Redistricting the Nation - 8 views

  •
Redraw the map on redistricting. Legislators have long used redistricting as an opportunity to select their constituents, rather than empowering voters to elect their representatives. The redistricting following the 2010 Census is an opportunity to change how the process is conducted. Armed with knowledge and the right tools, the public can redraw the map on redistricting.

Jules R. Benjamin, A Student's Online Guide to History Reference Sources, Eleventh Edition - 11 views

  •
Welcome to the Web site for A Student's Online Guide to History Reference Sources. Adapted from the appendixes in A Student's Guide to History, Eleventh Edition, this site guides you to some of the best tools available for the most common research areas.

This site accompanies a book I bought recently and would highly recommend as a useful guide for high school history students. It contains research and writing style guides and heaps of online resources (which I'm going to add to the group anyway). It's written for introductory undergraduate students yet would be useful for senior high school history students and is written and organised clearly and effectively.

Teachers Network: How to Use the Internet in Your Classroom - 10 views

  •
The Virtual Field Trip is a field trip that students and teachers take via the Internet.  A great benefit of this activity is that it utilizes technology tools to help students visualize and understand subject matter through exploration and active learning. It's also a great way to "travel" without leaving your classroom! Look for sites with QuickTime VR, which allows you to view panoramic views of your virtual field trip location.

The final videos can all be found here.  I hesitate to embed any in the post because I know I would be prone to pick the "best" one.  Please click on the link and randomly select one to watch! There are two pages of videos-and hey-leave a comment or a thumbs up!  I have to say, that after watching the kids make these, the final products just don't reflect the amount of work that is needed.  What I mean is that you shouldn't watch them and say "My kids could do that in a couple of days."  It took 360 minutes of class time to produce those 1-2 minute videos!! One thing I wished we had done is to write transitions so that the different videos linked together better.  I inadvertently led them to make videos on topics that come across as standing alone in time instead of being influenced and apart of other events and movements. I was able to pop in briefly and watch them being created (on Ustream)- such an amazing process! They are so deceptively simple and enchanting, yet require a myriad of skills. Well done! • A school leader who wishes to “create and sustain a culture that supports digital age learning must become comfortable collaborating as co-learners with colleagues and students around the world” (aka “I don’t do technology” is no longer acceptable.)  Also, this framework seeks to help school leaders propel their organizations forward as members of “dynamic learning communities.” Vision is vital.
  • ensure instructional innovation; model and promote effective use of technology for learning; provide learner-centered environments to meet the individual needs of students; ensure effective practice in the study of technology and infusion across curriculum; promote and participate in learning communities that allow for global, digital-age collaboration
