A review of _The Maid Narratives_ by Aaron W. Hughey, Department of Counseling and Student Affairs, Western Kentucky University. members of the local community. He points out the Bowling Green connection: attorney Flora Templeton Stuart (van Wormer's sister) who tells of her memory of Kentuckian Celestine Holmes. Called "Teen," Holmes was her nanny when Stuart grew up in New Orleans in the 1950s.

This page in particular celebrates Dr. Mary Britton, a prominent woman not only in civil rights, but also medicine and anti-lynching and segregation laws. She was the first female African American physician in Lexington and was a powerful influence for the State of Kentucky. She was active in the Woman's Improvement Club.

The Kentucky Historical Society has put together on this site the Oral History Project. They have recorded and transcribes stories from the Civil Rights Movement. They are all Kentuckians and is an excelling primary source regarding various topics that the interviewees discuss. I listen to Howard Bailey talk of what it was like to move from segregated color school to integrated school.
