Man says obscene texts came from missing wife's phone - Nancy Grace - CNN.com Blogs - 0 views

  • Just after his wife of 14 years disappeared more than five days ago, the husband of a missing Georgia woman says he received profanity-laced text messages that were very uncharacteristic of her.

This is like that one kidnap/murder in New York earlier in the year. Someone kidnapped a young woman in her early 20's and sent her parents messages that said stuff like, "I'm scared," or, "I'm here with this person and they won't let me leave." These messages were sent after she was dead though. I hope this woman is still alive...
  • "It's over and I'm throwing the phone out the window," read one of the messages from Wazinah Suleiman. Others contained curses, including the f-word, according to her husband, Abed Suleiman,
    • Robyn Allen

Are they Muslim? Not that it matters but this man sounds like he is her father. She is a grown woman, she can speak how she wants. Unless he is trying to say she doesn't ever use bad words...
  • "That's the way she is," he said. His 30-year-old wife is a kindergarten teacher's assistant.
    • Robyn Allen

Oh ok, so she doesn't usually use bad words. They started havign kids young if she is only 30 and has a 12 year old...
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Later, Wazinah Suleiman left the couple's five children, ages 6 through 12, alone while she was supposedly going to a nearby Walmart in Cartersville, Georgia, to rent a video, which she did not do. Police say there is no evidence she ever made it to Walmart.
    • Robyn Allen

She could have been being black mailed... I hope that she wasn't kidnapped... Why would someone leave a 12 year old in charge of their 4 siblings though? This story seems like there might be something missing...
  • When Suleiman and his friend were about an hour from home they were informed that turkey hunting season was to begin the following weekend. They immediately turned around, Suleiman says.
    • Robyn Allen

To me this seems planned... A mother left her five children home alone in care of her oldest who is only 12. The father and his friend went turkey hunting but then they conviently found out it wasnt supposed to start till next weekend... To me this just seems like it was set up...

Alleged rape, killing of gay rights campaigner sparks call for action - CNN.com - 0 views

  • A 24-year-old who was stabbed to death in South Africa is the victim of "corrective rape," gay rights activists said Thursday, a crime where men attack lesbians in an attempt to reverse their sexual orientation.
    • Samantha Montalvo

I don't understand why men would actually think raping women would convert their sexuality.
  • She was raped, stabbed with broken glass several times and her face pummelled with rocks, Human Rights Watch said.
    • Samantha Montalvo

I don't understand why they raped and messed her face up. They believe that raping them will convert their sexuality, so why did they stab and kill her.
  • Earlier this week, the nation's Justice Ministry set up a task force to address hate crimes against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender South Africans.
    • Samantha Montalvo

They should have been made this organization, so something like this wouldn't have happened.
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • "Her attack is a case of corrective rape," said gay rights activist Lydia Kunu. "Neighbors said they heard her attackers telling her, 'We will take the lesbian out of you. ' They were mocking her and asking her why she acts like a man."
    • Samantha Montalvo

It's not just a corrective rape, it is also a murder. The definition of rape does not include murder. Just because women act like men does not mean men have the right to do things like this to women.
  • The death has sparked renewed calls for action as rights groups warn of escalated homophobic attacks.
  • Mthathi said it is hard to get an overall number of the people subjected to violence because attacks go unreported over the distrust for the judicial system.
    • Samantha Montalvo

I can definately understand why so many cases go unheard of because no one can be trusted or helped.
  • The use of the term "corrective rape" started three years ago after the rape and murder of Eudy Simelane, a well-known soccer player who lived openly as a lesbian.
    • Samantha Montalvo

If this kind of situation happened three years ago something should have been done about it then, not waited until it happened again.
  • "It is our responsibility to provide safety, and we take that job seriously,"
    • Samantha Montalvo

They say this but they haven't done anything to start to end this violence.
  • The new task force is scheduled to start working in July. It will address issues such as whether police and social workers should undergo sensitivity training, and whether rapists who target sexual minorities should get harsher sentences.
    • Samantha Montalvo

They absolutely should get harsher punishments.

    • Steph Starr

While I understand the part about using her public image, I don't understand how she can sue about the "likeness" part. Of course it's going to look like her, she played the character. Can she control when or where the character is used? You would think that it wouldn't be up to her to decide, but up to the creator of the show or CBS.
  • She is demanding a jury trial

I asked my mom if she had seen "The Beverly Hillbillies", and when she said yes told her about the case. She agrees with everything Douglas is suing for, saying that Donna Douglas WAS Elly May, that no one else played her, and that she should at least get some royalties. I'm not sure I completely agree with her, but now I can see the other viewpoint.

Tucson district in turmoil over state ban on ethnic studies - CSMonitor.com - 0 views

  • Already the target of a federal lawsuit, a controversial Arizona law that essentially bans ethnic studies in public schools has pitted the largest school district in Tucson against students, parents, and other program supporters.

I wonder what would be the reason behind this?
  • raucous four-hour meeting punctuated by the removal of several people from the boardroom and loud protests from the crowd, the board postponed taking action until after it convenes a public forum on the matter.

Honestly people need to be open minded. Take books for example, every year school's have to ban books from their courses. To Kill a Mockingbird has been threatened many times and it has also been banned from several schools too.

I don't understand why people want to ban ethnic studies so badly. If anything I think it gives good insight into what others many be ignore. Anthropologists study religion and ethnic groups and man kind, so should that career be ban too?
  • Under the proposal, the Mexican-American classes would not count toward the social-studies requirement and would instead be electives. Six-and-a-half elective credits are needed for graduation.
    • Purnima Malik

I am personally against the idea to requiring students to take classes that won't make an impact for their futures- maybe I am like that because I am a selective learner.
  • Latino students who have traditionally struggled to graduate, will not take the additional courses and double up for an additional history class,” he said.
    • Purnima Malik

Talking about being selective, this is a generalization. I am pretty sure that a good amount of students did take additional courses. These guys need a better teacher that can challenge them into learning like in the movie Stand and Deliver.
  • Dozens of police, some in riot gear, surrounded the building where the meeting (which included an overflow crowd) took place. A police helicopter even hovered above. Before the start of another meeting last week, when the matter was originally supposed to be taken up, youths had chained themselves to board members’ chairs. That session was canceled.

Wow! This banning thing is intense. I wonder what will happen.

Widely distributed death photo of Osama bin Laden is fake - CNN.com - 0 views

  • A graphic image of what was reported to be Osama bin Laden's bloodied face, which went viral on the Internet and was plastered on the front page of newspapers around the world, is a fake.
    • Cole Gentry

I got this picture through facebook and i thought it was fake. It looked real but i knew that the government would of addressed the offical photo release and they didn't. So I assumed it wasn't real.

    • Cole Gentry

People to the untrained eye couldn't tell but I'm sure professionals can tell that it is fake.
  • The Guardian newspaper in Britain reported the picture is actually a combination of two photographs: a bloodied corpse and a real image of bin Laden that was taken in 1998 and used by the Reuters news agency.

'Sister Wives' Kody and Robyn Brown expecting a baby - CNN.com - 0 views

  • Kody Brown, the shaggy-haired patriarch who stars on TLC's "Sister Wives," and his fourth wife Robyn, are expecting a baby.
    • Robyn Allen

I'm not gonna lie, I watch this show... Also it freaks me out because one of his 'wives' is named Robyn...
  • "You should have seen the look on his face when we found out," Robyn tells PEOPLE exclusively. "It was priceless."
    • Robyn Allen

Probably because he already has 11 kids... I don't understand why these women aren't jealous... I know I would be...
  • The baby, due in mid October, will be the first for Kody and Robyn, who has three children from a previous marriage. This will be the 17th child for the family, which includes Kody's three other wives and their kids.
    • Robyn Allen

I'm not sure how I feel about this statement... I mean who likes giving birth? Like the outcome makes it worth it and you heal faster after a natural birth but I mean really, who prefers to give birth at home? Especially with like thirty other people with her? This family is just too open for me I guess.
  • So what has Kody learned after surviving 14 of his wives' previous pregnancies? "I try to always be kind and tender, but when a woman is expecting, you have to be ultra sensitive," he says. "And always do the dishes."
    • Robyn Allen

Honestly if this hadn't have said "...14 of his other wive's pregnancies..." I would have thought it was very sweet. But he ruined it by being a pig. Well I can't really judge. I was raised differently then him. I was raised to look as situations like this as, if a man says he loves another woman then he doesn't deserve your love. I don't really understand their view though.

Teenager Questioned in Death of Baby - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • The police are questioning a 17-year-old in connection with the death of a baby who died on Tuesday while in his care, a law enforcement official said.
    • destiny basnight

Was the boy related to the baby or was he just watching him?
  • The 9-month-old had visible injuries to his torso, suggesting trauma, the official said
    • destiny basnight

Do they have any idea how the baby could have been hurt?
  • The baby, identified by the police as Ryan Ferrer, was unresponsive when officers found him at 11:34 a.m. in a ninth-floor apartment at the Marble Hill Houses, 69 West 225th Street.

How do they not know who the boy is?
  • Paulette Shomo, 69, president of the tenants’ association at the Marble Hill Houses, said police told her that Ryan’s mother needed to go to work and left him with the 17-year-old because her usual baby sitter was late.
    • destiny basnight

Then wouldnt the babysitter have shown up eventually and seen what happened.
  • Ms. Shomo said the police also told her that the teenager might have become angry at the baby for crying and punched him in the torso. “A young man was baby-sitting while waiting for the sitter to come and he hit the baby in the chest,” Ms. Shomo said. “It’s a very serious and sad thing that took place.”

  • Pablo Gonzalez, 53, said the woman had lived in the apartment with her own mother until a year ago, when the older woman died of stomach cancer. “They were very tight,” he said.

Garridos plead guilty in Jaycee Dugard kidnapping - CNN.com - 0 views

  • Phillip and Nancy Garrido pleaded guilty Thursday to the kidnapping and sexual assault of Jaycee Dugard, whom they held captive from age 11 through 29, the El Dorado County, California, district attorney said.
    • Davonta Covington

These people are crazy for doing such things to children. If they didnt have kids of there own then why do this to another family with kids? This is the problem that happens now. People dont know what to do with them selves.
  • The married couple abducted Dugard when she was 11, and they held her in a hidden compound on their home's grounds in Antioch, California.
    • Davonta Covington

Where can these people hide her? This is why we need to watch over our children. You never know what can happen on any given day. Things like this shouldnt happen if people would watch over there kids.
  • "Additionally, were it not for Jaycee's strong cooperation with our office and the prosecution of the Garridos, we would not have been able to firmly stand by our position to take this case to jury trial. Jaycee's courage and willingness to confront her abductors in court directly led to the Defendants' plea and life sentences," Pierson added in his statement.
    • Davonta Covington

I think this was very brave of the girl to actually come and tell what happen. The time she was there was very long and she could have been brain washed and really scared of these people and didnt want to put these people away for the crime that they have committed.

  • She will be sentenced to the negotiated disposition of life in prison, Pierson said. She will receive a 25-years-to-life sentence under the "one strike" rape law, plus 11 years, which is the maximum possible sentence for the kidnapping charges based upon the sentencing laws in 1991, Pierson said.
    • Davonta Covington

This is not all she should get for this. I think she shouldnt get parole and serve all the time that she has in the sentence. Just because she held this young lady for her childhood. She didnt get the chance to grow up, meet people, see what the real world is about, do things that teenagers do, and actually become a women.

SEAL Who Killed Osama Bin Laden: Who Fired the Fatal Shot? - ABC News - 0 views

Terror list suspects allowed to buy guns in US - US news - Security - msnbc.com - 0 views

  • More than 200 people suspected of ties to terrorism bought guns in the U.S. last year legally, FBI figures show.
    • Michelle Perritt

You would think with all of the problems that the US has with terroists, that we would be more careful about these types of issues. To me it pretty much seems like anyone can just go and buy a gun if you want to. I think that they need more control and need to do better checks on people than they currently do because it obviously isn't working very good as is.
  • It is not illegal for people listed on the government's terror watch list to buy weapons. For years, that has bothered Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who is trying again to change the law to keep weapons out of the hands of suspected terrorists.
  • The list of about 450,000 people includes suspected members of al-Qaida and other terrorist organizations, terror financiers, terror recruiters and people who attended training camps. People's names are added to and removed from the watch list every day, and most people never know whether they're on it.
    • Michelle Perritt

Who has acess to these documents? Is it only government pfficals or do the stores where guns are being purchased also have some way of accessing this list?
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • The Justice Department under both the Bush and Obama administrations has supported this effort.
    • Michelle Perritt

If both Bush and Obama saw/see that this is a major issue than why hasn't anything been done to help stop it. I feel like this happens a lot, we see there are issues but no one ever really fixes it or waits to fix it after it's already too late.
  • NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said the watch list lacks integrity and includes law-abiding citizens who are mistaken as having ties to terrorists.
    • Michelle Perritt

There are probably many people that get put on that list that aren't meant to be there, but they should understand at the same time that we need to protect this country and them buying a gun can't be as important as the Countries protection. Sometimes however, people think only of themselves.
  • President Barack Obama has steered clear of politically sensitive gun-control issues. But the Justice Department would support a bill that would help prevent terrorists from getting firearms.
    • Michelle Perritt

    • Marco Quintana

I think that this was very repectful of Obama to contact the former presidents because they were all part of the terrorism timeframe.

Worcester Woman Answers Door, Killed By SUV « CBS Boston - 0 views

  • also get a warrant to inspect the SUV’s black box, which contains information about braking, speed and acceleration
    • Steph Starr

I was aware that planes had a black box, but I did not know that cars also contained this information. How long back does it record? Could it have the entire car's history recorded?
  • That is expected to take several weeks.
    • Steph Starr

Why is this going to take so long? If you need a warrant to go inside a house, the police can have it in minutes by calling a judge. Maybe they mean it will take several weeks to process the information, but that doesn't even make sense to me. It's not as if this is DNA evidence or an autopsy report that needs to go to a lab. I think the results should come back sooner.

    • Steph Starr

When I read this, I immediately thought of a drunk driver. However, it was said that alcohol wasn't involved. If it was indeed a brake failure like the driver claims, why can he still not drive straight? He was purposefully driving through traffic and into a house?

    • Steph Starr

If there had been something wrong with the brakes, then the charges would fall on the car company, right? If it had been the driver's fault, he would be charged with vehicular homicide?

  • A video of the April 18 fight posted online shows two young women kicking and punching 22-year-old Chrissy Lee Polis in the head until she appears to have a seizure.
    • Michelle Perritt

People always go straight to actions because discussing. Why couldn't they have talked to the induvidual about the situation and not have beat them? I think it is for the lack of understanding, our world is becoming different. That's just how it is. There is going to be people who are transgendered and we just have to accept that.
  • "They kicked me in my face. They really hurt me really bad and I’m just afraid to go outside now because of stuff like this," Polis said.
    • Michelle Perritt

That's terrible that they scared Polis so bad that they are now afraid of leaving their house. This person has probably had an internal fight all of their life and you would think people would be more understanding. I'm sure this individuals life has not been easy thus far.
  • McDonald's issued a statement condemning the April 18 beating, and the owner of the Rosedale restaurant announced Saturday that the employee who taped the beating had been fired.
    • Michelle Perritt

I don't agree with the employee posting the video on the internet, however I do think that it was helpful that the situation was taped. Then the police and the owner could see first hand what was going on. I don't know if I agree with this employee being fired for this.

I'm assuming since this girl is 18-years-old that she will be charged as an adult. I know that sometimes, however, if your 18 they can decide to still charge you as a minor. But I don't think they will choose that path in this situation.
