The role of the Reading Specialist - 0 views

  •
Teaching all children to read in today's diverse classrooms requires a reading specialist in every school. Reading specialists provide expert instruction, assessment, and leadership for the reading program. With their advanced preparation and experience in reading, they are responsible for the literacy performance of all readers, in particular those who struggle.

Young Adults' Choices - 0 views

  •
Since 1987, the Young Adults' Choices project has developed an annual list of new books that will encourage adolescents to read. The books are selected by the readers themselves, so they are bound to be popular with middle and secondary school students. The reading list is a trusted source of book recommendations, used by adolescents, their parents, teachers, and librarians.

- Top 100 Sites of 2011 - 0 views

  •
FROM THE SITE: The time is finally here for my annual list of favorite sites of the year.  This year, I decided to up my post to the top 100 instead of 25 due to the number of sites that I reviewed and due to the popularity of the post.  I tried to cover a wide range of sites, from flash card creators to digital storytelling and of course, social networks, which really shined in 2011.  I hope everybody enjoys the read and has as much fun reading it as I did creating it!

Introducing the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards - 0 views

  • In this series of three posts, we aim to provide an overview of the ELA Common Core State Standards (ELA CCSS) to inform educators, parents, and community members about basic concepts and implementation. In this first post, we will introduce the ELA CCSS and provide context to those who are new to the standards. In the second post, we will go into further detail on the key features of the ELA CCSS and discuss the opportunities that they provide. In the third post, we will take a look at how various states are starting to implement the standards.
  • For grades 6-12, the focus also includes Literacy in History/Social Studies and Literacy in Science and Technical subjects.
  • Technology is integrated throughout the CCSS rather than positioned in a stand-alone section.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • As stated in the ELA overview, the goal for students is "they are familiar with the strengths and limitations of various technological tools and mediums and can select and use those best suited to their communication goals (p.7)."

I believe this is a new piece that needs to be a source of discussion. The Tech team and classroom teachers are already beginning the process of delineating the ETSE standards by grade level.

Free Technology for Teachers: Use Sound Gecko to Listen to the Web - 0 views

"Sound Gecko is a free service that turns text articles into MP3 files. Using Sound Gecko you can take an article from a website, paste its URL into Sound Gecko, and then listen to a reading of that article. The conversion isn't instantaneous, but it is relatively quick. You do have to enter an email address in order to get the MP3 file. To remove the copy and paste part of the process you can install the Sound Gecko Chrome extension."
