Life in a 21st-Century English Class - 3 views

  • To begin with, I don’t lecture. My students don’t take notes, at least not in the traditional sense, and we don’t read a novel and simply answer the questions.
  • It also means my students don’t acquire knowledge just for the sake of acquiring it. They need to do something with it — that’s where “project-based” comes into play.
  • Finally, technology is embedded into the structure of all we do. It’s part of how we research, how we capture information, and how we display our learning. It’s never an accessory tacked on at the end.

  • One of the most important things we can do is teach our students how to use social media wisely, and how social media can be used for social good.
  • Instead, inquiry and technology are a natural part of our English classes. It’s what my students have come to expect and have started to design themselves.  Instead, of saying, “hand in your assignments,” I say, “publish your assignments and send me the link.” They think about connecting and sharing their learning in the larger world.

I have this saved to read later. I am interested in how she transformed her classroom.

I found this post very interesting. It is easy to see how PBL may work in a science or math classroom, but I have always wondered how it would look for English. It seems like this teacher has truly grasped PBL, and her students are enjoying the learning process. I think this resource could be utilized by any teacher who instructs about English content, but depending on the age of the learners, the students may not reach full autonomy as those in this article did. I particularly enjoyed one quote from the teacher, "Finally technology is embedded into the structure of all we do... It's never an accessory tacked on at the end." As we have learned about in other EdTech courses, technology needs to truly transform the learning experience. I believe the teacher is doing that in this classroom.

This Blog is one that I have bookmarked and will coming back to. This teacher's description of her class is how I want to work to make my class to look like. She had her premise but she had been able to create a class based on inquiry, openness and trust. This empowers students to create a social media campaign, create their own curriculum, and at the same time become more advanced in the content. Ms. Barseghian, I'm gushing, but your class sounds inspirational and worth the gushing.

There are a lot of resources here for all classrooms, teachers, and students. It is divided up into 14 different categories and everything that I've looked at is free to your classroom. I've been searching for a few resources, such as a good audio-to-speech converter and some better graphics organizer sites. I typically have students create a end of the semester portfolio that documents all of their learning and their final products in various categories and I can see how sites like Cacoo, Organizely, and Popplet could really help me out.

This is a great resource to use in educating yourself on information about digital storytelling in the classroom. You can use this to learn information about it and why it should or should not be used in the classroom. It is a good idea to know the benefits and downsides to any resource we are using in the classroom
  •
The two extra resources I found were in correlation to my final topic I am writing about in this class, digital storytelling! If you have any resources related this topic, please share!

Students Who Make Apps @coolcatteacher - 0 views

  • Students can program apps. They can pitch their ideas. They can handle defending their dreams. Students can code. Students can create. Those who think students can’t do these things either haven’t tried or have a limited view of themselves as educators.
  • App programming with Crescerance has been awesome since I first learned about it from fifth grader Kennedy and from Susan Bearden at ISTE 2014.
  • Want to know more about our Shark Tank event this past spring? Here’s our wiki page on the event.
  •
Evidence of students programming their own apps. While I can't teach them how, I can encourage them. Hoping to use this in AP to develop a program for building a city.

7 Benefits You'll Notice When You Start Learning to Code - 7 views

  • Learning to code has made it into the mainstream, meaning that anyone can learn - you just need concentration, patience, and diligence. I did it, and so can you.
  • It’s been shown that learning to code can help you do better in other subjects that you’re studying or learning. Within programming, you learn how to break down a problem into individual steps and to use a language that the computer understands to logically create a working program.
  • A key area of your life important in growth is a successful career. Learning to code helps achieve that through many avenues and opportunities.

  • Financial success is an important goal for many, and learning to code can have a significant impact there. No matter what your career, profession, or background; programming skills are useful.
  • 7 Benefits You'll Notice When You Start Learning to Code
  •
This article would be beneficial to share with teachers so that they know the benefits of teaching students to code. Coding in the classroom has long range benefits that could lead to students having many options in their future careers. Additionally sharing this article with students would show them that while coding is fun; they are also working on developing skills that can help them in the present and future.
  •
I really like this resource. I will definitely be looking at this as I get ready to write my final paper. This is different from all of the other articles that I have seen because it is not directly related to coding with students. I could see how this could be beneficial for a young professionals group all the way up to a senior citizen center.
  •
It's interesting how all of these things connect with coding. As a computer science major I can see how all of these can be impacted by coding, yet I never thought of them. After reading this article I definitely can look back and see this occurring through out the past two years!

ISTE | 7 steps to starting a global collaboration project - 3 views

This site shows some simple ways of being able to start global collaborating in your classroom. My favorite advice is to pick something you are passionate about.

Hi Sara! This is a great article that I think will be helpful for what I've chosen for my final project for Dr. Z's class which I hope to utilize in my own classroom. The last point in the article was really relateable for me, especially with the global collab project we just completed. It is important to realize that in a project like this, not everything can be controlled. I also really enjoyed the point about asking your students if they are comfortable with it. I think that we all experienced some discomfort in our project, so making sure students of a younger age are okay talking to strangers would be incredibly important.
  •
Hi! Thank you so much for sharing! I think that global collaboration projects are an amazing opportunity for kids to be able to participate in. It's amazing how much technology can do for us. I can't wait for the future generations to become adults :) What a different world it will be!
  •
    1. I agree that this could be used in my own future classroom -- but it would be contingent on finding the right topic and group to collaborate with. 2. I think that the resource is mostly for teacher use as it provides an overview and tips/tricks for teachers. 3. Other resources that might want to be considered are the different websites shared by Dr. Z during class.
  •
I agree that this could be used in a classroom. This can be a good way to help students better understand a topic that they are learning at that time. I feel though it would be more for the teacher usage for a younger age. I feel that a global collaboration might be difficult for elementary students unless they work with anyone older than them in their district. Otherwise, I feel it would be a good experience for older students as well.

Canva - Amazingly simple graphic design - 2 views

While still in closed Beta this will be an awesome tool for teachers and students!

Wow Ryan! This looks like an awesome resource once it gets going! I think that this could be a wonderful tool in getting students creating their own graphic design images, etc. I think that this could be used by both teachers and students! Teachers could use this to create material for the classroom, etc., and students can create images for projects, school organizations, etc. It seems similar to Animoto (animoto.com), which allows you to easily create video/slideshows on the web. Great resource!
  •
Thank you for sharing this resource, I had no idea something like this was out there! I'm going to try messing around with Canva and see if I can make some new designs for my blog since I'm just using default Blogger templates now. I love how simple it looks and I can see how it would be easy for students and non-techie people to use. I can also see myself actually being able to produce some of my own posters for my classroom as well.
  •
Ryan I had never heard of Canva! This looks cool and I feel would be a great tool for students and teachers, like you said. This seems like it could really have students and teachers getting creative and sharing that with each other!
  •
Ryan- Thank you for introducing this brand new tool. It looks like an app that can be used by both teachers and students. This is one I would like to stay up to date with so that I can give it a try when it releases for use.
  •
Canva is a great tool. I have used this tool in my classroom. We used Canva's Snapchat filter template to create filters for our school. This tool is great for students to express their creative side. The one downfall I have seen with Canva is that some of their features are premium and that leaves a watermark on the final project.
  •
This seems like a really cool resource Ryan!
  •
I am a big fan of Canva! I taught my 4th grade students how to use it last year. They continue to use it for projects, tasks, and assignments. They have a hard time finding free graphics on the site, though. Luckily, they are also good at finding and inserting their own :)

Climbing Up the Leaderboard: An Empirical Study of Applying Gamification Techniques to ... - 7 views

Gamification of a classroom requires dedication. These kind of studies just blow my mind. Great resource to learn a bit more about gamification and student engagement.
  •
I think that I can definitely use this resource in my classroom once I feel more confident at gamification because leaderboards is something that I struggle with. I don't want students to feel down about where they are at but I also want students to feel proud of their accomplishments. It is so interesting to me that a student will work so hard to complete a level or to be on the top when they are so frustrated. They are truly persevering through the difficulties.
  •
Thanks for sharing Dave. I never seem to get tired of reading about gamification. It's so interesting. I definitely think that this can be used as a resource for teachers.
  •
Gamification is very unique inside of a classroom now that I have a better idea on what it is. I feel that it fits perfectly inside of a classroom because it gives the room a whole new look. It can be beneficial for both teacher and student because the teacher can use the game to help get the students attention and help better their learning. Then the students can use it to help with their learning and become more engaged to what they are being taught and having it be put into a fun way of learning.
