"With the help of enhanced imagery and an expert in Elizabethan script, archaeologists are beginning to unravel the meaning of mysterious text and images etched into a rare 400-year-old slate tablet discovered this past summer at Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in America. Digitally enhanced images of the slate are helping to isolate inscriptions and illuminate fine details on the slate-the first with extensive inscriptions discovered at any early American colonial site, said William Kelso, director of research and interpretation at the 17th-century Historic Jamestowne site (Jamestown map). "Just like finding the Rosetta Stone led to a better understanding of the Egyptians, this tablet is beginning to add significantly to our understanding of the earliest years at Jamestown," Kelso said. The websites listed on EHPS are not only meta-sources but also include invented archives and born digital sources. Each website that is listed in EHPS has a short description and is categorised according to country, language, period, subject and type of source. The portal can be searched in a variety of ways. The listed websites can be accessed for free, though sometimes a registration is required. EHPS is a work in progress and new content is regularly added. "SAN DIEGO -- At a discussion of "Is Google Good for History?" here Thursday, there weren't really any firm "No" answers. Even the harshest critic here of Google's historic book digitization project confessed to using it for his research and making valuable finds with the tool. But that doesn't mean Google Books wasn't criticized. In a discussion at the annual meeting of the American Historical Association, scholars questioned the way Google has organized the books project and whether it was doing enough in quality control. At the same time, though, many comments suggested deep appreciation for the company's efforts. And some suggested that Google has become something of an unfair target for academics who pay little attention as other companies charge college and university libraries high fees for their materials. Over the course of the discussion, not only did Google take a few hits, but so did librarians and professors (although the Google representative left it to the academics to criticize themselves)."

Some Arab-American students at Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn, Michigan--home to the country's largest community of Arab-Americans--designed and had made sweatshirts that referenced the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks by Islamic fundamentalists. According to the Detroit Free Press, the sweatshirts had these words: "You can't bring us down." Above the words is the number "11" drawn to be the twin towers of the attacked World Trade Center, with little windows drawn in each digit. To the right is a thunderbird, the mascot of the school, flying toward the "11." The students, who are graduating in 2011, told school officials they were just supporting their class. But when other people at the school saw the sweatshirts, many were angered and complained. "The whole design gave prominence to the 9/11 tragedy, and of course was very upsetting to staff and students," said an e-mail message sent from school district officials to local groups and individuals, the Free Press reported. School officials confiscated the sweatshirts, which cost $25 a piece, and held a public meeting at school, where some 300 people showed up to discuss the situation. School officials said the students did not realize anybody would be offended by the design, the newspaper said. The students were not disciplined, and the American Civil Liberties Union in Michigan praised school officials for not taking disciplinary action. Could these kids really not have known the effect of the design on others? I find it hard to believe that kids of high school age didn't know what they were doing. One hopes that their school broadens their education; maybe they could start by having the students read and watch the news coverage from that day."

"January 28, 2010-A thousand-year-old temple complex (including a tomb with human sacrifice victims, shown in a digital illustration) has been found under the windswept dunes of northwestern Peru, archaeologists say. The discovery of the complex, excavated near the city of Chiclayo (map) between 2006 and late 2009, has injected a dose of reality into the legend of Naylamp, the god who supposedly founded the pre-Inca Lambayeque civilization in the eighth century A.D., following the collapse of the Moche civilization. That's because evidence at the Chotuna-Chornancap archaeological site indicates the temple complex may have belonged to people claiming to have descended from Naylamp-suggesting for the first time that these supposed descendants existed in the flesh. The sophisticated Lambayeque culture, also known as the Sicán, were best known as skilled irrigation engineers until being conquered in A.D. 1375 by the Chimú, a civilization also based along Peru's arid northern coast. Archaeologists have been "trying to decode the legend's mystery" for a century, said dig leader Carlos Wester La Torre, director of the Brüning National Archaeological Museum in Lambayeque. "The goal was to understand the possible relations between the oral legend and archaeological evidence." Within the newfound temple complex is a pyramid-shaped tomb, called Huaca Norte, which was filled with the skeletons of 33 women. (Related: "Mummy of Tattooed Woman Discovered in Peru Pyramid.") Two skeletons still have their original hair and some (top row) are mummified. All of them show cut marks, meaning they were likely tortured as part of human-sacrifice rituals.
