'Teaching as a Design Science' by Diana Laurillard - 20 views

  •
Teaching is changing. It is no longer simply about passing on knowledge to the next generation. Teachers in the 21st century, in all educational sectors, have to cope with an ever-changing cultural and technological environment. Teaching is now a design science. Like other design professionals - architects, engineers, town planners, programmers - teachers have to work out creative and evidence-based ways of improving what they do. But teaching is not treated as a design profession. Every day, teachers design and test new ways of teaching, using learning technology to help their learners. But their discoveries remain local. By representing and communicating their best ideas as structured pedagogical patterns, teachers could develop this vital professional knowledge collectively. Teacher professional development has not embedded in the teacher's everyday role the idea that they could discover something worth communicating to other teachers, or build on each others' ideas. Could the culture change? From this unique perspective on the nature of teaching, Diana Laurillard argues that a 21st century education system needs teachers who work collaboratively to design effective and innovative teaching.

I never thought of it this way. It's a great concept. We need to understand that design is not about beauty, but about vision, about following a process and always trying to make a dent. And of course, this will only be achieved by the use of crowd wisdom and the sharing process.
  •
Teaching by design is an interesting way to contemplate the way we teach. I suppose, I am always designing bridges to each and everyone of my students. One student understands the concept given in a traditional manner while the other needs to walk up the hill and see it from afar. Either way I have to figure out how to get my student to understand.
  •
True......even i did not think of it this way!!yes even i now think teaching is now a design science. With technology changing every day, we as teachers will have to think of new ways to use the new tools and as individual isolated teachers we wont be able to keep pace and do justice so we all will have to share and work collaboratively to design innovative ways to teach effectively.
  •
Dear Diana, I can't agree more on your proposals. In fact the peer2peer learning that we propose and expect from children in class has to become a MUST between teachers. I am not a teacher but I have experienced hoy there is Little sharing between teachers of same "level" of education in same school, almost NO dialog between those of different levels, and scarcely any between other teachers. How to rebuild this communication is crutial, and not only between heads and teachers but also upon other school staff, which sometimes get more information about each child environment and learning attitude than teachers or tutors themselves because they do see students in "non directed" situations react to real life problems.
  •
You are so right. One thing I like about the school I work with is the enthusiasm some teachers have for finding new tools. Some of us work collaboratively and it makes a real difference. Unfortunately this is not the case with the whole school, but I believe there will come a time when this will be the only way to work. Thanks for sharing!
  •
Thank you for Diana for your thought inspiring article. I think that the teachers who understand and master this 'design science' are really going to use ICT to leverage their teaching and their students learning. Institutes will probably need mature 'innovators' to drive the concept of 'design scientists' forward. In addition i believe we will also need a 'design artist' to create a ICT learning culture within the organization too.
  •
Thank you for sharing as a new person to the Teaching Profession I found collaborating efforts have worked really well for me and I am always willing to learn from others and share my ideas with them to get their input and it have proven fruitful. Working as a team and sharing with others to get a different point of view is always important.
  •
In my opinion the most important thing is -given teaching will be treated as a collective design science- learning about how to apply new ways of teaching on our individual children. The newest would probably not always be the best and what worked in other schools elsewhere might not work in your own school. So let´s also stress how to individualize collective knowledge again and break it down to everyday usable teaching aid that we can evaluate.
  •
I totally agree with your opinion about education, specially when you talk about collaborative work among teachers to help our students build knowledge .THank you

As a fan and enthusiastic user of IT in classes, I have just started a course: ICT in Primary Education: Transforming children's learning across the curriculum. It is a free course at www.coursera.org I will start recording some tools available online. Take a look at them and free your imagination to use them in your lessons.

Just started an ICT course from Coursera. It has made me jump from one exciting resource link to another before I could even finish the first activity! Absolutely loving it! I look forward to testing some of the ideas with my 6 yr old who is quite excited about technology. And as a parent I feel good if that gadget time is put to good use.
  •
5th week already. A good experience so far. Comprehensive materials indeed.

Hello to all! I have been absent from the field of primary education for some time and feel the need to update myself in new knowledge and new ideas, in such a fast paced world. I hope this course helps me!
  •
Hi, Our school is starting it's third week of Online curriculum, after the government has closed schools. Using Google Classroom has been interesting. Too much screen time for some pupils - headaches for my wife and I looking at screens without adequate breaks. I am looking forward to the course.

This looks great! With a special educational set of images too. I use too much words in my slides and creating a video will certainly get me away from words and focus on the flow of the story I want to tell.
  •
This looks amazing, I'll try to use it. It would be nice to use it to share a story with the students since some struggle to understand only by listening. Thank you for sharing this with us.
  •
An amazing tool to create more interesting videos and slides enhencing students into the topic. It looks pretty easy to use, it is kind of similar to powtoon but it looks easier.
  •
this is great! i cant wait to try it with my class.
  •
I'm going to try this. Usually, for online learning I will make my own presentation and then do a screen recording on the Mac which records your voice at the same time. A more fun, interactive presentation may help the students pay closer attention.
  •
Thanks for sharing. I've always thought that kind of video is very visually appealing for students. I'll definitely explore MySimpleShow! It could be used to explain difficult topics in a simple way.

Connect With Students and Parents in Your Paperless Classroom | Edmodo - 21 views

I use Edmodo in my school too and it is a great tool to communicate with students and parents, share resources with other teachers, assess, provide feedback... There are many things to do there!
  •
Edmodo was used in my previous school, it's like a learning-based version of facebook. Teachers can post links and videos for students to do their study at home, and it's easy for teachers to check on each student's progress and response rate.
  •
I use it regularly too in my classes. I post useful links for students , videos we watch in the class, reinforcements, etc
  •
Awesome tool, will need whole school approach though which may be difficult for government schools and or third world countries where these platforms or use of technology is only made available at privileged school and rarely at home.
  •
awesome too. Our school is using a different app but I would like to try this especially for my own school to see how it works with my teachers and students.
  •
I love it! I think it's a way of making parents close to what happen at class, as well as an amusing way of creating a relation with the students, it's not the conventional and serious way to which I am used to. I'll use it for sure.
  •
I have used Edmodo and it is a very good application to share content with the students, you can share websites links interesting for them. Besides, students can share too.
  •
A great and safe tool to use with students, in my case due to the Quarantine situation, we had to move on to E-learning so quick with 7 - 8 years old students, the platform is ideally for older students but Edmodo helped a lot to keep a direct communication with students/parents in a safe online environment.
  •
It is a great tool to bring the learner, teacher and parent all three community and make the learning happen in a wholesome way. Learners being able to work on feedforwards from the teachers and peer feedback can be implied here.

I've heard of this software many times but haven't tried it yet. It must be very creative! It's time I started using it with my students!
  •
I've already installed it on my tablet but couldn't find time to explore. That's what I'm going to do next. Thank you!
  •
I have my students use this as a choice for book reports. It is a great choice for some of those creative thinkers, and it is amazing how much time/work they put into it.
  •
I have read good reviews about bitstrips earlier too, seems a good tool for primary students, a nice way to introduce them to writing stories. Will try it!!!!!

super heros and super powers as well as evil characters are a good way to teach values to chilren and develop storytelling, focuss ideas, etc. I find visual thinking very good for early learning and being able to make comics is great. Thanks for sharing.

This tool is amazing if you use google drive to send and receive files from your students Doctopus gives teachers the ability to mass-copy (from a starter template), share, and manage grading and feedback for student projects in Google Drive. Its tentacles copy and "hand out" Drive files to a roster of students, giving teachers full control over starter template, sharing configuration, folder organization and file naming, as well as visibility over all work in progress -- including the ability to bulk revoke and revert student editing rights around submission deadlines.

This is a great tool to use. My kids really enjoy it. When we were doing the PYP Exhibition 25 out of the 27 children in my class chose to do their reflections on padlet, so much easier to mark than taking 27 books home.
  •
I have just mentored a group through their PYP exhibition, if I had known of Padlet then it would have been great. Thanks for the idea, excellent tool for collaboration.
  •
Yes I also love using 'Padlet'. It's so versatile and effective. We will be using this tool later on in our MOOC "ICT in Primary Education.

Discover an endless library of free books, picture books, & poetry or use simple tools to create books in minutes. Storybird is a creative community where readers & writers celebrate storytelling. This resource provides beautiful illustrations to act as a stimulus for teaching writing. You can work from a single image with drag and drop words to create a poem, put together a selection of pictures which are grouped by style or theme for you and use them to write a picture book, or create a more challenging longer format for older kids. The books can then be saved and read by other class members.

hey, i loved storybird.com! Thanks for sharing. I have always loved to read and write. This is going to be a great writing resource for my primary class.
