Maryland man glued to Wal-Mart toilet seat - CNN.com - 0 views

  • April Fools' Day prank that left a man glued to a toilet at a Wal-Mart store.
    • Kyle Wisner

How does the person allow this to happen?
  • If caught, the jokester who doused the seat with glue at the Elkton Wal-Mart on March 31 could face second-degree assault charges,
    • Kyle Wisner

How does this qualify as second degree assault?
  • they were unable to disconnect the toilet seat from his body, Donnelly said.
    • Kyle Wisner

      Then what did they do?

  • Police do not suspect that the victim was specifically targeted, but that the incident was a random prank, Donnelly said. They have not received reports of glue-laden toilet seats since.

Credit card fraud ring: Feds bust South Beach club operators in sexy 'B-Girls' case - S... - 0 views

  • Sexy Eastern European women dubbed "B-Girls" seduced touristy businessmen at a half-dozen South Beach nightclubs, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars in fraudulent charges on their credit cards for expensive bottles of champagne and other booze without their knowledge,
    • destiny basnight

How would they be able to retrieve their money and credit cards and buy things with them without the knowledge of the men.
  • FBI agents arrested 17 men and women, mostly from South Florida and Eastern European countries
    • destiny basnight

      Why were they arrested?
  • The club operators allegedly hired the women as "Bar Girls" to lure as many as 88 visiting businessmen into the Washington Avenue clubs to rack up the charges on their credit cards — sometimes by forging signatures on receipts, according to an FBI criminal affidavit.
    • destiny basnight

Were they hired to do all of that or just to bring more people into the bar?
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • The FBI carried out the undercover investigation by deploying an agent who was able to infiltrate the alleged crime ring by posing as a "corrupt police officer working off-duty" as a bouncer or doorman.
    • destiny basnight

Was he undercover for a long time? What exactly did he see or find?
  • The 17 defendants who operated the clubs are charged with wire fraud, prosecutors said. They are scheduled to have their first appearances in Miami federal court Wednesday afternoon.
    • destiny basnight

      Does this include the women?
  • "This scheme used women from Eastern Europe to lure and defraud out-of-state businessmen and tourists," U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer said in a statement. "This scheme preyed on our tourists and gave our tourism industry a black eye."
    • destiny basnight

I do not see why it makes the area see so bad because it is only one incident and that does not mean the rest of the area is running a scheme like this one.

Murder charge looms in Dominican Republic for Orioles pitcher - CNN.com - 0 views

  • Simon is suspected of shooting 25-year-old Michael Castillo to death and wounding Castillo's cousin in the northern coastal town of Puerto Plata during the early morning hours of New Year's Day.
    • Davonta Covington

Was this person drunk? Why would he randomly shoot someone? I think he was drunk an wasnt aware of his actions that he committed a crime that night.
  • Although Simon has reached a settlement with Castillo's family to drop wrongful death charges, prosecutor Victor Mueses, speaking on the phone from Santo Domingo, said that recent forensic investigation results give his office "enough to proceed" with unspecified murder charges.
    • Davonta Covington

Even though this is not in our country this man shouldnt be let off the hook for committing this crime. I think the people shouldnt cut him a deal because thats just showing that you can get away with anything in the DR and just pay off a family to go to a better life.
  • The Orioles have placed righthander Simon on their restricted list. When he was released from jail, the team's website said that "Simon is unlikely to pitch in 2011 due to off-the-field issues."
    • Davonta Covington

This is the right thing to do. I think he shouldnt be able to play baseball for the time he spent in jail. Meaning I think he should get more time in jail and not play baseball. Because if it happen in the US it would be a very different case and somebody wouldnt be playing baseball. So why give this man a brake just because he lives in a different country. Murder is still murder no matter where it happens.

Facebook photos: Parents Sue Facebook Over Photos of Dead Daughter - chicagotribune.com - 0 views

  • The parents of a murder victim are suing Facebook after a paramedic pleaded guilty to photographing their daughter's corpse and posting the image to the social networking site, according to court documents
    • Robyn Allen

That is disgusting. Why would someone do that? I really hope he is sued for everything he owns or he goes to jail for a very long time. Why would anyone think that was ok to put on Facebook? I worry about some of the pictures I put up of myself and someone put up a picture of a girl who had been strangeled! That is so sick.
  • Caroline Wimmer, 26, was found by her parents, Ronald and Martha, after she was strangled with a hair-dryer cord in March 2009 in Staten Island, New York.
    • Robyn Allen

Do they know who did it? Do they have any leads? Why is it that the only thing this article seems to care about is the fact that her picture is on Facebook? I mean yeah that is horrible. Extremely horrible with a sick twisted ending, but what are the police doing about the murder? It is obviously a homicide, I doubt anyone would strangle themselves with a hairdryer for a suicide...
  • later pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after posting to Facebook the photographs he took, the documents said.
    • Robyn Allen

Disorderly conduct?! That is way worse then disorderly conduct. It is taking away the family's right to privacy. He violated an amendment of the family and the evidence is in plain view! He needs mental help. This is way worse then disorderly conduct...
  • ...9 more annotations...
  • "All I want is my daughter's picture back,"
    • Robyn Allen

I feel so bad for this family.. Their daughter was not only murdered but they have pictures of her dead body on the internet. It is like disscreation.
  • The couple is suing Facebook in an effort to force the company to turn over the image, identify who may have downloaded the photograph and prevent the image from being further disseminated,
    • Robyn Allen

They should sue more then Facebook... They claim that they preview all images that are posted but they obviously don't.
  • They "would like to move on," Batra said, adding that "it's very tough to heal when you know there are sick people out in the world look at their dead daughter's image."
    • Robyn Allen

I would be so mad. I don't even know how I would feel if I knew people were looking at pictures of my daughters dead body. It is dissrepectful. Utterly and totally dissrespectful.
  • But the social networking site could be protected by the 1996 Communications Decency Act, which says "no provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider."
    • Robyn Allen

It wasn't decent! How could it possibly be protected by that? Does that mean Facebook is responsible?
  • The parents are also suing their daughter's convicted murderer, Calvin Lawson, paramedic Musarella, the city of New York and Greenleaf Arms Incorporated -- the company that owns the apartment building where Wimmer's body was found
    • Robyn Allen

So they know who her murderer is? Couldn't the paramedic be treated as an accomplice? I mean I would sue him as an accomplice. He may not have participated in the murder but he brought attention to it.
  • "This lawsuit assumes traditional defendants as well as nontraditional defendants, including the City of New York and Facebook, that are unique to this case arising out of cybercrime," Batra said.
    • Robyn Allen

How is sueing Facebook nontraditional in a lawsuit against cybercrime? Wouldn't that just be assumed? So would the state of New York... He was a paramedic, technically a government worker?
  • Meanwhile, Musarella has forfeited his EMT certification and was ordered to 200 hours of community service.
    • Robyn Allen

200 hours?! Are you serious?! That is not a good punishment for dissecreating a human body! Is that what a life is worth now? 200 hours of community service? Really... That isn't good enough. Oh and he forfeited it? That should have been taken from him. Ripped up in front of his face. He is a sick person.
  • The image was discovered by an acquaintance of Musarella, who alerted Richmond University Medical Center, according to Batra.
    • Robyn Allen

If any of my friends did that I would rat on them in a heart beat. That is so extremely dissrespectful. I hate dissrespect. I can't stand it and to sit here and read this article about this man dissrepsecting a woman's dead body... It is sick. So totally sick.
  • Martha Wimmer said Tuesday that she is traveling to the state capitol in support of pending legislation that would enact harsher penalties for a public worker who broadcasts or publishes an image of a crime scene outside their official duties.
    • Robyn Allen

Isn't that already a law? It is like doctor patient confidentiality or how teachers can't talk about their students lives? People can get fired for that. Police officers aren't aloud to do that, judges, jury members, therapists, anything that requires you to work with people. Were EMT's just left out of this? Why wasn't ot already a Class E felony?

Sept. 11 Terrorist Suspects to Face Guantanamo Military Trial, U.S. Says - Bloomberg - 0 views

  • abandoned plans for a civilian trial in New York City for the self- proclaimed mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks and is sending the case to a military commission at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
    • Purnima Malik

It makes sense to move on this case to military commission because of the nature of the trial but would this be constitutional? And why in Cuba? how exactly will this work out. Whatever the outcome this case will end up in the books.
  • Lawmakers enacted legislation that blocked the administration from moving terror suspects from Guantanamo to the U.S. for trial
    • Purnima Malik

Sure we don't want terrorist in country but who will this work? Going back to the first highlight section why was this trial tried for civil court- why not federal court or this military commission thing instead.
  • “Members of Congress have intervened and imposed restrictions blocking the administration from bringing any Guantanamo detainees to trial in the United States, regardless of the venue,”
    • Purnima Malik

How does Guantanamo feel about this? While we were learning about sentencing where does keeping terrorist in prisons outside the US fall in.

  • Those unwise and unwarranted restrictions undermine our counterterrorism efforts and could harm our national security.”
    • Purnima Malik

As much as terriosts have kept the US on its toes, and although there might be a probability of harming national security, I don't think this is right. US should stand up against these terroist, instead of keeping them a yard away place them in those coffins- like they really care for their lives anyway.
  • alleged terrorists could be found not guilty on a legal technicality.
    • Purnima Malik

What would that legal technicality be? They killed thousands of innocent people! Do these criminals have a lawyer defending them? Because that lawyer would have a lot guts to take such a bullet.
  • one of the most well-researched and documented cases I have ever seen in my decades of experience as a prosecutor.”
    • Purnima Malik

Hey! That's what I thought! This trial will big huge. It be on the news and affect the stock market negatively.
  • suspects “are charged with war crimes and their cases belong before military commissions, not federal courts here in the United States,”
    • Purnima Malik

Actually wouldn't it be terrorism before war crimes because the war was a result to the attack?
  • civilian trial, called Guantanamo the “ideal setting” for the trial because it is ’’fully secure.’’
    • Purnima Malik

If this means that US will be safe from a risk of a terrorist attack on the US because of this trial, that is just an assumption. The truth is that we will never be sure.
  • We have witnessed the serious problems that arise when high-level terrorists are tried in civilian courts -- including the dismissal of important evidence, attacks on guards, intelligence leaks and enormous burdens on the surrounding
    • Purnima Malik

And housing this problem in Cuba will solve this?
  • commissions are “broken and deficient” and shouldn’t be used to try the Sept. 11 suspects.
    • Purnima Malik

How does this make any sense, I would charge them with for everything I could- even PTS. Shouldn't this case be easy?
  • Americans are murdered on American soil, we should not be afraid to bring those responsible for those heinous acts to justice in American courts
    • Purnima Malik

I agree with Leahy. It is a risk but they should know that America is strong, that their crime is worst in the history of crimes.
  • The 80-page indictment, which named the almost 3,000 people killed in the attacks, charged Mohammed and four others with conceiving and helping execute the plan to hijack airliners and crash them into U.S. buildings “causing maximum casualties and destruction.”
    • Purnima Malik

This is exactly why I think the trial should be in America. This was the most tragic day I could think of and a lot of people lost lives. They don't deserve any sympathy.
  • Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

  • trials at Guantanamo

Why are people so against having Guantanamo opened? I think that its a place to keep them away from US citzens while in jail.
  • We have witnessed the serious problems that arise when high-level terrorists are tried in civilian courts -- including the dismissal of important evidence, attacks on guards, intelligence leaks and enormous burdens on the surrounding community,” Sessions said.

Okla. Murder-Conspiracy Suspect Found Dead After Standoff - FoxNews.com - 0 views

  • A defendant in a high-profile Oklahoma murder case was found dead in a Tulsa home following an overnight standoff, police said Tuesday.
    • Adam Mazurek

The man was already in trouble with the law. Why would he want to make his potential punishments even more severe by doing this?
  • Tulsa police officer Leland Ashley said Tuesday that officers entered the property in the 5000 block of North Utica Place after hearing gunshots.
    • Adam Mazurek

The article did not say anything about the man firing a gun. If he did not hurt the girl he kidnapped, I wonder what his purpose was to shoot the gun.
  • "We used precautions before we made any type of entry. We actually used chemical agents, pepper balls outside the residence to attempt to get a response. We were unable to get any type of response," Ashley said.
    • Adam Mazurek

Why would the police use chemical agents and pepper balls when that could risk the hostage getting hurt?
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • He released the girl unharmed shortly before 10:30 p.m., but remained holed-up inside the house, which the police had surrounded.
    • Adam Mazurek

That is sure a relief, especially to the girl's mother.
  • It was the second time in 14 months Shields had taken the girl hostage, KWTV reported, with authorities alleging on the earlier occasion that Shields had a "homicide starter kit" with him that included a gun, handcuffs, and sleeping pills.
    • Adam Mazurek

That is crazy! Why did the man not go to jail the first time he kidnapped the girl? The second kidnapping would have been avoided if he was in jail!
  • Shields was scheduled for a court appearance Monday afternoon on charges relating to the murder of businessman Neal Sweeney, but failed to show up.
    • Adam Mazurek

I wonder if this is why he took the girl hostage. He did not want to go to court, so he thought that if he took the girl hostage he would not have to go.
  •
In Oklahoma, a defendant took his ex-girlfriend's daughter hostage in a house. The man already was supposed to go to court for a murder case. The standoff lasted nearly six hours before he let the girl go unharmed, but he did come out of the house. When the police went into they house, they found the man killed himself.

Jury finds man guilty in NJ triple murder trial - US news - msnbc.com - 0 views

  • NEWARK, N.J. — A 20-year-old man was convicted Tuesday of murder in the execution-style slayings of three college-bound friends in a Newark, N.J., schoolyard in 2007.
    • Michelle Perritt

I think it is terrible when people have such bad rage that they would kill three of their friends. When they say execution style does that mean that he chopped their heads off? It's a shame to see that 3 people around my age dead.
  • All three victims were shot in the back of the head as they knelt in front of a wall, and one was slashed with a machete. A fourth victim was slashed and shot but survived and testified against Alfaro.
  • ...6 more annotations...
    • Michelle Perritt

I would hope that the 4th victum will be living proof that this man should go to jail for life. I can't imagine what it would feel like to the 1 out of 4 people who survived such gruesome attacks.
  • As the verdicts were read, about a dozen of the victims' family members hugged and wept softly in the gallery.
    • Michelle Perritt

What did he get from getting 16 out of 17 counts? What made the jury decide against charging him with the 17th count? Do they have to look at each count seperate?
  • Alfaro's half-brother and another man are already serving multiple life sentences for the killings. Three defendants' cases are pending.
    • Michelle Perritt

I don't understand how many people were actually involved in this case because at first they made it seem like just one person and now that I read this further they make it seem like there was a whole group of people who were invovled. Was this gang related?
  • but Alfaro is likely to spend the rest of his life in prison.
    • Michelle Perritt

I hope from all the suffering that these families have had to go through that he gets life in Prision because if deffinitely doesn't seem right if he doesn't.
  • Alfaro admitted joining the gang several months before the crimes, but testified he was shocked that night when he realized what was happening. According to Alfaro, Godinez had told him there were "rivals" at the playground, which he took to mean rival gang members.
    • Michelle Perritt

I don't get what the point of being in a gang is. It is basically just a life of crime and violence and what do the people get out of it? It just doesn't make sense. Also is it legal to be in a gang in the first place, like if the police find out that your in a gang can you be arrested for that only?
  • Alfaro admitted to police that he slashed Hightower with the machete before she and the others were shot. But on the witness stand, he denied doing it and said he was pressured by a detective to change his statement to conform to what other defendants had already told police.
    • Michelle Perritt

It is pretty stupid to admitt something and then try to say that you actually didn't say it. They have him on record!

I assume the boy has already been tried and convicted? If so, then I think the girl will also be convicted.

    • Steph Starr

These kids are 3 and 4 years old when 9/11 happened, and I don't think they would be exposed to any other major terrorist attack, so I think their prejudice stems from surrounding adults. They might have heard their parents at home, or perhaps their teachers are biased, and this talk has influenced them to be prejudiced as well.

    • Rob High

I wonder what the woman has to lose in all this drama that would make her so passionate. Overall I don't think her punishment should be too harsh, and instead they should direct her to a blog where it's okay to say pretty much whatever you want.
  • was angry at lawmakers who voted to limit collective bargaining for about 300,000 state workers.

  • Investigators allege that Tata, 22, left seven children alone at her Houston day care center with the stove on while she went to a store. Four children died, and three others were injured in the fire.
    • Samantha Montalvo

This is so horrible! I can't believe she actually would leave them completely alone AND leave the oven on.

  • - either the fluid or the IV bags containing the fluids -- were contaminated with bacteria
    • Marco Quintana

Its crazy to think that something like this can happen to any hospital and its something that you cant predict
  • "The families who have lost loved ones are not only in shock and grieving their losses, but they are concerned that this problem may be more widespread than is now known," said Jere L. Beasley, an attorney representing Kise's family.

I heard that the bateria in the IV bags are the same found in bathtubs( the black stuff) and that is what is going through their veins. :(

    • Eric Sowers

  • The outbreak was identified March 16 when two hospitals reported unusual cases of bacteria among high-risk patients
    • Eric Sowers

Who is gonna get the blame for this outbreak? Is it just gonna be the hospital or idividual people
  • Patients who get the product are typically already very sick

How long is a timely warning?
  • The school said it will appeal.

I would too. They provided the best warning that they could in that situation.

Walmart sex-bias case divides US supreme court | Business | The Guardian - 0 views

  • Conservative judges on the US supreme court sharply challenged lawyers attempting to bring the biggest sex discrimination case in history
    • Purnima Malik

The question would be whether Walmart is too big to get sued.
  • The court's justices are set to decide by June whether lawyers representing potentially more than a million women employed by Walmart can bring a class-action sex-discrimination lawsuit against the retail giant.
    • Purnima Malik

Although there is power in numbers. I don't think this will be effective because each women's case would have to be looked at carefully. Going after Walmart will generate a lot more profits, than individual branches. Everyone involved in this case will have to be on the same page and I wouldn't be easy to pull off.
  • The potentially liability in the case could reach billions of dollars. The suit began nearly 10 years ago when it was originally filed on behalf of employee Betty Dukes and five of her co-workers.
    • Purnima Malik

I thought people had the right to a speedy trial, 10 years is not speedy! Its something that this lawsuit started with 5 women and now it have millions. If Walmart appealed to let the case go, then what happened?

  • corporate culture that stereotypes women and that has led to discrimination in pay and promotion.
    • Purnima Malik

According to another source in my econ class, men were earning about a dollar fifty more than men. And promotions were those pat on the back kind. If corporations are considered individual entities then should Walmart get sued as a whole?
  • statistical element in the case was "causing concerns". "Statistics alone seem to be troubling for the courts," he said. "There needs to be other evidence than a mathematical analysis of pay scales." He said evidence, such as testimony from employees about a sexist corporate culture or a policy of discrimination, would bolster the case.
    • Purnima Malik

Is there any other hard evidence that could be used? What was the given statistical evidence? Is the court siding to one side or another?
  • Wal-Mart denies discrimination.

Is this was Walmart claimed ten years ago in the other trial?
  • He said it was impossible for the company to defend its treatment of such a massive number of people when they worked at thousands of different stores and in many different jobs.
    • Purnima Malik

However if the treatment across many stores and job positions are the same then how but can it be. Shouldn't Walmart take responsible for the people they hired?

Medical marijuana dispensary opens near Catholic Church and school. Should this be ille... - 0 views

  • Now city council is considering a new ordinance that would make this illegal
    • Steph Starr

What would the law say? No medical marijuana dispensaries within a certain distance of schools? This seems silly. I understand why they're upset, but making it illegal doesn't seem plausible.
  • across the street from a Catholic Church and school in Owosso
    • Steph Starr

The article never states what age these school kids are. They could be high schoolers, which would be less concerning than elementary students.
  • I think this is an assault on children's innocence. They go to school to learn, obviously they’re curious, but this is not a way to learn about life,”
    • Steph Starr

While I understand why they are concerned, I think that making it a big deal might have a negative result. The more they argue about it, the more mystery surrounds it, which could lead to kids trying it just to see what it's like. It now has a kind of allure. Instead, if they were just honest with the kids, they would be able to make their own rational decisions.

It seems as though the Countries in the Middle East are always trying to do something to the American people. I'm not saying that it is all people from the Middle East, but I just don't understand why they would want to harm so many innocent people for no reason at all.
  • Koenig also set a trial date of May 2 for the 20-year-old, who faces life in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

I hope by life in Prision they mean life in Prision without the chance to get parole because we don't want people like this back in society. I can't believe that he is 20 years old and has already planned something as extreme as this.
  • According to court records, federal investigators say Aldawsari conducted online research into how to construct an improvised explosive device, or IED, using several chemicals as ingredients. He also "acquired or (has) taken a substantial step toward acquiring most of the ingredients and equipment" needed for the bomb, documents said.
    • Michelle Perritt

I think it is a shame that someone like that would waste their knowledge of another language and use it for bad instead of good. I also think that it is pretty messed up that if you want to build a bomb all you have to do is look up the steps on the interent.
