Operation Ghost Click DNS servers to shut down in March - 4 views

  •
I think that it is kind of creative how, as a temporary solution to the problem, they converted the rogue DNS servers to legitimate DNS servers. I wonder if they used the actual servers or just their address.

Good question Brock. Which scenario do you think would prove more difficult? Do you think you can dig into this story to find out the answer? Do you think you can find someone who knows the answer and can say?
  •
I do not know exactly how IP addresses are distributed, but I think that they are somewhat randomly assigned, so I think that it might be harder to reassign the IP address to a new server than to use the actual servers, but I may be wrong. I do want to dig into it more. I think that the answer could probably be found on the Internet as to who IP addresses are assigned, and I plan on looking there for such information. I think that maybe, if I do not find the answer to this myself, I could ask you, Troy Harding, Tim Bower, or a classmate.

Hey Brock, you wrote this back in January. Do you know how IP addresses are distributed at this point in our class?
  •
I learned about DHCP as a method for dynamically assigning IP addresses to computers. However, I am not certain if the Internet uses them as well. I read some on the Internet about this, however.

The White House Is Now Taking Steps To Fight DDoS Attacks - 0 views

  •
Last month, attackers took down the PlayStation Network for several days, embarrassing Sony and leaving tons and tons of gamers unable to feed their Destiny addictions for almost a week. This is all thanks to what's called a Distributed Denial of Service attack, where a person or a group of people send an inflated amount of traffic to a network in hopes of overloading and crippling the servers.

It is a litte bit of an oudated article, and it has some specificity to Windows 2000 that I am not sure if applies to other operating systems, but other than that, the article seems to be very good.

Hackers used packet sniffers to filch credit card data - 4 views

An important lesson here. Physical security is crucial in an overal network security plan. Note that the hackers had to get access to the server room for this scheme to work.

To all those who are completely new to this stuff!

This article was extremely relevant for this class (as DNS servers are a part of Networking), and www.howstuffworks.com seems like a good website to obtain general information about various topics. Thank you for sharing this article.

I think everyone in our class should read this. It's a great explanation.

What Is DHCP? - 1 views

  •
"Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information such as the subnet mask and default gateway. RFCs 2131 and 2132 define DHCP as an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standard based on Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP), a protocol with which DHCP shares many implementation details." Western Digital's wireless backup drives get a better look and a better app - The Verge - 0 views

  •
This is more of a sponsored post/Ad than it is a real new story, but it is still interesting to see how personal storage is changing. These hard drives being sold by Western Digital are able to back-up local files and then allow those files to be accessed from anywhere, while still keeping your data off of the servers of a large company.
