Stranded man documented last days on calendar, police say - This Just In - CNN.com Blogs - 0 views

  • A man who was found dead in a remote mountain area in Oregon apparently was stranded there for more than 60 days by heavy snow - information gleaned from brief notes he made on a homemade calendar, authorities said.
    • destiny basnight

Did anyone know the man was there to begin with?
  • McDonald - who Mueller said was transient, estranged from his family and wasn't reported missing -
    • destiny basnight

It seems hard to believe that no one not even someone that saw his often at the grocery store would notice that he was missing.
  • He stayed there for the rest of the week, apparently to camp, with nothing noted on the calendar except his location
    • destiny basnight

It seems weird that he would plot where he went when apparently he had no friends or family to show it to so they would know about his travels and why would he show himself where he had been?
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • "He had too much snow to push out"
    • destiny basnight

Why didn't he start to drive away or home if he saw it was snowing so hard and there was a chance he would get stuck.
  • "dig o."
    • destiny basnight

      What does this mean?
  • A preliminary investigation and autopsy indicates McDonald's death was consistent with starvation and/or hypothermia, the sheriff's office said.
    • destiny basnight

Did he have any food or clothing with him?
  • He had no cell phone or GPS device. Investigators found no food or food containers, but McDonald may have burned food wrappers in a fire, Mueller said. The March 16-18 entries say "No Fo 1," "No Fo 2" and "No Fo 3," which Mueller says may indicate when McDonald ran out of food.
    • destiny basnight

It just seems as though he was very unprepared and not sure what he was doing because being alone out there I would assume he would at least have a cell phone.
  • "He had the ability, unless he had some physical impairment we didn't pick up on," Mueller said. "When the snow gets to a certain depth, it gets hard to see where the road used to be. We'll never know if he attempted it, but he never noted anything (in the calendar) that he even tried."
    • destiny basnight

He had a chance to get away and chose not to. I see no reason why he would not have at least made an attempt to get away.
  • McDonald's calendar had a couple April entries that weren't related to his predicament: "Motor vehicle registration expires" on the 12th and "can camp at Powers for 20 d." on the 18th.
    • destiny basnight

Why would he write this while he is stranded if it has nothing to do with him being stranded. I'm pretty sure he would be more worried about being stranded than his registration expiring.

If he did not steal anything how could he be charged with burglary. He didnt burglarize anyone he just went in there and fell asleep.

Going by this it seems like Darr was highly under the influence of something whether it be drugs or alcohol. If he was in fact drunk will he be charged with underage drinking along with the other charges he faces?

Body found in Utah desert is male, not missing mother - CNN.com - 0 views

  • Human remains discovered in the Utah desert belong to a young male and are not a missing 28-year-old mother, authorities said, a grim discovery that fuels the mystery and opens a new case.
    • Davonta Covington

This is insane to find out. I think the person who has this man that was found, what can you tell her? You cant tell her in a nice way that her son was found in the desert just left to die.
  • An attorney found the bones in the area where his family owns ranch property.
    • Davonta Covington

I think this can be a little suspicous. This man found the bones by his house that is in the desert not to far from the family house that he owns. This man or family could have commited this crime. For all we know it could be him who did and just trying to play the roll of being the good guy.
  • Josh Powell says he last saw his wife on a cold December night in 2009 as he and his two young sons left to go camping in the Tooele County desert area. Powell's sister reported her as missing.
    • Davonta Covington

So he saw her before he went camping in the desert, the wife body was found in the desert and he reported her missing? I think he did this crime and just wanted to get away with it. Like how you going to leave your wife missing? But now she is dead for some reason. Just think about it and put 2 and 2 together and look at all the facts. The husband could have commited the murder.

Ohio executes man who said he didn't recall crimes - US news - msnbc.com - 0 views

  • The state on Tuesday executed a man who said he didn't remember fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend at the woman's Cincinnati apartment in 1984.
    • Michelle Perritt

Did he think by all of the sudden saying that he doesn't remember what happened that they weren't going to execute him? I'm suprised that he is getting the death penalty for killing his girlfriend. I'm suprised because a lot of people kill other people and don't get the death penalty.
  • put to death using the surgical sedative pentobarbital as a stand-alone execution drug

Is this type of execution painful in any way? What other techniques do they usually use with it since he is only the third person in Ohio doing just this and nothing else?
  • He declined to give a formal final statement but yelled "I love you" to his adult daughter, Michelle Connor, who was in the witness room and shouted back "I love you, daddy" after he had climbed onto a gurney. Technician indicted in case of N.Y. patient who died on floor - CNN.com - 0 views

shared by Rob High on 18 May 11 - No Cached
  • A psychiatric technician was indicted Monday for reckless endangerment and falsifying hospital records, including those of a patient who died unattended on an emergency room floor, according to District Attorney Charles J. Hynes.
    • Rob High

When they say indicted does this basically mean "taken into custody"? If so can anyone be instantly indicted at any time and place if incriminating evidence is found?
  • Easton Royal, 53, is accused of not checking on patients at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, and of claiming on hospital forms he had observed numerous psychiatric patients when he had not, Hynes said in a statement.
    • Rob High

Shouldn't it also be his employers need to have a system in order to check up on anyones work to make sure it is acurate and getting done.
  • Royal may face up to 11 years in prison, according to Hynes. It was not immediately clear whether Royal has a lawyer.

Vatican tells bishops to report sex abuse to cops - World news - Europe - msnbc.com - 0 views

  • This is telling the world that we mean business. We want to be an example of prevention and care
    • Steph Starr

Seeing as how this problem has gone on for a while, building up a nasty reputation, I'm surprised they haven't issued letters before.
  • doubled a statute of limitations for disciplinary action against priests and extended the use of fast-track procedures to defrock them.
    • Steph Starr

I know what statue of limitations means now, thanks to Law class! Yay! But I wonder how long the time window is. The article doesn't say.
  • Without fear of punishment themselves, bishops frequently moved pedophile priests from parish to parish rather than reporting them to police or punishing them under church law
    • Steph Starr

The article said earlier that the letter that was sent did not contain enforcement mechanism to ensure bishops actually follow the guidelines. Here, it is saying bishops do not fear punishment. While the letter was a good idea, it seems like they're concentrating on the wrong problems.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • bishops "it is important to cooperate" with civil law enforcement authorities and follow civil reporting requirements, though it doesn't make such reporting mandatory
    • Steph Starr

I find it strange that bishops wouldn't report it to the police automatically. What do they gain by not telling the authorities? Also, I think that the letter sent out is pretty pointless, as it doesn't make reporting mandatory. It seems more like a guideline than a rule, one that the bishops are already not following.
  • The Vatican has said such a binding rule would be problematic for priests working in countries with repressive regimes.
    • Steph Starr

"Repressive regimes"? I don't understand what this is trying to say. Problematic for whom? The bishop reporting the abuse? Perhaps authorities in repressive regimes will disregard the report... but I guess this isn't the worst case scenario?

I wonder why they chose to arrest the man's best friend. What evidence do they have that shows the best friend committed the crime?

I just can't believe that an argument over something little would cause a person to go off the deep end and kill somebody. It is just so upsetting and sad.

Man charged with killing three teens investigated in girlfriend's son's death - chicago... - 0 views

  • The Blue Island man charged with slaying three teenage women was investigated last summer but never charged in the May "death by neglect" of his girlfriend's toddler son.
    • Robyn Allen

Did they do an investigation? Was it really neglect? They should really investigate further... I don't understand people like this...
  • Pierce, who allegedly strangled two of his victims, told investigators that 17-month-old Jordan Woods had choked inside his apartment, according to a source with knowledge of the case.
    • Robyn Allen

I can't imagine what I would do if something like this happened to me... Like if it was my child. I would be devestated...
  • Jordan had previously suffered a broken leg, the source said, an injury that Pierce attributed to the boy getting his leg caught in a playpen. Pierce's mother said Thursday that the boy had also had his leg mauled by a dog.
    • Robyn Allen

Is his mother sticking up for him? It doesn't matter who it is... If it was my son killing people or anything really, I would turn him in. I would want him to get help and I wouldn't want him to hurt anyone else...
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • Pierce's mother, Esther Pierce-Pearson, said Jordan passed out after suffering from high blood sugar linked to a diabetic condition. The night Jordan died, she said she heard a commotion in her son's apartment and found him trying to resuscitate the boy.
    • Robyn Allen

So he has diabetes now? This doesn't make sense now... This has nothing to do with him having high blood sugar. He was CHOKING.
  • The toddler was reaching for him, Pierce told authorities, but he ignored the boy because he thought he only wanted attention, the source said.
    • Robyn Allen

Can't you tell if someone is choking? I bet he was under a lot of distress... It isn't hard to tell...
  • An autopsy found the cause and manner of death were inconclusive, according to the Department of Children and Family Services.
    • Robyn Allen

But it just said he was choking... How could it be inconclusive?
  • Two months after Jordan died, Pierce allegedly raped and beat to death a neighbor, 17-year-old Mariah Edwards, then put her body in a garbage bag. Her remains have not been found, but police recovered a video from Pierce's computer of him allegedly having sex with her seemingly lifeless body.
    • Robyn Allen

And they still think the baby choking is accidental? I don't. This man is guilty no matter what.
  • There were 22 cellphone calls between Windom and Pierce before her death, the final seven pinging off a cell tower a block from Pierce's home, court records say. Pierce's DNA was found on her body, though he denied having sexual contact with her, records say.
    • Robyn Allen

I don't think it matters if he is denying it or not... It is pretty obvious it was him...
  • "They have nothing linking this guy to the murder," said attorney Nicholas Albukerk. "They have evidence linking him to the girls. That's a big difference."
    • Robyn Allen

It is pretty fishy if it wasn't him... Yeah... It was him. There is no doubt in my mind.
  • "If they had such a great case, wouldn't they have held him?" Albukerk said. "Do they always let murderers out of jail when they have such great evidence?"
    • Robyn Allen

He needs to be in jail. Now. He is a rapist and a murderer. His mother is covering for him and it isn't fair that there are so many innocent people in jail when this man who is obviously guilty is out! The only way he could be innocent is if he has someone following him and killing everybody Pierce meets! I highly doubt he does. He is sick and he is a psychopath and he needs to be locked up.

Jury convicts man in South Side rape - chicagotribune.com - 0 views

  • A former postal worker was found guilty Thursday in the abduction and rape of a 16-year-old girl on Chicago's South Side.
    • Seth Fahringer

Once you have a felony you can't work for the government right? Even as a postal worker?
  • A five-man, seven-woman jury found Tommie Naylor, 43, guilty of aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping and criminal sexual assault in the November 2008 attack.
    • Seth Fahringer

That took awhile to find out... Can you still prosecute someone if it isn't a murder charge this long after the crime was committed?
  • The three-day trial centered on testimony from the victim — now 18 — as well as testimony from two other girls that Naylor is charged with assaulting under similar circumstances. In all, he has been accused of kidnapping and raping five girls between 2003 and 2008.
    • Seth Fahringer

How did he get a job with the postal service if his criminal record was that? Even though he was just charged... I didn't think they postal service would hire him... Or do the resumes go through the government?

  • One victim, who was 16 at the time she was raped in 2006, testified she was standing at a bus stop on 75th Street on her way to a shopping mall in the middle of the afternoon when a man she later identified as Naylor suddenly grabbed her by the arm as he brandished a screwdriver.
    • Seth Fahringer

So would that be aggravated assault and rape? What would he get for something like this?
  • Judge Stanley Sacks scheduled a June 3 hearing on post-trial motions and for the four remaining sexual assault cases against Naylor.
    • Seth Fahringer

People like this make me sick... You always need to walk in groups. Always. Why didn't anyone notice he was doing tthis before? How can someone like this sleep at night? He is a sick twisted person and I hope he goes to jail for the rest of his life.
  • "He said, 'Get in the car or I will kill you,'" then drove her to a nearby alley and sexually assaulted her, she testified.

So this can mean one of two things. Either he was trying to break up a drug related exchange because he is a police officer or he was probably attempting to buy drugs and have a little fun on his vacation when it went wrong.

'Pill mill' doctor convicted of causing 4 deaths - US news - Crime & courts - msnbc.com - 0 views

  • A Chicago doctor accused of running a pill mill in an Appalachian county where painkillers are a public-health scourge was convicted Monday of illegal distribution and causing the death of four patients.
    • Michelle Perritt

That is completely rediculous that a doctor would do something to endanger his patients like that. I wonder how many doctors are crooked like he is.
  • The Drug Enforcement Administration considers Scioto County, where Volkman distributed the pills, one of the worst places for prescription painkiller abuse. Accidental drug overdoses driven by such addictions have surpassed car accidents as the leading cause of accidental death in Ohio.
    • Michelle Perritt

What kind of drugs did he give them? How did the police find out that it was this doctor? How much of the drug was prescribed?
  • 12 patients
    • Michelle Perritt

I think that it is a shame that they thought he killed 12 people but can only charge him with killing 4 of them. What about the families of the other 8 people?

  • Prosecutors alleged Fletcher had conspired with Volkman, and Drug Enforcement Administration records show that Fletcher filled painkiller prescriptions in 2009 for two people who died of overdoses the next day.
    • Michelle Perritt

Are these people overdosing because they become addicted to the drug and cant handle themselves or is it that the doctor told they to take more than they were supposed to?

Navy reverses itself on gay marriages on military bases - CNN.com - 0 views

  • The green light for gay marriage on military bases prompted a new round of Congressional opposition to ending Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

What led the navy to make this change when not having gay people in the armed forces used to be such a big deal?

Why would the training stop? I feel as though even though they are doing a good thing by making it such a big deal and talking about things like stopping training they're making it seem as though its a big event for people to be gay.

Captain Backs Pilot Who Kicked Muslims Off Plane - News Story - WSOC Charlotte - 0 views

  • "I can promise you the captain didn't throw those people off because of the way they were dressed. There's more to the story,” Ray said.
    • Steph Starr

I wonder what the rest of the story is then. You would think that if there WERE more to it, they would share the details so that it wouldn't look like such blatant racial profiling.
  • had a message from air traffic control. We don't know if he got a message from his corporate security people to take these people off
    • Steph Starr

If he had received this message, airport security would probably have come themselves and removed the individuals, and not let the pilot take care of a potentially dangerous situation.
  • If it turns out the pilot was not justified in putting the imams off the plane, his office will sue for negligence and a violation of civil rights.
    • Steph Starr

This makes me mad. If I were these two, I would definitely sue the pilot for violation of civil rights. I don't quite understand the negligence part, though. Wouldn't this count as one or those intentional torts?

  • passed multiple security clearances before boarding a Delta connection flight operated by Atlantic Southeast Airlines.
    • Steph Starr

Since they passed the requisite security clearances, is the pilot allowed to banish them from the plane like this? Since this is technically a business, can you refuse service to whomever you please?
  • They were even re-screened after they were pulled off the flight.
    • Steph Starr

This is so upsetting. Even after they were rescreened the pilot refused them. It definitely gives off the impression that the pilot is racist and that this is a case of racial profiling.

Florida boy, 16, charged as adult in double slaying of British men - CNN.com - 0 views

  • A 16-year-old boy has been indicted as an adult on charges of murdering two British men in Sarasota, Florida, police said Wednesday.
    • Davonta Covington

16 year olds are doing things these days that shouldnt be done. Like what reason would he do this to grown men? I think people need to figure out what reason young kids are doing things that they shouldnt have no business doing. Like he is 16 years old he should be enjoying being 16 and not killing people. This has to have an effect on him because he is killing at the age of 16.
  • Tyson will be tried as an adult and, if convicted of first-degree murder, could receive life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, Hollaway said.
    • Davonta Covington

This young kid had to have a reason to why he has killed 2 men at the age of 16. I think these men could have been doing something to him to cause him to do this type of thing. I wanna know why this young man killed 2 grown men. People dont look into that factor of this case.
  • The teen suspect lives near the crime scene, a police report said, and he had been arrested earlier in April on a charge of aggravated assault with a handgun.
    • Davonta Covington

If he lives right around that area then there has to be a problem with the 2 men that are dead. Being 16 doesnt mean they want to kill them for no reason to me. Location is a big factor in this.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • The two men were believed to be friends who recently graduated from college and were in Sarasota to celebrate.
    • Davonta Covington

So you mean to tell me he would kill his friends that he knows? No i dont think so, this really needs to get some other facts because no friends would murder each other. Just because he is 16 makes it more confusing to me.

3 Dead, 1 Injured in Shooting at California Home - FoxNews.com - 0 views

  • A shooting inside a home Saturday left three people dead, including the suspected shooter, after what investigators believe was a dispute among roommates, a police spokesman said.
    • Adam Mazurek

I wonder what the roommates were arguing about. What made the shooter snap and kill the three people?
  • Fairfield police received a call from a man inside the home shortly after noon reporting that he had been shot and that the shooter was firing at other people, said Officer Cleo Mayoral.
    • Adam Mazurek

Wow that is amazing! I can't believe he was able to call the police while the shooting was happening. I can't believe the shooter did not kill him. This man was very brave.
  • A third man, believed to be the shooter, was critically injured with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Mayoral said.
    • Adam Mazurek

So, I guess the shooter tried to kill himself?
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • "Officers have been there several times in the past involving disturbances," he said.
    • Adam Mazurek

I wonder what the other issues were with the roommates in the past. Were they as serious as this one?
  • Investigators were trying to determine the exact relationships between the victims and what may have caused the deadly altercation.
    • Adam Mazurek

Did they find anything that could have helped spark the shooting? Will charges be put on the man who survived the shooting?
  •
In Fairfield California, 3 roommates were shot and killed, the shooter was also killed. The person who was injured was shot in the foot, he was able to call the police while the shooting was taking place. The shooter was critically injured after he shot himself and later died at a hospital.
