One of the few early sources we have for pre-contact indigenous history. I find as an Australian history teacher that the indigenous history of Australia is fascinating and useful to study, however the paucity of quality sources (primary and secondary) makes it difficult to teach. Hopefully that will improve with better scholarship on the topic in the future.

I was looking for sources earlier this year for Native American history while I was teaching a unit on Australian indigenous history (I wanted to show the similarities and develop a fresh perspective in my students) and with both topics I struggled to find quality teaching materials, printed or digital. At least this can provide some background information and neat visuals for the students if you're doing a unit on indigenous peoples in the New World.

The history of relationships between Native Americans, Europeans and other immigrants - includes sections on Assimilation, Relocation and Genocide, Indian Boarding Schools, Oral History of the Cherokee and an Interactive Map.

I'm still looking for quality source sites relating to indigenous history and although this site is still under construction it looks like it will be a valuable contribution. Blessed be Paul Halsall and his History Sourcebooks project, the bane of textbook tyranny everywhere!

Excellent collection of history sites well-organised under a diverse range of topics. Yet another brilliant open-source history resource provided by the good people at George Mason University. They rock!

Beautiful images and well-organised. A valuable resource for the topic given the paucity of resources for indigenous history around the world.

When historians look through more evidence they come to understandings that students never get to see becuase their teachers may only rely on the evidence that is part of the liturgy of the US History narrative canon. In this instance, routine court records will tell us much more about puritan Massachusetts than a John Winthrop sermon.
