MS, universities team up on gaming research | eSchoolNews.com - 0 views

"Microsoft's research arm is leading a new effort to study the use of computer games as tools to help middle-school students learn science and math. The Games for Learning Institute (G4LI) aims to identify which qualities of computer games engage students and help develop relevant, personalized teaching strategies that can be applied to the learning process, its organizers said. The G4LI is a joint research endeavor by Microsoft Research, New York University (NYU), and a consortium of universities. Partners include Columbia University, the City University of New York (CUNY), Dartmouth College, Parsons, Polytechnic Institute of NYU, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and Columbia Teachers College."

Digital Domain - Buy Now, Pay Later (Maybe With Your Allowance) - NYTimes.com - 2 views

"Systems like these - known in the industry as nurturing games - are built to require regular investments of time and, for fullest enjoyment, money. The games are usually hosted by social networks like Facebook, or can connect to such networks so friends can follow one another's progress. They feature living digital property - the crops in FarmVille or the fish in Happy Aquarium - that can die without care and feeding. At FooPets, death is averted because, after a short period of neglect, the pet goes to a FooShelter. (And reclaiming it becomes an expensive proposition.)"

Video of purported PlayStation Phone hits Web | The Digital Home - CNET News - 0 views

There is supposedly a new telephone that supports the Sony game playing experience coming out, running under the Android OS, found under the website Cnet.com. The main stakeholders here are those who look forward to a gaming telephone, so basically it can run from kids to adults that look for a phone with all this phones capabilities. This development will change the life of gamers who can now take a system that can work as a psp and a phone at the same, and also an mp3 player, picture taker, and other big upgrades to the psp, play station portable. The biggest impact is the development of a new Android phone. This phone combines game play and a cell phone all in one, and the quality of game play is much higher than all phones that have come out so far, which begs questions to be asked, will the phone, which runs under Android, have problems with battery time? Will it be able to have such good game play and be able to function as a fully functional phone, without lag time? If this phone fully functions as a gaming system and a phone, then there will definitely be success to the Android Company, and Sony as well, these two companies will thrive from the money that they will make. Since the phone functions as a computer, its processor is required to be high, especially since it will be playing video games, and the RAM must also be high. The processor and RAM, or random access memory, both define the speed and capability of this cell phone/gaming system. It all comes down to the specs and the scrutiny of the stakeholders, those who will be using this cell phone

    Try this little game
  •
This is a cute little game ms brownstone. I'm pretty sure its for little kids who don't really have the greatest common sense. I think it could actually be very helpful for these kids who are first starting to surf the internet and open up their first e-mail accounts. I remember in 3rd grade i created my first e-mail, and i would get these e-mails. I usually had the common sense to not open these spam emails. However, as a child, I did not know how smart the senders were and i got fooled once and it led to a virus on my computer. Luckily enough, my dad could fix anything, and got rid of the virus and everything seemed okay. This game could have really helped at that time. However, it is still good that you posted it for us (bsge tech students) to look at because it gives us an idea on games that teach lessons, which could be useful.

Video Game Helps Math Students Vanquish an Archfiend - Algebra - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
"This fall, New York City is rolling out Dimension M - M stands for math - in 109 middle schools across the five boroughs after trying the game out in two dozen schools, including I.S. 30, last year. Like a modern twist on "Jeopardy!," the fast-paced video game quizzes students on prealgebra and algebra topics ranging from prime numbers to fractions and complex equations. A correct answer brings 500 or more points, a wrong one as few as 25; the player with the most points wins. (No prizes, just glory.)"

Flames with names? That is the online question | online, world, real - Home - The Orang... - 2 views

"Last week, one of the world's most successful online gaming companies, Blizzard Entertainment of Irvine, told its global community of World of Warcraft players that they'd have to use real names in forums. The pushback was severe. The most outraged, as Register writer Ian Hamilton reported, lashed out by publishing online every public item they could find about Blizzard employees and, in some cases, their relatives."

Regulations and Security Concerns Hinder Asia's Move to Cloud Computing - NYTimes.com - 0 views

In this article it talks about how the organization known as "The Youth Olympic Games" were hosting their games in August. But they have done something different this year. Unlike what they have done every year, purchasing their items all the time and selling them or giving them away for free; they have now would have an third-world country who has the equipment do their job if they were to buy it. By that I mean they would used a system called "cloud services", and the group in charge of working would be Asia and they would have the data of everyone who is watching, performing and workers of the organization. Therefore these are the stakeholders in with this program that because they are having someone else from a different country; without knowing if they are someone who wants to steal their identity has full access. The IT system in this "cloud services" would be cloud computing since someone that may be from home, or sitting in an office has control over the organization and the data. The issue in this would be security, that because the people that are using "cloud services" are in Asia; therefore they are in a different having control in the U.S. The scenarios in this would be the fact that everyone identity would be stolen since the controls would be in Asia and they wouldn't be tracked since they are in a different country. They also couldn't be charged since they were given permission to have access to the data.

Take a look at this so-called "opt out" document presented to me online or in person when I was considering leasing a Volvo, a Toyota or a Mini Cooper. In each case, all three dealers were using the same form. I found that peculiar in itself. As you read the form, what tricks are being played on the consumer? Can you identify any semantic games being played to confuse and deceive?
