Casey Anthony murder trial begins in Fla. - Crimesider - CBS News - 1 views

  • her mother Casey now prepares to stand trial for her own life in connection with Caylee's murder.
    • destiny basnight

What led them to believe that she has anything to do with the crime?
  • But while the trial itself will be held in Orlando, where the crime allegedly took place, jury selection is being held more than a hundred miles away in Clearwater, Fla.
    • destiny basnight

Why is it still going to be where the crime took place?
  • The court hopes by picking jurors from outside Orlando and not publicizing ahead of time where those jurors will come from, they'll have a better shot at giving Casey Anthony a fair trial, a task everyone involved in the case realizes will be one of the biggest hurdles for the defense.
    • destiny basnight

Sometimes it seems as though moving the trial a couple of miles away does not help the defense because people usually think the same about most things no matter where they are.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • That's because attention surrounding the case has been unrelenting since Caylee was first reported missing in July 2008.
    • destiny basnight

Why is it becoming a big deal now?
  • Caylee, an adorable two-year-old, had been missing more than a month before her disappearance was even reported.
    • destiny basnight

Even if the mother had something to do with it why didnt the father report his child as missing?
  • By the time little Caylee's body was discovered in December less than a mile from the Anthony home, the local community had already made up their minds about what had happened. Despite the fact that the medical examiner could not determine a cause of death, Casey had already been convicted
    • destiny basnight

What does her partying have to do with anything and why would that lead people to think she did it. If anything it would make her seem careless but maybe not a criminal.
  • Anyone selected will have to live in a hotel without internet or access to television news. They'll be able to call home to their families, but only in a common room under the supervision of a court deputy. And though they will be able to visit with their families one day a week, their conversations will be monitored to make sure nobody is discussing details of the case.
    • destiny basnight

This all seems pretty extreme for jurors.
  • This is already being hailed as the most expensive trial in Orlando history and more than 500 applications for media credentials have been submitted, pretty much guaranteeing this will be one of the biggest and most anticipated trials in recent memory.
    • destiny basnight

Why is this trial more expensive? Because it's longer?

Stranded man documented last days on calendar, police say - This Just In - CNN.com Blogs - 0 views

  • A man who was found dead in a remote mountain area in Oregon apparently was stranded there for more than 60 days by heavy snow - information gleaned from brief notes he made on a homemade calendar, authorities said.
    • destiny basnight

Did anyone know the man was there to begin with?
  • McDonald - who Mueller said was transient, estranged from his family and wasn't reported missing -
    • destiny basnight

It seems hard to believe that no one not even someone that saw his often at the grocery store would notice that he was missing.
  • He stayed there for the rest of the week, apparently to camp, with nothing noted on the calendar except his location
    • destiny basnight

It seems weird that he would plot where he went when apparently he had no friends or family to show it to so they would know about his travels and why would he show himself where he had been?
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • "He had too much snow to push out"
    • destiny basnight

Why didn't he start to drive away or home if he saw it was snowing so hard and there was a chance he would get stuck.
  • "dig o."
    • destiny basnight

      What does this mean?
  • A preliminary investigation and autopsy indicates McDonald's death was consistent with starvation and/or hypothermia, the sheriff's office said.
    • destiny basnight

Did he have any food or clothing with him?
  • He had no cell phone or GPS device. Investigators found no food or food containers, but McDonald may have burned food wrappers in a fire, Mueller said. The March 16-18 entries say "No Fo 1," "No Fo 2" and "No Fo 3," which Mueller says may indicate when McDonald ran out of food.
    • destiny basnight

It just seems as though he was very unprepared and not sure what he was doing because being alone out there I would assume he would at least have a cell phone.
  • "He had the ability, unless he had some physical impairment we didn't pick up on," Mueller said. "When the snow gets to a certain depth, it gets hard to see where the road used to be. We'll never know if he attempted it, but he never noted anything (in the calendar) that he even tried."
    • destiny basnight

He had a chance to get away and chose not to. I see no reason why he would not have at least made an attempt to get away.
  • McDonald's calendar had a couple April entries that weren't related to his predicament: "Motor vehicle registration expires" on the 12th and "can camp at Powers for 20 d." on the 18th.
    • destiny basnight

Why would he write this while he is stranded if it has nothing to do with him being stranded. I'm pretty sure he would be more worried about being stranded than his registration expiring.

Navy reverses itself on gay marriages on military bases - CNN.com - 0 views

  • The green light for gay marriage on military bases prompted a new round of Congressional opposition to ending Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
    • destiny basnight

This is a good start for people to accept gay marriage especially with the navy because they are mostly men.
  • Before the policy is changed, it must receive a final sign-off from top Pentagon officials that all services have received proper training on the new rules and procedures.
    • destiny basnight

Why does this have to be signed off?
  • Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy.
    • destiny basnight

What is the don't ask don't tell policy?

  • CNN confirmed the new memo with a Navy spokeswoman, who said the Navy will continue its overall training on how to comply with the repeal of the policy that now bans gays and lesbians from serving openly in the U.S. military.
    • destiny basnight

What led the navy to make this change when not having gay people in the armed forces used to be such a big deal?
  • "The training continues as planned," Lt. Alana Garas told CNN.
    • destiny basnight

Why would the training stop? I feel as though even though they are doing a good thing by making it such a big deal and talking about things like stopping training they're making it seem as though its a big event for people to be gay.
  • "Legal counsel determined that a more thorough review was required,

Teenager Questioned in Death of Baby - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • The police are questioning a 17-year-old in connection with the death of a baby who died on Tuesday while in his care, a law enforcement official said.
    • destiny basnight

Was the boy related to the baby or was he just watching him?
  • The 9-month-old had visible injuries to his torso, suggesting trauma, the official said
    • destiny basnight

Do they have any idea how the baby could have been hurt?
  • The baby, identified by the police as Ryan Ferrer, was unresponsive when officers found him at 11:34 a.m. in a ninth-floor apartment at the Marble Hill Houses, 69 West 225th Street.
    • destiny basnight

Was the teenage boy with the baby at the time that they found him?

  • The police responded after the 17-year-old made an emergency call requesting medical help for the baby, a second law enforcement official said.
    • destiny basnight

I feel as though if he had anything to do with the death of the baby he wouldnt of called.
  • The unidentified teenager was questioned on Tuesday afternoon at the 50th Precinct station house, the first law enforcement official said.
    • destiny basnight

How do they not know who the boy is?
  • Paulette Shomo, 69, president of the tenants’ association at the Marble Hill Houses, said police told her that Ryan’s mother needed to go to work and left him with the 17-year-old because her usual baby sitter was late.
    • destiny basnight

Then wouldnt the babysitter have shown up eventually and seen what happened.
  • Ms. Shomo said the police also told her that the teenager might have become angry at the baby for crying and punched him in the torso. “A young man was baby-sitting while waiting for the sitter to come and he hit the baby in the chest,” Ms. Shomo said. “It’s a very serious and sad thing that took place.”
    • destiny basnight

How did they come up with this random conclusion?
  • Pablo Gonzalez, 53, said the woman had lived in the apartment with her own mother until a year ago, when the older woman died of stomach cancer. “They were very tight,” he said.
    • destiny basnight

I don't understand how this is related to anything.
  • A 39-year-old neighbor, who declined to give her name, said Ryan’s mother had lived on the ninth floor of the 15-story brick public housing building for at least 15 years. She said she recently saw the woman pushing Ryan in a stroller. “I said, ‘Oh he’s so cute,’ and she smiled,” the woman recalled.

Toddler shoots mom dead, boy's father tells Florida police - CNN.com - 0 views

  • (CNN) -- A toddler shot and killed his mother, the boy's father told South Florida police, who say they will talk to the 2-1/2-year-old
    • destiny basnight

Talk to him about what? Im sure it wasn't on purpose seeing as he is two years old.
  • The father, who called 911, told police he was trying to take the firearm away from the child when it discharged
    • destiny basnight

Wouldn't it be both of their faults?
  • "What we do know is that last Wednesday, shortly after 7 o'clock, we received a 911 call from a gentleman stating that his 2-1/2-year-old son accidentally shot his mother -- the boy's mother," Rues told HLN's Vinnie Politan
    • destiny basnight

I think they should not have had the gun around him and he especially shouldnt have had it in his hand.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • Rues said investigators will talk to the toddler about the shooting, but that "due to the age, we're not expecting to get much."
    • destiny basnight

What could they possibly give him if he is only 2 years old?
  • In that roughly 4-1/2-minute call, a man's voice can be heard asking the dispatcher what to do. He speaks with a thick accent and seems overcome with emotion as he tries to explain what happened.
    • destiny basnight

I watched the video and this is true but it seemed as though he is blaming his son for the whole incident like it was not his fault at all his son had the gun and he said he was trying to remove the gun from his son but it should not have been that hard because he is 2.
  • "My son picked it up and I tried to grab it," the man said about the gun. "Oh God, I can't believe this."
    • destiny basnight

A lot of people do not believe him because during his call he also was acting god why he has put him in this spot when he is claiming that he did not do anything but try to take the gun from his son.
  • The boy's father could face charges of negligenc
    • destiny basnight

This is good not because i want them to make him out to be a bad father but how could a parent blame their child for such a thing and make it seem like it had nothing to do with him.
  • Bennett and the boy's father were not married and did not live together at the time of her death,
    • destiny basnight

Was the father upset with her? Or something like that which would influence him to do such a thing. Were they separated?

If he said he was going to kill himself and then hung up the phone why would they try to contact him again in this way, they should of just went in immediately.
  • Upon entering the residence five people were found dead upstairs. All appeared to have died from gunshot wounds.
    • destiny basnight

Did they ever discover what the "horrible accident" was or how exactly he killed them?
  • On Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 12:11 a.m., the Ottawa County Sheriffs Office received a 911 call from a person identifying himself as Alan Atwater, who stated, "There has been a terrible accident at my house, my wife and three children are dead." When asked what happened, the caller replied, "Gunshot wound."
    • destiny basnight

I find it strange that he called the police on himself pretty much and gave them his name and what had happened. Did he want people to know he killed them? or did he want help? It's strange for a grown man that killed his family and had the intention to kill himself, to call the police knowing they would show up.
  • Atwater was employed in the maintenance department at the Davis Besse Nuclear Power Station. The Sheriffs Department said he had no criminal record other than traffic violations, none of which were drug- or alcohol-related
    • destiny basnight

I wonder if he was depressed or had some sort of feelings of resentment towards his family.

Long Island Bodies May Be From More Than One Killer - ABC News - 0 views

  • The heavily thicketed ground that borders a highway along a stretch of New York beaches where as many as 10 bodies have been found is now being examined as the disposal site for a serial killer and a possible dumping ground for other killers.
    • destiny basnight

Do they think the killers could be working together?
  • More bones were found today along the Long Island beaches and have been sent to the medical examiner's office to determine whether they are from one or two people. One of the remains is just a skull.
    • destiny basnight

Do they know how the people they found have been killed?
  • Investigators have said they believe that a serial killer was responsible for the murders,
    • destiny basnight

How long have they been looking for the killer?
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • But probers now says that they cannot rule out the likelihood that more than one killer will be linked to the bodies which total seven sets of adult human remains, a toddler's remains and the bones found today that may be from one or two people.
    • destiny basnight

How do they find out who the people are if all they find left are bones?
  • According to authorities, any differences in the method of murder, disposal, burial, and any DNA evidence will be among the elements of a rigorous forensic examination.
    • destiny basnight

Where would they find DNA evidence on a beach?
  • In addition to those grisly skeletal remains found buried in the thick ground cover beside the ocean, authorities continue to search for Shannan Gilbert, a 24 year old sex worker who also advertised on Craigslist and was last seen near the beach area shouting, "He is trying to kill me."
    • destiny basnight

If people heard her yelling that why didn't anyone call for help?
  • The second set of remains, discovered over the past two weeks, were not wrapped in burlap and one was a toddler. Authorities have not said whether the toddler's remains were linked to one of the adult remains, or is unrelated.
    • destiny basnight

I wonder what the connection is between prostitutes and that toddler.
  • According to multiple sources familiar with the investigation a number of persons are under investigation in connection with the first eight corpses,
    • destiny basnight

How many total corpses are there?
  • One of the bodies found so far is that of prostitute Melissa Barthelemy. Barthelemy's teenage sister told "Good Morning America" today that she has received taunting phone calls from a man who is believed to have killed her sister.
    • destiny basnight

Do they think that he is the killer of everyone?
  • Her older sister disappeared in July 2009. Her body was found in December on Gilgo Beach in New York's Long Island area along with the bodies of three other women.
    • destiny basnight

Why did it take so long to find them and how did they find them?
  • "They were very taunting and angry words," she said. "[It was] very scary. My heart would stop and I just didn't know what to do. I'm scared of my own protection, the fact that he's calling my phone... I have to be worried about is that going to happen to me one day?"
    • destiny basnight

Credit card fraud ring: Feds bust South Beach club operators in sexy 'B-Girls' case - S... - 0 views

  • Sexy Eastern European women dubbed "B-Girls" seduced touristy businessmen at a half-dozen South Beach nightclubs, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars in fraudulent charges on their credit cards for expensive bottles of champagne and other booze without their knowledge,
    • destiny basnight

How would they be able to retrieve their money and credit cards and buy things with them without the knowledge of the men.
  • FBI agents arrested 17 men and women, mostly from South Florida and Eastern European countries
    • destiny basnight

      Why were they arrested?
  • The club operators allegedly hired the women as "Bar Girls" to lure as many as 88 visiting businessmen into the Washington Avenue clubs to rack up the charges on their credit cards — sometimes by forging signatures on receipts, according to an FBI criminal affidavit.
    • destiny basnight

Were they hired to do all of that or just to bring more people into the bar?
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • The FBI carried out the undercover investigation by deploying an agent who was able to infiltrate the alleged crime ring by posing as a "corrupt police officer working off-duty" as a bouncer or doorman.
    • destiny basnight

Was he undercover for a long time? What exactly did he see or find?
  • The 17 defendants who operated the clubs are charged with wire fraud, prosecutors said. They are scheduled to have their first appearances in Miami federal court Wednesday afternoon.
    • destiny basnight

      Does this include the women?
  • "This scheme used women from Eastern Europe to lure and defraud out-of-state businessmen and tourists," U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer said in a statement. "This scheme preyed on our tourists and gave our tourism industry a black eye."

    • destiny basnight

Why would a big group of 20 boys grab just one girl to rape when theres so many of them and why one so young?

How would her parents have anything to do with her being raped?
  • "Where were they when this girl was seen wandering at all hours with no supervision and pretending to be much older?"
    • destiny basnight

It doesnt matter where they were the fact is their daughter was raped and she could have lied about where she was but a lot of teenagers do and people cant act like no one ever lies about where they are or their age or anything like that she was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
  • Maria told the Chronicle she believes her daughter may have been seeking attention in the past and says she and her husband had once questioned their daughter about a lurid photo of a boy that was found on a cell phone she used, but she says the boys should have known better.
    • destiny basnight

Why didnt she go in and look for her kids. I feel that she should have gotten her husband, one of them could of went to the neighbor and the other to look for their kids.

  • The woman then found her husband sleeping in the truck and they rushed back to the house, which was by that time fully engulfed in flames.
    • destiny basnight

If she already wasted time going to the neighbors why isn't she going into her house. I feel as though she was not trying really hard to get her kids out of the fire because she wasted so much time before going into the house to look for her kids, and maybe more of them could have been saved. She should have put in extra effort because many of them were young.
  • Officials said the children died of smoke inhalation. the cause of the blaze was not immediately known
    • destiny basnight

Do they know what caused the fire now?
  • .Pennsylvania State Police said the family's patriarch had left the home late Tuesday evening to prepare the dairy farm's delivery truck.
    • destiny basnight

If he was supposed to be out doing this then why was he sleeping in the truck. I think this all could have been prevented if the parents were more responsible. It may not be their fault, they could have helped prevented this or at least helped save some of their children.

Defense of Marriage Act is Indefensible | StarTribune.com - 0 views

  • The decision is being hailed as one more victory for lesbian and gay Americans, but the reality is that this is a win for all Americans, including conservatives.
    • destiny basnight

Does this mean that no states can make gay marriage illegal anymore?
  • What DOMA did when it was enacted 15 years ago by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Clinton, was to create a law that legally discriminated against a group of citizens.
    • destiny basnight

I do not understand how all other types of discrimination seemed to be negative at the time but this was allowed.
  • it prevented the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages and it permitted states to not recognize gay marriages performed elsewhere
    • destiny basnight

I do not understand what is the difference between a man and a woman getting married or two men. Why was this allowed to be illegal if it did not affect anyone besides gay people?
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • Yet those couples, legally married in their home state or Washington, D.C., do not enjoy the same rights as legally married heterosexual couples in the United States do.
    • destiny basnight

What are all of the rights that gay married couples do not get to enjoy?
  • Similarly, our government should never cherry-pick which rights and privileges are awarded to which citizens.
    • destiny basnight

This is the same with certain races the same way you cannot deny someone their rights because of their race you should not be able to deny someone their rights because of their sexuality. As many people have claimed, it violates their right to privacy because who they marry is their business.
  • Under DOMA, gay couples legally married in Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the District of Columbia, are not entitled to over 1,000 federal benefits that married heterosexual couples have. Legally married gay couples can’t file joint federal tax returns, collect survivor benefits from Social Security or avoid estate taxes when a gay spouse dies.
    • destiny basnight

Are gay couples allowed it adopt children? And if they are do they have the same cusody rules as a married man and woman would?
  • As a country, do we really want separate and unequal laws for different citizens? And if we do – if we allow discriminatory legislation like DOMA to stand – what will prevent some future generation from passing legislation that might discriminate against other groups of people?
    • destiny basnight

This is true because just like before with race and religions that were outcast, we can not do this to someone because of their sexuality. Eventually all of this racism and prejudice will come backa and people will think it is okay.
  • Any law that degrades human personality is unjust.” DOMA is an unjust law. It was time for our government to stop
    • destiny basnight

Agreed. People should not feel like outcasts because of certain choices they make, their religion, their race or anything else. American should influence people to be whoever they are and try to put them in a safe environment to live no matter how different they are.

Bodies of Four Americans Killed By Somali Pirates Headed Home on USS Enterprise Along W... - 0 views

  • The bodies of the four Americans killed after Somali pirates hijacked their yacht headed home on the USS Enterprise from the dangerous waters off the Somali coast last night
    • destiny basnight

      Were they dead bodies?
  • "There is an ongoing investigation into the hijacking,"
    • destiny basnight

What are they investigating? If they hi-jacked them then thats what they did.
  • The deaths at the hands of pirates increases concern about the growing strength of piracy around the horn of Africa
    • destiny basnight

What makes somebody a pirate? And how much more power do pirates have than any other group of poeple on a boat?

  • Piracy is a "top priority for NATO and there has been an increased presence," Olson said
    • destiny basnight

If its such a big problem why don't many people know about the issue? People probably don't see piracy as a big problem to be aware of because you never really think of piracy as an existing problem.
  • Jean Adam usually kept a blog during her travels, but stopped posting when the group hit dangerous waters to avoid giving pirates a way to track them.
    • destiny basnight

Why did they take dangerous waters? If she knew there was a chance that pirates were there why didnt they turn around or go a different way.
  • President Obama had authorized Navy warships to follow the yacht and use deadly force if needed, hoping to keep the Americans safe
    • destiny basnight

They should probably have navy warships on watch all the time to protect people from these issues.
  • Officials were negotiating with two pirates on board the destroyer USS Sterett. In the midst of those negotiations, without warning, pirates on board the hijacked yacht fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the Sterett.

Mississippi governor asked to denounce attempts to honor KKK leader - CNN.com - 0 views

  • Forrest, a popular and controversial figure, is best known as a leader of the KKK, the white supremacist group known for terrorizing blacks in the South after the Civil War
    • destiny basnight

Does the KKK still commit racist acts?
  • The controversy over whether Forrest conducted or condoned the massacre is still a matter for heated debate.
    • destiny basnight

It is understandable that this is still a very heated topic to many people but there has been a change and this was a long time ago.
  • Mississippi NAACP leaders feel a state-sanctioned license plate honoring a man with ties to the KKK sends the wrong message to people in the state and across the country.
    • destiny basnight

I completely agree that this would send the wrong message. The same way an employer would decide not to hire someone based on prior convictions and/or misdemeanors this kind of affiliation should not allow him to be honored for anything of this sort.

  • "Any individual who was a traitor to our country and our Constitution should be treated as such," said Derrick Johnson, president of the state NAACP chapter.
    • destiny basnight

I understand being the leader of the NAACP he would think and feel this way but you have to give people the benefit of the doubt sometimes. I also agree he should not honored but that the president of the NAACP should take it a little easy on him.
  • Forrest was a "terrorist" whose acts were "immoral and unconstitutional,
    • destiny basnight

This is true. In a way he should be viewed just as we see the terrorists that attacked the twin towers, though they are against our nation the KKK is against african americans which is a group of people.
  • The group's website says they "are united in sending a message to the state government of Mississippi that WE WILL NOT STAND for the public glorification of one of the original leaders of the Ku Klux Klan."
    • destiny basnight

I feel as though going through with this will just cause more trouble for him and everyone around him and possibly endanger him.
  • "If we can't hold him up to where he's supposed to be, then nobody else is gonna do it," group member Greg Stewart said. Forrest is being "unfairly maligned," he told CNN.
    • destiny basnight

Though to a certain extent this is true he committed acts of violence and these are the consequences. It's just something he has to deal with because of what he did.
  • Stewart said Forrest was chosen to be recognized not because of his time with the KKK, but for his spirit and leadership during the Civil War.
    • destiny basnight

But there was nothing civil about his acts towards these people.
  • Barbour has not responded to the controversy since it began making headlines last week.
    • destiny basnight

He probably understands that it will cause a lot of uneceassary preventable problems.

Palin says U.S. headed down 'road to ruin' - St. Petersburg Times - 0 views

  • Sarah Palin opened a celebration of Ronald Reagan by declaring that the United States was lurching toward a "road to ruin,"
    • destiny basnight

As a governor i do not think that she should say such things because she should be trying to help change the situation or encourage a change.
  • a new direction was urgently needed in Washington.
    • destiny basnight

What new direction? i do not think that will help. the country is too far in dept and trouble for someone to easily get us out. it will take a while no matter who is trying.
  • She reminded her audience that he, too, was "mocked, ridiculed and criticized" before his conservative vision became accepted Republican doctrine.
    • destiny basnight

What's her point? Of course someones new ideas for the government arent always going to be automatically accepted because change could be for the worst.
