Self-assessment tests at the start of class measure how well they understand the material.     The shift from 'sage on the stage' to 'guide on the side', while it has served an important function in shifting the focus from the teacher to the learner, does not capture the fullness of the implications of this shift. We have been hearing about the importance of 'lifelong learning' for some time now in formal education. If, as Bauman asserts, 'unlearning' will be as important to social success in the 21st millennium as learning has been in the 20th millennium, then the habit of 'lifelong learning' will need radical re-thinking in terms of the nature and purposes of pedagogical work. Put simply, we will need to see a further shift from sage-on-the-stage and guide-on-the-side to meddler-in-the-middle (McWilliam, 2005).

    Other ideas come to mind when thinking of how Hangouts can be used in school administration: a school's technology help desk can leave a Hangout open all day to allow teachers and students to jump in and out as needed with questions, and an admissions office can offer online panel discussions for perspective parents and students (especially good for boarding schools where families may not be local).

      I have actually also heard this stated by public school children (and parents) in the form of "my taxes pay your salary". This is not an independent school thing alone...

Far better, one might argue, to access efficiently what you need, when you need it. This depends, of course, on building up a sufficient internalized structure of concepts to be able to link with the online store of knowledge. How to teach this is perhaps the greatest challenge and opportunity facing educators in the 21st century.
