    no, actually I just came across this few days ago and still trying to understand the idea.. that we need a new coordinating system is beyond dispute, however if Poiu has anything of value to add to the debate I am not sure, will do some more research..

  • When I learned that Mark Zuckerberg effectively argued that 'the age of privacy is over' (read: ReadWriteWeb), I wanted to scream. Actually, I did. And still am. The logic goes something like this: People I knew didn't used to like to be public. Now "everyone" is being public. Ergo, privacy is dead. This isn't new. This is the exact same logic that made me want to scream a decade ago when folks used David Brin to justify a transparent society. Privacy is dead, get over it. Right? Wrong!

    David Brin has it right, if right means that we'll all have to give up a great deal more of our privacy - Internet, planes, personal ID (openID), credit cards, et al., - can you think of an area of life that has become more private in the last 10 years?

    I think the key here is that we cannot believe that this is acceptable or inevitable. 9/11 allowed the US government to remove freedoms with the consent of the population based on their fear. "Those who trade freedom for security deserve neither" (forget the source of that quote, don't feel like looking it up, shouldn't a bot do that for me as soon as I put quotes in?) While I doubt they are this sophisticated, if the militant theocracies who control their populations wanted to destroy the freedoms americans had and make the US more like themselves, they have been winning this war with our consent. There are powerful forces destroying our privacy and freedom. It is time to wake up before the frog gets boiled. Sorry gotta go, black helicopter landing in backyard

    you guys may want to take another look at Brin. I believe his observation is that privacy is going away (has actually been gone for a while). the question he poses is who will have access and control of the surveillance systems. he is advocating that we ALL do rather than centrally controlled organizations.

    his book is on my shelf, my wife started reading it but stopped as she found it too depressing - it will likely be right up my alley - if we accepted the premise that we would be in a surveilled state then it would be enormously helpful that it was a commons- I do not accept that we should allow this surveilled state to happen, nor that we should accept it as good, even if it is a commons. I also don't believe that it will be a commons. It should not exist, and should be fought every step of the way by people whose minds have not opened so far that their brains have fallen out. It is completely possible with technology to give individuals the power to set levels of privacy to particular counter parties. It is politically possible to regulate the use of surveillance. One can make the argument that people can simply surveil with their camera phones, but you do not see that happening as it would be culturally unacceptable (rude if you will). I find the acceptance of big brother as inevitable troubling.

    It looks like even Nova has realized now the futility of his "project". It makes me think that he is more on the side of experimentation and pushing boundaries that actually developing anything substantial. One of the things I've been taught in my work is that the difference between dreamers and doers is that dreamers never stop dreaming. Doers know when to take the dream, flesh it out and make it into something that works. Nova is a dreamer, and has left a wake of half-baked thoughts behind him as he continues to seek the next "thing", having lost interest in the last "thing" he experimented with. There are a lot of once-promising ghost towns that have been cooked up and discarded that trail behind him like the chains on Dickens' ghost of Christmas past. Earthweb, NVention, Lucid, Radar, Twine. All flittering bubbles of inspiration that never grew up, and/or were abandoned by the dreamer just short of success. I think we've already glimpsed the "future" as Nova sees it, and I for one have learned that what ever his future is, I don't want to participate.

    I think Nova has contributed greatly, and will continue to do so. His gifting is not in finishing, but in starting - starters and finishers are seldom the same person. What is unusual here is that a starter is given large amounts of capital but the vc's don't know enough to pair him with a finisher. One of my business partners said a business needs a dreamer, a doer and a sob. To which I asked, so that makes you.....? T2 is based on what I know of it (unless they've come up with some scaling algorithm, which isn't a product, and should be sold based on the patent to MS or google) fails on differentiation, and is entering a market against formidable incumbents. Hence Nova's thoughts that the next 'google' needs to differentiate itself further are actually quite valid. If I were Nova's vc on T2 I would pull the plug. Never talk about your next project.

    Not so long ago, in fact just a couple years ago, Twine (T1) was far ahead of the competition in the area of interest networking (building of communities around interests). I think Nova and T1 really did a good job in *pioneering* the idea that social networking should not just focus on people connecting to each other but rather on the topics that people share an interest for. For some reasons, Twine did not try to stay ahead in this field and didn't integrate improvements that seemed quite obvious. I would have liked to see T1 evolve towards real semantic tagging, connecting Twine tags and topics to linked data entities. I would have liked to see a T1 with stronger collaborative filtering: even the "like" button that was - i believe - introduced by FriendFeed, is now everywhere, except on Twine... I don't think that what Nova is discussing here has much to do with T2, just like I don't think that the semtweet project that he tweeted about a couple weeks ago has much to do with T2 either. I agree that so far Nova has been a dreamer, an inventor, more than a "doer", but I still like to check what he is dreaming about. Sometimes his dreams seem very deep and interesting: I don't find the current T2 dream (faceted search based on Apache-Solr technology) very exciting, unless something big comes out of it with respect to RDF. I am not that excited either about Semtweet, unless again it brings along something big with respect to RDF. And now Nova is sharing some new thoughts about some new user-machine interaction that wouldn't be based on search but on something else... I agree it's still pretty vague and not very convincing yet...

Today, Evri is announcing that it will be acquiring Radar Networks, along with its core technical team and its main product, Twine. Rumors surfaced yesterday on ReadWriteWeb that Evri was being acquired, but that is not the case. Evri is the acquirer. I spoke with both CEOs this morning. They would not disclose the terms of the deal, but it is safe to assume that it was largely an equity-based transaction. Both Evri and Radar Networks share Paul Allen’s Vulcan Capital as their largest shareholder. Radar has raised $24 million in total capital, while Evri has raised $8 million. (At least that is what has been publicly disclosed. Paul Allen has poured much more money into Evri almost single-handedly, perhaps even more than Radar raised). Radar was unable to raise more during the recession and kept pushing out the release of its next product, T2, an ambitious project to create a semantic index of the Web. Using this semantic index, T2 can do a better job understanding what each Web page it indexes is about.

    I've begun to use it to do lots of Search. I find it to be a much more interesting experience with great results over Google. I think the Evri + Twine result is a terrific match and will provide others some of the semantic tools to build onto the semantic web.

    Good to know, Jack. Please share if you find good examples of such searches with "great results over Google". Today I seem to have problems signing in (with Chrome - but it works with Firefox), so I suppose they are making some changes. I'm having some problems with the collections: can't find how to create a new collection or edit an existing one. Have you been using collections yet? Do they work for you?

      Not sure I agree with this. In the Village paradigm, authority (reputation) remains important. Village paradigm extends (doesn't replace) the Library paradigm
  • We demonstrate that there is a large class of subjective questions — especially longer, contextualized requests for recommendations or advice — which are better served by social search than by web search. And our key finding is that whereas in the Library paradigm, users trust information depending upon the authority of its author, in the Village paradigm, trust comes from our sense of intimacy and connection with the person we are getting an answer from.

    I think they are referring more to the kind of question. A query like "who is the oldest living American president?" is best suited for a Library paradigm, whereas a question like "is the current president of the US doing a good job in repairing the economy?" is really more of a village paradigm. I most likely will 'trust' the library answer on the first one, but will probably become en-snarled in endless debate with my Village on the second. The point is I think, that more and more, people are asking questions that the traditional library of knowledge cannot effectively answer, even with functional semantics in place. Long live The Village. Now, who is Number 6?

    It's a concern I share. That's why i move the stuff to Wave. we need a list of eceryone in the groups Wave IDs

    For my 2 sense...don't use Wave--set a private group here or somewhere else, that doesn't have the public/private issues of wave. the problem with wave is there is no central management--anyone can add anyone else to the wave, and pretty soon, ALL your content is visible. I suggest something a little bit more locked down, unless you want to be truly open-source, in which case, take Bent's lead, and move your discussions to codeshare.

    Agree with Frank. There is no use in letting Barney tell us where he lives, if we want to use the map gadget to choose a good place for a meatspace meeting. So this particular wave, given its intent, should have been restricted to the group. In many cases, I think it could be harmless to open a wave to the public: the crowd can contribute good things, we all know that... But I still think that, by default, wave access should be restricted to group members. It would maximize the sharing of relatively private or "sensitive" information within the group. It would also help keeping the discussions on topic (side-tracking is very easy in all forum discussions and the more people you have in the conversation the more side-tracking you get). Now of course anyone in the group can invite anyone, even "Public" into the wave: just like anyone who has access to a private document can copy it and paste it on a blog or any public place.

    Yes F1 (Francois, I will be F2)!! i think we can use the wave structures to keep things private and the fact that any of us can add anyone can be moderated by convention and the trust we have begun to build with each other. plus the reinforcement from the system, in that we all can see who has added whom.     simple--when it's free already, no one wants to pay. I still think the key to monetization is to give the use control of his/her information, let them set a price for their attention, and then charge advertisers a fee to access those individuals with targeted advertising. Those users who exhibit a higher rate of response to targeted advertising get ranked higher in the value chain, telling potential advertisers that these individuals respond better/more often, and everyone wins. The service that provides this exchange medium can take a 'house' cut of the fees, and also provide a pay premium service for a higher tier.

    This is the same way ad.ly works with Twitter, so they say - http://twitter.com/adlyads - however, there are other ways to do this. Think of ancestry.com - they charge an annual fee of $150 or so. I think they have a terrible UI but they're very successful. I've been a member of ancestry.com for a while and am now just getting interested again, because you can have your DNA collected (god, don't tell Kurt! lol) and get your ancestors back to Africa (or Iraq!). iPhone app developers get 70%/Apple 30%.

I like fish's direction on monetization, as one of several parallel channels, and I would rif on the give user control of their own information to say that one's content is on one's OWN SERVER and resolved to the service, that is TRUE CONTROL. then every access request can be monetized in whatever way you wish (value for value, social currency, real money...) every piece of content comes with a privacy wrapper and a pay wrapper

    Checking into ad.ly, their pay rate and advertisers aren't based on your attention, they are based strictly on the number of followers you have. Their whole model is wrapped around slight-of-hand diversion. They figure that by dropping an ad tweet into your own personal twitterstream on an every other day basis, will appear innocent enough on the surface, that some (>1%?) will mistake it for something you personally tweeted and since they follow you blindly like hooded lemurs in Jonestown, they;ll drink your koolaid and make a buying decision. Seems a bit underhanded to me. And they aren't paying me because I might be a good target, they are paying me because I have a high enough unwashed masses quotient to justify the exposure. I set my rate for $5000 figuring that even though I have fewer than 100 followers, they are quality followers and not bots (except for Kurt) and that my endorsement to them is worth a great deal. So far, the till's empty.

  • It's not really a problem for me, with my single-digit Twitter following, but anecdotal evidence shows that once a social networking community gets too big, the back-and-forth that created it evaporates. What I'm saying is, Ashton Kutcher is very lonely. A Wired editorial defends the idea of online obscurity, that those smaller groups and their casual sense of community have something that should be admired and retained. Once a group gets too big, members fade into the background, not wanting to speak in front of such a large audience, and in the case of Twitter, the person being followed becomes larger than life. It's an interesting idea—should we be more vigilant in protecting the small groups of which we're a part? [Wired]

    I think it's an issue more of human attention span and capability. It's much easier to keep tabs on and interact with a smaller group because we lack the ability to divide our attentions out beyond a certain point. There are already enough distractions in the world between family, work, neighborhood, town, city, state, country, etc. Adding another layer of interaction complicates everything else that is going around. In a small group, voices can be picked out from the crowd and heard--attended to. In a large group, a single voice gets drowned by the activity of everyone else, and the 'group' loses identity as a group, and becomes a mob. Besides, I like the bulletin board analogy--it really brought this idea. Time to stop looking at all the pinheads and pair down the clutter, right?

    A number of interesting and stimulating thoughts in this post, which I find considerably less vague than Nova's previous post (last Saturday, that's a long long time ago:) on "eliminating the need for search". The next Google won't be about search but about monitoring, that's the first idea. The second interesting idea is about the Global Brain, whose emergence gets linked here with the speed of change and the richness of information available in the real-time web.     I really should 'share' this to alerts management feature post in this group if I could do so easily I would. I run gmail in my browser to do 'alerts managment' something it does very poorly in concert with the variety of implementations of alerts from each socnet, this is something that can and should be improved

    I know several examples of my friends (non-techie) that are already doing this. They seem to like it much better - all their friends in one place. The favorite if Facebook. I can't figure out who's reading what that I write, so I'm less interested right now, but if preferences/settings were much more obvious, this seems like it will happen. Right now notification seems to be working for me in Diigo.

    this seems like so much bs to me - facebook will be used for one to many, email client will be the notification/alert single screen of attention for everyone over 30. kiddies will likely embrace the new tech, and text will be their notification or they will use a phone client of some sort to aggregate. hopefully we can come up with a device independent alert/notification management interface that can 'replace' the email client (I'm getting pretty tired of managing social networks from an email client), but I bet it will be one of the email client providers who will figure that out and own it. it may mean handling more protocols in email client. the cardinal example in my mind is iCal handling in email clients - it automatically presents a different UI for that message - why shouldn't an email client be able to do everything facebook does? I think the paragraph from Gartner is so much bs as we have no real fixing of terms - will the email client as we know it today disappear, YES will the experience of messaging be more like facebook, GOD I HOPE NOT, but perhaps, but is this research worth paying for? frigging sound bites
