Lorenzo Rosebaugh, a catholic priest, was killed in Guatemala in May of last year. Although the crime rate in Guatemala is very high, this killing brought new attention to crime and violence in Guatemala. Religion is very important to Latin American cultures, which makes this death stand out to society.The Guatemalan government needs to take steps to increase security and improve their leadership to help alleviate crime in their country. If the Government does not intervene and help the lives of their citizens, Guatemala could face a deleterious outcome.

over 10,000 Catholic and Christian Guatemalans protested their frustration over violence and drug abuse. Crime has increased drastically over the past year in Guatemala, with 6292 murders. Cardinal Quezada Toruno spoke to the protesters in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral in Guatemala and turned to god and social activism to help decrease violence and crime in Guatemala.

Indigenous groups of Guatemala are making efforts to pass a bill which will create a wave band or community radio stations. For indigenous cultures, which makes up 80% of the Guatemala population, the radio is the only form of expression through their own language. Community radio stations are vital for indigenous groups because many indigenous women are illiterate and the prominent forms of media are only carried out in Spanish. A lack of communication between indigenous cultures could result in death. If this bill is passed, it will give indigenous groups the opportunity to contribute to Guatemalan society and will help them gain free speech.

Venezuela has decided to ban "war porn" video games, which are held accountable for 10,000 deaths. Since Hugo Chavez came to power, civil violence has increased in Venezuela. Video Games are responsible for youth violence and alcohol fueled violence. Although the Government does not want to acknowledge the violence, they implemented a pedestrian 08 limit which they hope will control alcohol related violence and help consumers to think before they act.

Criminal Organizations in Brazil, Mexico, Columbia, El Salvador, and Guatemala have increased their power over the last decade, weakening political stability and democracy of Latin America. Surprisingly, the journalists who cover the crimes are their targets. the number of killings, attacks, and disappearances have increased causing the government to become unable to assure safety from the paramilitary gangsters in Brazil, guerillas in Colombia, and street gangs in El Salvador and Guatemala. As revenge, journalists are taking on self-censorship. Although the crime rate has decreased, the fight against crime requires domestic and international support. Better legal structure and diminishing criminal groups will help create independent media outlets.

Throughout Latin America, indigenous communities are losing their sense of tradition, stemmed from large established religious denominations and lesser known groups. While some churches focus on social concerns, others focus on spiritual concerns, creating a division between communities and families. The "sects" have taken on the role of dividing the people and lowering them to interests of the dominant powers. Anthropologists and religious leaders blame the sects for employing indigenous peoples with money and advertising beliefs that go against their way of life.

Latin American leaders are trying to prevent HIV in Latin America and the Carribean through sexual education and health promotion programs in schools. Childhood and adolescent years are the most important years of developing, therefore it is imperative to provide education on sexuality. The Costa Rican Government signed an agreement allowing leaders to educate 15-25 year olds on HIV and how to use a condom.

The election of Argentina's president sparked discussion on gender roles in Latin America. Gender issues and constraints have hurt Latin America economically. Although there has been an increase in women leaders, domestic violence and strict gender roles still exist.

In most of Latin America, abortions are a crime, but this does not decrease the amount of abortions that are performed. Criminalizing abortion has become increasingly dangerous, especially in an area where there is little sex education and women are kept from using contraception. Up to 5,000 women die each year and thousands are hospitalized.

Mexico has appointed a new attorney general, Felipe Calderon, with hope to protect the drug cartels. Unfortunately, Calderon's war on cartels has caused the death toll to reach 13,500. The population is very unhappy with the armed forces, who want more action against those who protect that cartels.

Guatemala has been struggling with a food shortage, which was declared "a state of calamity" on Tuesday. Thousands of families are extremely short of food due to the weather conditions. The government estimated about 400,000 families who are suffering, but hopefully with the 20 tons of nutritional cookies that the World Food Program distributes, the families will pull out of this calamity.

The Brazilian Government is starting to directly control oil extraction in order to put their global power status in place. Brazil hopes for Petrobas, a national oil company, to take control of the deep sea oil fields. Although Brazil is still struggling with poverty, illiteracy and inequality, they hope to increase their oil production to 5.7 million barrels a day by 2020.
