Event Planning - Technology Solutions - Using Cloud Storage for Meetings and Events - S... - 0 views

  • All your data lives in multiple places, so it can never be lost or deleted. For a fee, an individual or organization can claim a certain amount of storage space from these server farms which they would access through an internet connection. Part of the initial thought behind cloud networking was to help small business owners manage their networks more easily. Instead of buying all the equipment to run an entire network, along with the IT staff to manage it, the small business could buy network space from a cloud service and have a fully functioning network without the startup and upkeep expenditures, including a staff to manage and troubleshoot it.
  • Cloud networking options have sprung up all over the place, but two have moved to the head of the class: Box.net and Dropbox. Both platforms operate on the same storage principle, but provide different features for users.
  •
Meetings and events are now stepping to cloud storage. Although cloud-based storage is very popular, there are people who believe cloud storage is not secure, thus important information such as information from meetings and events should not be stored on the cloud. However, cloud storage is safe. And it is even much safer when a company need to back up a large amount of information. A company that stores all information in their property may lose all of it if something unexpected happens. An event or a meeting always involve multi-users, therefore technology must fulfill the need of sharing information among these uses. For example, you will share information between all your devices, colleagues, facilities, and supplier partners A manager should always consider the followings when buying a cloud service for your meeting. The amount of free space provided; the ability to manage concurrency issues with multiple users. and the ability to share folders and documents seamlessly with others on another platform.

  •
IT investment becomes a big part of the investment in the hospitality industry. A research had been done in 2011 to find what factors drive IT investment in the hospitality industry. There are three main factors, which are elevating the guest experience, empowering the mobile worker, and enabling operational efficiency. Management finds that improved guest experience is the top driver for mobility investment, and over half percentage of the respondents witnessed an increase in employee productivity. IT investment also enables operational efficiency and it is said that 3/4 of the hospitality organization have WLAN installed in their facilities. In my opinion, I believe it is the trend to invest in IT, because people cannot live without modern technology nowadays, and even if you do not want to change, your competitors will do so, which will ultimately makes you out of the market. So IT investment is very important, and businesses in the hospitality industry need to take more concern on IT investment.

How To Choose A Property Management System - 0 views

  •
There is a misconception that all PMS are the same. Although basically, they have similar functions, they are not the same. PMS used for restaurant cannot be used in a hotel, and PMS used in a bed and breakfast and that in a luxury hotel are different. It is important to choose the most appropriate PMS for a property. Managers need to consider some things before purchasing a PMS. First, what are the specific needs of your particular businesses? Second, the PMS that a hotel buy cannot have too many weakness compared with its strengths, because too many weakness will make the purchasing a poor choice overall. Third, the cost of purchasing a PMS cannot conflict with financial budget. Even if a manager did all three above, it is inevitable that the PMS you bought are not perfect, however, this imperfection is acceptable.

Top 2012 Ecommerce Trend: Retailers Need to Move to Mobile - 0 views

  • Mayan prophecies aside, 2012 is all about mobile customers. If you're not mobile, you're simply not competitive. And your ecommerce business will suffer as you lose sales to competitors who provide a good shopping experience on mobile devices.
  • The biggest game-changing trend we've seen in technology is the growing usage of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, and how consumers use them for ecommerce.
  • "We have seen an explosion in traffic coming from smartphones. We've seen an even bigger explosion in the rate of orders coming from tablets," said Buzzeo.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • "We see this as a cultural shift
  • Mobile retail sites have two considerations: smartphones and tablets. The biggest difference between using ecommerce sites on a mobile phone and on a computer is the reduced screen size and the limited capabilities of mobile device browsers.
  •
The new trend of ecommerce in 2012 is to move to mobile. Based on the research, customers who are doing online mobile businesses have increased fast during recent years, and it is anticipated that the number of customers doing mobile ecommerce will continue to increase in the future, therefore, many online retailors turn to move their businesses to mobiles. There are some reasons why online retailers need to move to mobile. First, there is a growing usage of mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets. 30 percent of tablet owners have used their devices to shop online, and 25 of smart phone owners have used their phones to do the same. Second: Mobile is convenience. Mobile-users can do online shopping at anywhere without a heavy laptop or a computer. However, there are some challenges. Smartphone has a reduced screen size and the limited capability of mobile device browsers. Online retailers need to supply their websites in a smartphone-friendly version. And for the tablets, a technology called Flash is not supported by all tablets. These changes can arise some costs for the retailer. In a word, it is a time to go mobile, online retailors need to realize this"cultural shift" and take action or they will get left behind. In my own opinion, I still prefer to use computer to do online shopping, because it is more secure and reliable. However, if the mobile ecommerce become mature, I will not reject to try to use it to do online shopping.

  • The main function of any telecommunications network is to provide efficient transmission of information from a point of origin to a point of termination.
  • Along with the PSTA, or public switched telephone network, that most people are familiar with, there is also the Internet, a medium that is increasingly used for both voice and visual communications. Private computer networks are a common tool in many businesses today, as well as many institutions of higher learning. These basic types are all classified into several categories, which include such options as wide area networks, local area networks, and virtual private networks.

  • As communications in general continue to advance, the definition and scope of a telecommunications network will also continue to change and broaden. However, the core concept will likely remain the same.
  • With a local area network, or LAN, the focus is on providing the same secure communications as with a WAN, just on a smaller geographical area.

A telecommunication network used to refer to the collection of switches of wirings used by telephone service; it is now include internet, microwave and wireless equipment as well as telephony. The main function of a telecommunication network is to provide efficient and effect transmission of information. A telecommunication network can set up as WAN and LAN. A telecommunication set up as WAN allows reliable communication between nodes that are geographically located across large distance. Hotels chains that located in different area would like to use this network model. With the same level of security, a telecommunication network set up as LAN is used on a smaller geographic area. It provides phone, data, and internet within an enclosed setting. One example is a hotel, where the phones and internet access are all routed through a network located within a hotel. As technologies continue to advance, the definition and the scope of the telecommunication network will also continue to change. But what will remain the same is the core concept. Before I read this paper, my opinion on a telecommunication network is always indicates telephone service, and now I understand it also include internet, microwave and wireless equipment. I have to say that technology have been changed very fast so that we must keep in mind to update our knowledge on these new technology as well.

Hotel's Free Wi-Fi Comes With Hidden Extras - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • The hotel’s Internet service was secretly injecting lines of code into every page he visited, code that could allow it to insert ads into any Web page without the knowledge of the site visitor or the page’s creator. (He did not actually see any such ads.)
  • The lines of code include references to “rxg,” which stands for Revenue eXtraction Gateway, a service aimed at generating money from Internet access points. On its Web site, a company called RG Nets, which makes Revenue eXtraction Gateway, explains that its system rewrites every Web page on the fly so that it can include a banner ad.
  • Even though this ad-serving system was apparently not serving ads, it was the principle of the thing that upset the online critics. Mr. Watt said that the technique not only affected people browsing the Web, but also the content creators, because they would not get a cut of the revenue and their own ads could be blocked.
  •
Mr. Watt, a customer who was spending his weekend at the Courtyard Marriott in Midtown Manhattan was browsing the website. He realized that there was a strange drawing appeared on the top of the web page, which did not exist before. At first, he did not pay too much attention to it, but he still determined to check source codes to see if there was anything wrong with the computer or the Internet. After checking the source codes, he found lines of code which include references to"EXG". He thought it was a hacker attack, but his IT background enabled him quickly figured out that lines of code that include EXG had nothing to do with a hacker attack, but was a service named Revenue Extraction Gateway used by RG Nets company to inject advertisement secretly without the knowledge of the users, which aims at generating revenue from the Internet access points. Mr. Matt claimed that although this service will not bring harm to the users, but the principle of the thing that upset the users most. The hotel then apologized to Mr. Watt, and promised not to use this service anymore. What I feel interesting is that I also had such problems before, and after I interviewed some of my classmates and friends, I realized that this is a pervasive problem. However, what surprised me the most is the truth that most of the hotels do not know that their hotels' internets are exposed to secret ads injection because this kind of secret service is not on the contracts that the hotels signed with the internet company. In my opinion, it is an unethical service. Customers who use the internet feels that he/she is being spied on, and for the web content creators, they could not get a cut of the revenue from this.
