Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have recently gained a groundswell of interest, becoming a significant research area for many scholars around the globe. One of the reasons for this surge is that nature of ICT has greatly changed the face of education. For most European countries, the use of ICT, in education and training, has become a priority during the last decade; however, very few have achieved progress. Indeed, only a small percentage of schools, in a few countries, effectively used ICT to support and change the teaching and learning process in diverse subject areas. Others are still in the early phases of adopting ICT.

Socrative lets teachers engage and assess their students with educational activities on tablets, laptops and smartphones. Through the use of real time questioning, instant result aggregation and visualization, teachers can gauge the whole class' current level of understanding. Socrative saves teachers time so the class can further collaborate, discuss, extend and grow as a community of learners.

Socrative is a fun way to engage students with either polls or quizzes. I use it for vocabulary instruction primarily but if they have a device it makes it easier for them to all participate.

In this video, Patrick Halpin, Donabate-Portrane Educate Together National School, shows how he uses Photostory with 4th class. Working in groups, the pupils create a photostory presentation on how to create origami flowers. They will use this presentation to teach origami to junior classes.

I like working on Photostory and it's really a great software that can help in encouraging children in their story writings.

Hi Florian, we have been using Photostory with Year 3 and Year 4's (7 - 9 years olds) for a couple of years. It's such a fantastic publishing tool and so easy to use with lovely animations and music. Thanks for sharing.

A simple online tool for creating book covers. My grade Prep and 1 (Australia) students use this with few difficulties. The Book Cover Creator is designed to allow users to type and illustrate front book covers, front and back covers, and full dust jackets. Students can use the tool to create new covers for books that they read as well as to create covers for books they write individually or as a class.

I started using it in newsletters for parents as a way of grabbing their attention for key piece of information. It struck me how useful this would be as a way for children to summarise concepts, learning etc in one frame. Quite sure this is a site everyone is very familiar with already, but just in case...

It's a free visual bookmarking tool. It helps you compile and organise sites under a specific topic. You can share your symbaloo with your students and help them navigate only on specific sites rather than the whole web. You can also add ready-made webmixes by other teachers.
