Student engagement is something really important to me as an educator and a school leader. High engagement equates to higher student outcomes. Although I'm not sure on the research behind this, I'm not surprosed to see technology high on the list. Definitely worth a read for all teachers (current and future).

A video doing the rounds in which a US high school student complains bitterly about the teaching approach used. i.e. hand out packets, read. He wants the teacher to teach, to engage the students. A lesson there about what's acceptable teaching strategies. But more broadly, there's a lesson here about the spread of smart phones with video. What happens in your classroom can be recorded and made public.  The classroom may not be as private as you think. A typical knee-jerk response may be to ban the use of device. What are the chances of that actually working? How well has it worked in schools today? What about using these tools as part of student learning?

Mohamed El-Ashiry takes a look at four online tools that have helped him deliver high-quality feedback to his students.Upon introducing tablets into my classroom, the biggest gains I have received have been in assessment and feedback. In my experience, ICT tools facilitate the process of giving timely, relevant and effective feedback to my students.

A very high level overview.  It's not that engaging or interesting and remains focused on safety without extending into how to contribute to society, but has some useful resource links.  Including similar suggestions for kindegarten and year 2 (US context)

While a bit of a laugh, the last paragraph touches on something a little more serious in terms of the potential for unintended consequences.

An example of what "kids today" can produce with technology. Two 13/14 year olds produce a fantastic interactive resource for understanding/visualising the scale of the universe.

The first, of hopefully many, images bookmarked as part of an activity in the ramble for week 4 of EDC3100. When observing and teaching high school mathematics classes while on professional experience, one of the strongest impressions I had was the sense of disconnection felt by the students. A strong disconnection between their current and future lives and what they were learning in mathematics.
