Teaching all children to read in today's diverse classrooms requires a reading specialist in every school. Reading specialists provide expert instruction, assessment, and leadership for the reading program. With their advanced preparation and experience in reading, they are responsible for the literacy performance of all readers, in particular those who struggle.

Since 1987, the Young Adults' Choices project has developed an annual list of new books that will encourage adolescents to read. The books are selected by the readers themselves, so they are bound to be popular with middle and secondary school students. The reading list is a trusted source of book recommendations, used by adolescents, their parents, teachers, and librarians.

FROM THE SITE: The time is finally here for my annual list of favorite sites of the year.  This year, I decided to up my post to the top 100 instead of 25 due to the number of sites that I reviewed and due to the popularity of the post.  I tried to cover a wide range of sites, from flash card creators to digital storytelling and of course, social networks, which really shined in 2011.  I hope everybody enjoys the read and has as much fun reading it as I did creating it!

In this series of three posts, we aim to provide an overview of the ELA Common Core State Standards (ELA CCSS) to inform educators, parents, and community members about basic concepts and implementation. For more than two decades, IRA's professional standards have been used by policymakers, university and school administrators, teacher educators, and teachers at all levels to inform pre- and in-service teacher preparation and professional development and to guide professional practice.

Using Sound Gecko you can take an article from a website, paste its URL into Sound Gecko, and then listen to a reading of that article. The conversion isn't instantaneous, but it is relatively quick. You do have to enter an email address in order to get the MP3 file. To remove the copy and paste part of the process you can install the Sound Gecko Chrome extension."

Jerome Harste in "What Do We Mean by Literacy Now?" shares his thoughts about literacy informed by insights into "multiple literacies" and "literacy as social practice." He states that a good ELA program for the twenty-first century continues to be composed of three components -- meaning-making, language study, and inquiry-based learning.
