fire that ripped through a Pennsylvania farmhouse while their mother was away milking cows and their father napped nearby,
    • destiny basnight

Did their parents not notice that there was a fire?
  • A 3-year-old girl survived the blaze in rural Blain, Pa., near Harrisburg.
    • destiny basnight

How did she survive being so young?
  • She then ran to her neighbors and frantically asked them to call 911.
    • destiny basnight

Why didnt she go in and look for her kids. I feel that she should have gotten her husband, one of them could of went to the neighbor and the other to look for their kids.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • The woman then found her husband sleeping in the truck and they rushed back to the house, which was by that time fully engulfed in flames.
    • destiny basnight

If she already wasted time going to the neighbors why isn't she going into her house. I feel as though she was not trying really hard to get her kids out of the fire because she wasted so much time before going into the house to look for her kids, and maybe more of them could have been saved. She should have put in extra effort because many of them were young.
  • Officials said the children died of smoke inhalation. the cause of the blaze was not immediately known
    • destiny basnight

Do they know what caused the fire now?
  • .Pennsylvania State Police said the family's patriarch had left the home late Tuesday evening to prepare the dairy farm's delivery truck.
    • destiny basnight

If he was supposed to be out doing this then why was he sleeping in the truck. I think this all could have been prevented if the parents were more responsible. It may not be their fault, they could have helped prevented this or at least helped save some of their children.

Lawmakers: Illinois to abolish death penalty - U.S. news - msnbc.com - 0 views

  • Gov. Pat Quinn intends to abolish the death penalty in Illinois, two sponsors of the legislation said Tuesday.
    • Michelle Perritt

I agree with the death penalty, so I don't think that it should be taken away. If there is no penalty worse than life in jail I belive that people won't take doing crimes as seriously as they do since we do have the death penalty.
  • Quinn's office declined to comment Tuesday about his intentions. He has said he personally supports the death penalty when properly implemented and would make a decision on the bill based on his conscience.
    • Michelle Perritt

I think that he should really reconsider taking the death oenalty away completely. To me it is neither cruel or unusual. If you killed a bunch of people than you deserve to die too. The way that they persue capital punishment doesn't even hurt the person.
  • "I've heard from many, many people of good faith and good conscience on both sides of the issue. And I've tried to be very meticulous and writing down notes and studying those notes and books and e-mails. They've really spoken from the heart. I've been very proud of the people of Illinois," Quinn said recently.
    • Michelle Perritt

I don't think that he listened to both sides of the arguments if he is just getting rid of it anyways. Maybe instead of getting rid of it he shoulf just compromise and make it harder for people to give the death penalty but still have it in place.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Quinn were to sign the bill, it is unclear what he'd do about the 15 inmates currently on Illinois' death row.
    • Michelle Perritt

I think its strange that they hold people on death row for so long. It doesn't take long to kill someone from using the death penalty but yet we waste spaces in prisions all over with the people just waiting on death row. They should just get it over with already.
  • Prosecutors would still be able to seek the death penalty and juries could still impose it until the law took effect.
    • Michelle Perritt

What would be the point of that? If they are just going to get rid of it anyways then they will probably just put all the people from death row in jail for life. No need to go threw all of the trouble if there just going to put the person in jail for life anyways.

  • The children -- ages 7 months to 11 years
    • Samantha Montalvo

They were so young and helpless.
  • "While mom's milking cows, her 3-year-old daughter comes running into the barn and the 3-year-old tells the mother that there's smoke inside the house," Pinkerton said. "Mom leaves the barn, comes running out, sees that the house appears to be on fire."
    • Samantha Montalvo

That's crazy how a 3 year old was smart enough to know there was something wrong and went and told her mother, unfortuneately the child didn't inform the others children in the house first.
  • The children -- six girls and a boy -- were found dead inside the house
    • Samantha Montalvo

It's so unfortuante that so many children died, but luckily one survived.

Inmate Wants To Donate Organs After Execution - Portland News Story - KPTV Portland - 0 views

  • Inmate Wants To Donate Organs After Execution
    • Steph Starr

This situation is practically similar to Jodi Picoult's book, "Change of Heart". In this book, a man sentenced to death wishes to donate his heart to the victim's family. **spoiler alert** He appeals so that he can choose his execution method; he chooses to be hanged and doctors were on the scene to immediately remove his heart.
  • Do people suspect Longo might be making the gesture for publicity?
    • Steph Starr

Even if this were for publicity, what would he gain by it? He's going to die anyway. Perhaps people think he is trying to buy his 15 minutes of fame. I think he should be able to donate his organs.
  • must die by a lethal injection of three drugs

Is there a particular reason why they must die by lethal injection? Why aren't they given a choice? If they were, Longo could choose to be hanged.

    • Steph Starr

What was the outcome? The article doesn't say, but I assume it wasn't good for Longo? Who would he appeal to next?
  • executions take place in prison, not in a hospital, where a donor’s organs are normally harvested
    • Steph Starr

It seems that the two main obstacles Longo needs to overcome is the way to die (lethal injection vs. hanging), and where the execution should take place (prison vs. hospital). It seems that both of these problems could be overcome. The main problem that occured in Picoult's "Change of Heart", was the extra cost to the state it would take to make these exceptions. I wonder if the same issue would apply here too.

Pennsylvania Man Faces Murder Charges in Death of Parents, Twin Brother - FoxNews.com - 0 views

  • Authorities say Joseph McAndrew Jr. stabbed his family to death in a bloody rampage Saturday inside their Montgomery County home.
    • Adam Mazurek

This is just awful. There had to be something mentally wrong with this guy. Why would anyone even want to kill their own family?
  • Authorities are not yet clear on a motive.
    • Adam Mazurek

I wonder why. Did the man not talk at all to the police? How are the police going to try and figure out his motive?
  • Investigators also found several knives and a Samurai-style sword, according to the station.
    • Adam Mazurek

I wonder where they found these weapons. Did the man's family know that he had these weapons? Why did the man have these weapons?
  •
In Pennsylvania, a man went on a rampage in his home stabbing and killing both his parents and twin brother. The police have no idea why the man killed his family. The man is facing first degree murder charges.

East Coast Rapist suspect charged in series of attacks - 0 views

  • Law enforcement officials say DNA from a discarded cigarette butt has linked Aaron H. Thomas, 39, to a series of rapes and other attacks on women spanning 13 years and four states, including Maryland and Virginia.
    • Robyn Allen

All it took was a cigarette butt to find him? That's ridiculous that he wasn't found sooner! 13 women were hurt before anyone could stop him?! Sometimes you just don't feel safe being yourself anymore. How am I supposed to feel knowing that there is a rapist who got to 13 women before he was caught? Two of them were teenage girls on Halloween...
  • Authorities announced Saturday that Thomas has been charged with sex assault, burglary and risk of injury to a minor in connection with a January 2007 attack on a New Haven, Conn., woman that occurred in her apartment as her infant son slept in a crib nearby.
    • Robyn Allen

What about under age? What about just being a creep. I think that should be against the law...
  • Thomas, who is being held on a $1 million bond, also is charged with two counts of rape, abduction and a firearm count in connection with a Halloween 2009 attack of three teenage girls in Prince William County, law enforcement officials said.
    • Robyn Allen

I just feel like he isn't being punished enough.
  • ...11 more annotations...
  • A law enforcement source familiar with the investigation said on Saturday that Thomas had been "very cooperative" and talked with detectives from Maryland and Virginia who traveled to New Haven on Friday.
    • Robyn Allen

It is because he is a psyciopath. It doesn't say he showed remorse or anything. This guy really just gets under my skin. Just men like him are just horrible people. I can't stand it.
  • At some point, however, he attempted suicide by hanging, said Officer Joe Avery, a New Haven police spokesman. Avery said Thomas was sent to a hospital for observation after the incident, then returned to the facility where he was being held.
    • Robyn Allen

It's is his way of telling everyone he did it. Honestly if people try to do this why don't they just let them. He doesn't want to be here anymore. That sounds horrible but I mean to a religious person the greatest judgement is from God. I just think that world would be better off without people like him.
  • "although the information and investigation of Thomas developed quickly over the last week or so . . . investigators worked tirelessly for years pursuing this case." Johnson said she hoped the arrest "brings some closure to our victims."
    • Robyn Allen

It developed quickly but it took them years?! Are you serious? Why does it take so long for court cases and stuff? What happened to a quick and speedy trial? Are criminal cases different in anyway?
  • A Cranston, R.I., woman whose daughter saw the rapist poke his head through the partially open sliding glass door of their deck in November 2006, said she was relieved. Her daughter's screams chased the man but she had wondered where he was and whether he would return.
    • Robyn Allen

That would have been the scariest moment of my life. My mom is paranoid about keeping my house locked up tight. If that happened she would probably replace all the locks, get more locks, and move me to a different bedroom. That would seriously just freak me out if someone did that...
  • "You never knew," she said. "Now he's not able to rape or assault anyone else."
    • Robyn Allen

She is so calm... If that happened to me I wouldn't even be aloud home alone anymore. At least he isn't able to hurt anyone else but I mean, in the movie Law Abiding Citizen he was in jail and murdering people at the same time. You can never be too sure of yourself. Always be cautious.
  • Police had sponsored a media blitz, with composite sketches of the attacker on digital billboards along the East Coast and a Web site on the case.
    • Robyn Allen

Composite sketches look like everyone. There is no way to tell for sure if it is one person. I hate those things. They are totally unreliable.
  • Thomas was on a short list of suspects culled from hundreds. Police tracked him down at an unrelated court appearance Thursday in New Haven, where they recovered the cigarette butt.
    • Robyn Allen

It would really suck to be on trial for something minor and then get caught for this. It is a day ruiner I bet. But he deserves his punishment and everything else that happens to him.
  • Messages left Saturday at phone numbers listed for his relatives were not returned.
    • Robyn Allen

Sounds like a whole family of winners.
  • Thomas attended a Prince George's County high school and often visited his mother in Clarke County, Va., according to law enforcement officials.
    • Robyn Allen

What does this have to do with anything? Did he start raping women in high school?
  • An address listed for him in Prince William was two miles from the Halloween 2009 rape of two teenagers; his current address in New Haven is seven miles from the rape there.
    • Robyn Allen

Isn't that statutory? Or is statutory consentual sex with a minor? ANd how is it conesntual if you can't consent until the age of 16 in the state of PA?
  • Police have long said the person responsible for the rapes likely lived or worked near where they occurred. Thomas's address history places him close to almost all of the rapes linked by DNA.

Robert Kennedy assassin Sirhan denied parole | Reuters - 0 views

  • Sirhan, 66, will be eligible for another parole review in five years, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.
    • Seth Fahringer

What kind of 71 year old wants to be in prison? He has obviously learned his lesson. He is old, nobody knows him outside anymore. If they really wanted to punish him they should have just let him free.
  • His lawyer, William Pepper, said that Sirhan was innocent of the assassination and has been treated unfairly.
    • Seth Fahringer

Don't all lawyers have to say that? Sirhan said that he did it in his original trial. Why should it matter now?
  • From what we've seen this afternoon, we're very disappointed and we're very hurt for a man whose been spending time confined when he met every one of the criteria for suitability to be released," Pepper said.
    • Seth Fahringer

If he really did meet every one of the criteria to be eligible for parole they should have let him out. If it was a regular Joe the plumber that was killed he would have gotten parole within 20 years of his crime.
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • "They ignored everything we had to say and went on the emotional kick of losing a presidential candidate and loss of a national leader," he said
    • Seth Fahringer

That's not fair. I admit we lost a great leader to this man however he did his time. Saying that someone has life in prison means they are eligible to get parole 20 years after their crime. He has been in for 43!
  • Sirhan, who moved to the United States with his family as a child, was initially sentenced to death for the assassination of the senator, brother to slain President John F. Kennedy.
    • Seth Fahringer

I do not understand why this paragraph is in here... Why does it matter?
  • It was Sirhan's 14th appearance before a parole board, but it was the 13th time that he was eligible for release on parole and was denied, said Doug Roberts, a spokesman for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
    • Seth Fahringer

Was he eligible every 5 years? Why wouldn't they pass him if he had been a model prisoner?
  • At a 2003 hearing where he was also denied parole, a state Board of Prison Terms panel found Sirhan's anger and ability to cope had worsened, and that he would pose a risk to society if released. He was denied parole again in 2006.
    • Seth Fahringer

I don't understand. First they say he's a model prisoner and has had great improvement and behavior and now they say this. Which one is it really?
  • Pepper, has suggested that Sirhan was brainwashed to target Kennedy, telling ABC News in an interview earlier this week: "There is no question he was hypno-programed."
    • Seth Fahringer

Maybe if his lawyer would stop acting like he was crazy he would get out. Why would anyone let someone out of prison who thinks he was hypnotized?
  • At his trial, Sirhan declared that he killed Kennedy "with 20 years of malice aforethought."
    • Seth Fahringer

What kind of little kid thinks about killing a president? if this is true he started planning his killing when he was 3 years old. No 3 year old thinks about anything that complex.
  • The Palestinian-born Sirhan's motive was said to have been anger about U.S. policy in the Middle East.
    • Seth Fahringer

This sentenced should be moved. It is a poorly written article on a very contravercial subject. However I think that Sirhan should be granted parole.

    • Kendra Yinger

Robert Kennedy's Killer Sirhan Sirhan Says He Was Brainwashed - ABC News - 0 views

  • A lawyer for Sirhan Sirhan, the confessed assassin of Robert F. Kennedy, plans to present new evidence at a parole board hearing suggesting that he did not act alone, was potentially brain washed and cannot remember anything about the 43-year-old shooting.
    • Davonta Covington

Truthly I think if it was 43 years ago and you cannot find the person that actually committed the crime with him, then why bring it up now? Its 43 years ago and the man does not remember actually who the other person was, what is the reason to find out now after 43 years? I just think its pointless that you try 43 years later then rather trying to find out when it actually happened.
  • There is no question he was hypno-programmed," lawyer William F. Pepper told ABCNews.com. "He was set up. He was used. He was manipulated."
    • Davonta Covington

Facts still remain the same. He committed a crime and assassinated the president of the U.S. I think if he was manipulated in doing the crime that shouldn't change anything as far as committing a murder to the president of the U.S.

  • Pepper said he believes Sirhan was "hypno-programmed," essentially brainwashed to kill Kennedy and his memories were then erased.

Once again I dont think he should be given a chance to actually get another trial to say he was brain washed into killing Mr.Kennedy. For all we could possibly know, he could have been sitting in jail thinking of a way to get himself off because he is tired of being in there. People are crazy these days and will say or do anything to get out of something. I just think its absolutely crazy that it takes him 43 years to come out and say it was someone else that was with him but not only he says he was brain washed into committing the crime. I DONT BELIEVE HIM

More charges in deadly day care fire | Houston & Texas News | Chron.com - Houston Chron... - 0 views

  • A day care operator charged in a fire last week that claimed the lives of four children faces nine new charges
    • Purnima Malik

This sounds extremely strange. A day care "operator" decided to open fire. What was going on in this guy's head?
  • fled the country Saturday and is in Nigeria.
    • Purnima Malik

It still doesn't make any sense...why did she do what she did? And how was she able to fly out of the country so soon. Is she off the hook?
  • will include six for reckless injury to a child and three charges of child endangerment. Her previous charge filed Sunday stands.
    • Purnima Malik

She apparently as a record on endangering kids, was she allowed to be the day care operator? I think the victim's parents should sue her and the daycare center for letting her work there.
    • Purnima Malik

Or are all these charges for the shooting. I would say a gun less world would be better, but then the weapon would just be something else. I wonder how Tata treated the kids and how the kids treated her prior to the shooting. How was there relationship.
