Copyright Awareness, Partnerships, and Training Issues in Academic Libraries - 0 views

  •
Abstract: This article reports on the results of a national survey of academic librarians and library staff (N=226) in the United States about their awareness of various copyright policies, partnerships with campus groups to address copyright issues, and training needs. A majority of the survey respondents reported that they have answered copyright-related questions in the workplace, yet only 49% (n=98) of the respondents perceived they were prepared to provide copyright information to library users. Awareness of various copyright policies among librarians and staff members varied, including a reported minimal awareness of the T.E.A.C.H. Act. In addition, survey respondents expressed the desire for more copyright-related training. In light of these findings, the present study extends the existing literature and offers recommendations to help better prepare a "copyright confident" or "copyright responsive" academic library workforce.

Knowledge Level of Library Deans and Directors in Copyright Law - 1 views

  •
INTRODUCTION Copyright law is an increasingly important aspect of managing an academic library. This study investigated the copyright knowledge level of academic library deans and directors and their perceptions of how it affects their abilities to oversee the development and enforcement of copyright-related library policies. The perceived adequacy of the copyright training currently available in library schools was also examined. METHODS A random sample of academic library deans and directors was asked to complete a web-based survey articulating their level of copyright knowledge and perceptions associated with how they are able to apply it toward their work with policies. RESULTS Respondents scored a mean of 77.49% on ten questions of basic copyright law concepts. A majority of deans and directors indicated they believe their knowledge, as well as that of those working under their supervision, is adequate to make informed decisions. However, almost 90% of the respondents were either neutral or disagreed that library school programs are providing adequate training in copyright law to academic librarians

Hi Mark, Really interesting area that you are studying. Simulation-based medical teaching seems to make sense but apparently the issue relates to cost. As someone who knows little about medical training outside what I watch on TV shows, I would be interested to know how integrated simulation already is in medical training vs practice on real patients? . It would appear that simulation if expensive would be an area where several institutions might wish to collaborate in order to maximize the use of the equipment and technology. Is that realistic?

Major Copyright Is sues in Academic Libraries: Legal Implications of a Digital Environm... - 1 views

  •
This paper provides an overview of some of the major copyright issues for libraries in a digital environment. It explores how statutory and case law determine the path libraries must take to accomplish their mission. Copyright law is complex and ambiguous. It poses many challenges for librarians, but it is crucial that librarians have a basic understanding of the various provisions of the law in order to make informed decisions. However, the law is only one part of the equation. The interpretation of the law by the courts must also be constantly evaluated for potential impact to libraries.

CORAL: Implementing an Open-Source ERM System. . - 0 views

  •
The presenters focused on the benefits and challenges of implementing an open-source electronic resource management (ERM) system called Centralized Online Resource Acquisitions and Licensing (CORAL) at their libraries. Originally developed by the University of Notre Dame's Hesburgh Libraries, CORAL offers libraries the option to reorganize ERM workflows and collect information about their electronic resources into one central place without having to commit funding for new software from the ever-shrinking library budget. CORAL currently includes four modules: Organizations, Resources, Licensing, and Usage Statistics. In addition to the challenges that are faced in any ERM system implementation, such as collecting and preparing data and training staff, issues specific to using an open-source application in an academic library were presented.w:

The challenges of teaching with technology: from computer idiocy to computer competence - 0 views

  •
This article examines whether teachers properly utilize technology in their classrooms, despite their level of technological competency, and how to better prepare teachers to use technology in the classroom. First, this study found that teachers are often not properly taught how to teach with technology and, as a result, often do not properly implement technology into their classrooms. It was then found that teachers who went through "hands-on activities in a collaborative, non-threatening environment", such as schooling or professional development training, on how to better understand and utilize technology within the classroom became more comfortable with technology and almost unanimously moved towards using it within their classrooms.

Finally, although still facing a struggle, the value of the older employee is realized. Knowledge and history of a position can bring extra efficiency to continue the process or evaluating it for change. Knowing why things were done a certain way aids in solutions for the future and potential increased value to a particular unit or department. Older works shouldn't be dismissed because they lack the perfect tech skill. They should be trained and assisted to succeed as any other employee of value.

5 Ways to Help Your Aging Workforce Embrace Digital Transformation - 1 views

Baby boomers and the aging employee need encouragement and the incentive to speak up and present all that they have to offer. Older workers feel an uncomfortable sense at most work ventures and yet they are relied upon greatly due to their knowledge and expertise on the history of a work related matter. It needs to be understood that in a era of fast paced advances in technology we all need training and innovative ways to learn. It is not necessary just the older employees that might struggle without such a way of approaching the subject of change.
